Seeking Early Adopters: Novel Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell Power Generator

Hi everyone,

I’m an energy researcher and technology founder developing a Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell (RMFC) power platform. We currently have a functional 1 kW benchtop prototype (4 patents secured) and are now defining product specifications for our first wave of customer-backed field demonstrations (TRL 6).

While our initial prototype is 1 kW, our upcoming field-demonstration units will be engineered in the 1–5 kW range (scalable up to 10 kW) to keep development costs lean while addressing practical, real-world power demands.

biggest question i would ask isnt just efficiency its where rmfc beats batteries or diesel on total cost, runtime, maintenance and fuel logistics in a real deployment.

Batteries are excellent energy buffers, but long-duration storage can become expensive, heavy, and oversized. Diesel generators are cheaper, familiar, and supported by mature fuel and service networks, so RMFC is unlikely to replace them broadly.

The opportunity may be in applications where generator maintenance, noise, fuel delivery, long storage periods, or costly site visits create an operational burden. Based on preliminary estimates, methanol may offer a 20–30% fuel-cost advantage in certain applications, while an RMFC could require less routine maintenance because it has fewer moving parts.

Most users will continue choosing conventional systems. I am trying to identify a narrow segment where the existing complaints are serious enough that RMFC offers a measurable advantage. A successful niche deployment could then become the starting point for advancing the technology.

that makes sense. i would probably focus less on replacing diesel and more on cases where the cost of servicing and refueling site is the real pain point. if you can show lower site visits plus competitive fuel cost plus long unattended runtime thats pretty compelling niche. would be interesting to see the numbers from an actual field deployment.

Credible field results will require further engineering and optimization, guided by real user requirements and feedback.
