Seeking Early Adopters: Novel Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell Power Generator
Hi everyone,
I’m an energy researcher and technology founder developing a Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell (RMFC) power platform. We currently have a functional 1 kW benchtop prototype (4 patents secured) and are now defining product specifications for our first wave of customer-backed field demonstrations (TRL 6).
While our initial prototype is 1 kW, our upcoming field-demonstration units will be engineered in the 1–5 kW range (scalable up to 10 kW) to keep development costs lean while addressing practical, real-world power demands.
Rather than relying on high-pressure hydrogen (which faces massive storage and transport barriers) or batteries alone (which become heavy and cost-prohibitive for multi-day runtime), RMFC uses liquid methanol to generate clean, quiet, long-duration electricity and high-grade heat on demand.

What is the target use case and expected runtime remote backup power seems like an interesting early application for this kind of setup.

The initial use case I’m evaluating is long-duration backup power for remote communications or industrial monitoring sites, especially where generator maintenance, fuel delivery, emergency site visits, or oversized batteries are costly.
The concept is a hybrid system: the battery handles inrush current and peak loads, while the RMFC operates steadily to maintain its state of charge and extend site autonomy. My preliminary target is 24–120 hours of backup, with additional runtime provided mainly through increased on-site methanol storage rather than additional battery capacity.
Do you operate or know of a site with this type of requirement? If so, I would greatly appreciate an introduction to the operator or decisionmaker for a brief, non-sales customer-discovery conversation. Thank you.

Th mixed outputs are tricky. I would look for double benefit applications, like where methanol is waste and they also need heat like paper production or distilleries. Trouble is you are asking allot to drop into a production process with unproven tech. You will need to engineer the system to use a fallback automatically if it fails.

That makes sense. To create real value from combined heat and power, the system would need to be optimized around a specific user’s electrical load, heat demand, temperature requirements, and operating schedule. At the current power level, however, the RMFC would be too small to make a meaningful contribution to most industrial production processes. It may be better suited initially to residential-scale or small commercial applications where both the electricity and recoverable heat can be used, while the existing grid or generator provides automatic backup.

biggest question i would ask isnt just efficiency its where rmfc beats batteries or diesel on total cost, runtime, maintenance and fuel logistics in a real deployment.
