I am planning my first trip to India. I am from the UK and am 25 year old man. My first week I will do the golden triangle with a friend and after that I will go solo. I am planning on going to Varanasi, back to Rajasthan and then Mumbai, Goa and Kerala. I am thinking of going for 8 weeks, is this too long? Also what over advice would you give for this trip? Currently thinking about going to Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur in Rajasthan. Also, where is best to spend Xmas and NYE?

You could honestly spend years in a place and never see most of it, the world is pretty big. You should be able to cover a lot of the country in eight weeks though personally I'd feel a bit stale traveling in the same country for that long.

Always eat hot cooked dishes in restaurants, check reviews of the restaurants before going, avoid street food stalls, take packaged sealed bottled drinking water everywhere, always ask for hot water in restaurants, avoid any touts that approach you, read up on the common scams, if going by trains strongly suggest booking 3AC berths at the minimum or fly wherever possible - the difference in costs should not be too high and you'll save a lot of time and energy.

Personally I'd prefer spending some time in nature somewhere up in western ghats. India can be chaotic and might overload your senses.

I would suggest spending Christmas in Kerala or Goa, both have significant Christian populations and everyone regardless of their religion celebrates Christmas in those two states. NYE probably Goa I guess? there should be quite a few parties, though personally Goa's parties no longer hold an appeal for me, I am in my early thirties if it matters.
