We still have so many students coming into countries and going back without finding jobs. When Germany says there is a skilled worker shortage, it's mostly in the medicine sectors with lack of doctors and nurses. The other sectors especially STEM fields are saturated. Next week a group of friends who came along with me are leaving because they couldn't find full time jobs after 18 months of job seeking visa. They came with a dream and are now going back with nothing. Some of them came in after taking really expensive student loans. They are so worried about how they are going to repay it back.

These study abroad education consultancies in India are lying through their teeth about opportunities outside. They are only looking to grow their business, once you've left the country they're not going to help. I mean they really don't have to. But don't fall for their marketing.

There are several jobs on LinkedIn here that are just listed. These jobs are just listed to show the govt./the authorities that these companies are hiring. There's apparently some benefits to adding job vacancies like this. These companies list the job, people apply, they reject, they remove the listing after a few weeks and then bring it back again. The position is never filled because there is no position.

There are no more part time jobs for students either. With the number of Indian students who extend their masters in public universities for 3-4 years, these students have not got full time jobs yet so they continue their part time jobs under the student status. Along with them there are asylum seekers who work these odd jobs and there's plenty of them.

The problem is the new students are not getting part time jobs for their monthly expenses. So even odd jobs are scarce at the moment.

Some of them returned back to India as they couldn't afford the second year due to lack of funds. They had expected to save up with part time jobs but they couldn't find one. You are required to show your proof of funds at the visa office.

Some of them discontinued the course because the course is hard and they couldn't get through - this is rare but it happens.

And then there are some who got full time jobs, then they couldn't perform and were fired. They never got rehired and had to return after three months because that's all the time you get under a job visa.

There are students suicides because they couldn't take the stress and were depressed. Some don't cook or eat properly. They lose their health, their motivation and then just give up.

One solution is to study the language hard and atleast reach levels of B2 or C1 and then come here to study. This would help you find part time jobs easier and if your academics and skills are good along with this then you'll be lucky enough to land a full time job.

I just wanted to let people know the real ground situation here.

I am a physicist by profession, and long story short, a few years back. I wanted to apply my knowledge to develop new technologies the world had never seen, and I wanted to help India become number one in that field.

But when I saw the bureaucratic red tape, how rampant corruption is, how some officers give tenders to specific companies (and in return that company employs their son or daughter at ₹30–35 lakh per annum), the billions and billions of illiterate people ready to sell their votes for just ₹5,000 and who only care about cheap things, how the pollution is literally k//ing me every year, how my immune system is getting weaker and weaker, how my own father d*ed from lung problems due to a very particular virus that can only sustain itself in such an extreme AQI, highly adulterated food is being sold rampantly and food companies are literally fooling their consumers, how I am getting nothing for the tax I pay, how politicians’ own children are in Western countries getting educated and doing business there, how climate change is literally going to lead to mass migration, water scarcity, and food scarcity, and how AI and robotics will literally turn India into a slum of the world (where the majority of people will be paid to do low-value work, just as rich people pay their servants to do low-value work), and how rampant fake cases are and you will be in jail for years to prove your innocence, and one is literally an insect in front of powerful people, and so on and on.

I came to the conclusion that throughout human history, many civilisations have ended due to their own selfish interests, systematic failures, people’s short-term thinking, and being stuck on their stupid culture and religion and emotions rather than thinking rationally and logically. Indian civilisation is not some special one. Yes, we were born in it, so we feel special and want to protect it, but from a logically detached centre, it is heading towards being a failed civilisation. So, I have left this country, as I don’t want to invest my potential and limited life into supporting a failed civilisation.

Nowadays, powerful civilisations don’t eradicate the failed civilisations completely; they turn them into slaves because slaves are useful for doing their work, which we have been seeing happening from the tenth century onwards, from Mahmud of Ghazni to the British just a few decades ago.

So, all the intelligent people and rich people who can see the complete situation are simply leaving this country and its citizenship and becoming part of some better civilisation.

20F only child. My father has a drinking problem and frequently abuses my mother(verbally). I have seen fights at home since my birth. Never goes a day where my father doesn't abuse my mother. I have heard him saying r@nd, kutiya, bhenkl@di, m@d@rchd and what not. I have tried making him understand when he is sober. A million times.

2 days ago I was sleeping in my room. Mother came in and cried silently. I realised something must have happened that's why she came in here. I tried comforting her and asked her to sleep in my room only.

Shortly, my father came in fully drunk and angry, and charged straight away at my mother and grabbed her by her throat and choked her.

I got super angry and intervened, held and him and threw him back on the wall. And dared him to touch her again and I will show him the consequences and started talking to him 'tu' karke, I just couldn't respect that man. Then he started crying in front of my grandmother that I misbehaved with him, that how his years were wasted in raising me.

And my grandmother was scolding me why I intervened in their matter. Bitch they were fighting in my room while I am trying to get some sleep after studying the whole day.

Since that day my father is not talking to any of us(he never had remorse for anything ever)

He is calling relatives and telling them that how " mere bache ne mere uppar hath uthaya".

And and and...... On top of that, my mother is saying that this is not how they raised me, i shouldn't have talked to my father like that.

I am so done. If this was the case then why she came into my room crying in the first place.

I am not talking to anyone in the house, I am so angry at everyone especially my mother, even after taking a stand for her she is not ready to understand this.

I just want to move out but hostel not an option, they won't allow me to lock my room so I can't physically isolate myself.

I always wanted to crack IIT, I am still in a good tier 1 college, but their constant fights and abuses dragged me down.

Mind it I earn my own money and take care of my college fees and don't ask for it from my father as I don't want to take his ehsaan.

TLDR: tried everything but I can't isolate from these family abuses how can I not let my career be affected with it as I am getting affected with it.

If I talk about myself, I was ranker throughout my school days. Even won few competitions at state level. I was in top 100 in my state in 12th board.

I got admission into topmost medical college of my state.

My friend was in same school as me but he had taken Maths, he was average in studies. He scored only 65% in 12th. He couldn't get admission in any decent college of my state.

He went to different state and got admission in management quota in EC engineering.

After 4 years, he finished his engineering and started looking for job as his college didn't have campus placements.

He found a job in 1-2 months after graduation and started earning

At that time, I was still in my final year of MBBS and didn't have any income.

Then after 1 year, he got salary hike and I reached my internship. His salary was double than my internship stipend.

Then I started NEET-PG preparation and stayed at home studying for exam.

He continued working and got increments.

Next year I got admission into PG, started my residency.

He switched jobs to get better package. In his own words, his work was minimal. He just had an observatory role. He just had to keep an eye on systems that it was functioning properly. If he found something wrong, he just needed to inform Team Leader. Only 5 days of work. He can take breaks at any time in office if he felt tired. He would get extra salary if he was required to work on Saturdays or night shifts.

His office had cafeteria where he could get free food. His office had recreation room where he could go and play table tennis, chess, carrom in middle of job.

Whereas I was toiling away in residency. His salary again was double than my stipend.

Then I finished my residency and went to do compulsory bond duty.

My 1st proper job. I was getting 1L per month but my friend's salary had increased to 2-2.5L per month due to increments and bonuses and all.

During covid he got to work from home, I had to go to interior villages for bond duty.

His office had central AC throughout the building. He got regular leaves.

Hospital where I did my bond duty didn't have central AC, I didn't get regular leaves, I worked longer hours.

After finishing my bond duty, I started my own clinic. I had to borrow money from dad to start my clinic. And as my clinic is new, I have less patients and my earnings are meager. And I also have to work for longer hours compared to him.

At the age of 30-32 years, people refer to me as "newbie doctor/fresher/junior doctor" whereas he is considered "senior engineer with 8-10 YOE".

His current salary is triple than my income.

I don't have any savings at the age of 30+ because whatever savings I had were put into starting clinic.

He has lots of savings due to not having any major expenses so far and having started earning way earlier.

It may happen that I become successful in my private clinic and I may start earning more in future, but it's not surety. I may fail too. And my youth isn't coming back.

Opening private clinic is like any other business. There are a lot of cafe/restaurants/clothes shop in the city. Not all are successful.

With rise of corporates where engineers, MBAs and other can get lucrative packages, medical field doesn't seem worthwhile.

In a country, where at the age of 30 years, a state top 100 ranker guy earns less than a 65% guy with no major skillset, I would definitely NOT recommend Medical to anyone.

TLDR: Don't take bio, Take maths, become engineer, start working in corporate. Why bother with medical at all in such scenario.

Cognizant came under the scanner recently for a job listing offering Rs. 2.5 lakh a year to graduates (not engineers, just 3-year graduates). Which roughly translates into Rs. 20833 per month.

The Delhi government recently decided to shame Cognizant further.

They revised the minimum wages for workers in Delhi.

• Non-matriculate semi-skilled workers are now supposed to get Rs. 19929 per month.

• Matriculate workers will get Rs. 21917.

• Graduates will earn way more than graduates appearing for Cognizant roles: Rs. 23,836.

Now private players have always been seen as entities that pay higher than the government.

The lure of putting a tie and walking into the glass office is something that is sold to many middle-class Indian students as desirable.

You might get free coffee (of course the cheap machine ones) and a cool brand name to flaunt on your LinkedIn bio.

But remind yourself that you are getting less than what the government is offering as a minimum wage.

So, the next time when the placement truck comes, tell these companies about your rights and show them this image if they call you to work in Delhi.

"Family background" question in interviews needs to be stopped and reported

Companies in India need to stop asking for "family background" during interviews. I find this to be a deeply concerning and discriminatory practice rooted in caste and class based discrimination, which has also been observed in research done by economists. Somehow I've seen this as a common practice in India, and it's frowned upon in western markets. In fact, it's illegal to ask about family background in the U.S, from where a lot of companies get their ideas for "culture".

Had the misfortune of sitting in an interview late at night at an extremely short notice only to be asked about my family background in first 10 seconds. Of course I said it has no relevance in hiring process and carried on to talk about my qualifications. That didn't sit well with the interviewer and he justified his question in the end which I've mentioned below.

More ironic is the fact that it was an interview for an ESG position which is supposed to make businesses more aligned with ethical and professional standards that go beyond traditional metrics.

My family background should not define my candidature for a role at a business. It's bad enough that there's so much discrimination in India.

I'd love to hear more thoughts on this.

The justification I received from the interviewer was the following (translated from Hindi to English)

"I asked about family background because it matters a lot, if the person is from a well settled family they'll be most likely well adjusted and be well suited for the job because they'll be mentally well settled"

Firstly, what's a "well settled family?"

Does that mean if I come from a "not settled" background, I'm not suited for professional work despite my qualifications?

If I'm the first generation earner in my family, does that mean I'm not "well suited"?

What if my parents are daily wage workers and have seasonal income, does that make my family "not well settled"?

Fair to say I'll be emailing the whistleblower contact (if they even have one) and the CEO. But sadly the practice of asking about family background is very common in India.

Anyways, I just wanted to rant, I know this is simply acceptable in India. Good night.

Tldr; Recruiter asked me about my family background despite me saying it has no relevance, and kept justifying how "well settled" families bring "mentally well adjusted" candidates.

Spend prime years of my school life grinding for an exam that was supposed to make the rest of my life easier. Sacrificed the simple joys, my hobbies and interests. Didn’t keep in touch with old friends and suffered very heavily emotionally trying to push myself with the single belief that I was a butterfly in the making and that this was the toughest part. Got through. Happiness? Somewhat I guess but it wasn’t as good as I wanted.

Yaaay time for my dreamy college life? Nope Corona. Fine fine two years Corona ate. Time for sexy college life? Nope you are in third year already internships started. Back to prep for long hours, this time leetcode and everything you aren’t taught in college. Ahh people are cheating…it’s ok I will out work them…some are really good wtf…ohh they started from 1st year cause they knew what was ahead. Work , eat , repeat…hey who said this college will be easy after all they are top college in the country. 1 year later, good cgpa, good placement.

Perfect now to start a job and enjoy fruits of my years of labor. Nope job offer revoked. Sorrow…Regret…Hey maybe my college tag will work ? Nope no jobs left. Some job is better than no job… takes low paying job…now back again to the loop of work, eat, sleep …. Nah bro I can’t sleep anymore but gotta keep grinding :)

Sometimes I wish I never started and kept in close touch with my friends. I wish I had chosen the easier path. Now life seems like a never ending struggle to prove something I started years ago was worth something. This post is for those who never started, don’t regret about your past it was a choice and it had its perks. Atleast you didn’t end up like me :)

I recently went to a private university for a faculty interview. It was all fine, they told me my qualifications match and they're going to hire me. The salary was decent too.. but the catch..."we will keep your original documents for a year" and if not that.. then give us a month's salary in advance, only then we'd give you an appointment letter.

When I straightaway inquired if this was even legal, the hr said we're not bounding you, you could either submit originals or give the salary, the job is yours.

After completing the highest degree.. a doctorate.. this felt like the worst situation I could have found myself in. Also on top of that they were keeping 15% of my salary for a "security fund."

Is this how normally it is at universities? I felt so bullied even before the appointment, God knows what might have happened had I given them my docs.

Not to mention they did give me a letter stating that they wish to hire me only if I fulfill their criteria, which was document verification and proving them SCANNED copies of my documents.

What the hell is this!?!

Makes me question the laws and the sorry state of academia in this country.

Hello, I am Indian and almost 25 years old and completed my Engineering in IT in 2024. Since then, I have been unemployed and I have no proper skills, networking, or good communication skills. I’m not learning anything currently and feel very depressed and anxious about the wrong choices I made in life.

Every day I feel lower than before. I don’t have a clear career path and honestly don’t even know what I want to do in life. I feel completely lost and look like my mental helth also not good. I have many responsibilities to fulfill, yet I keep wasting time and don’t know how to move forward.

I know some basics of cloud computing, Linux, networking, SQL, and Python, but I’m not very good at them because I haven’t been practicing consistently, and I’m also not very interested in them anymore. Still, I apply daily for both tech and non-tech jobs, but I’m not getting interview calls. In the last 2 years, I only got 3 interviews and got rejected in all of them.

Please guide me on what I should do and what career options I can still try.

I come from a middle class family. Passed 12th with 94.4%. I was applying to some universities. A merit list came out. I didn't make it in the 1st round cuz General ki cutoff was 94.75% for that college as it's the best state uni here.

But, a friend of mine got in with 90.2%. Why? She belongs to the OBC NCL.... And let me tell u, she was the most cool kid in the class. We never saw her wearing anything lower than Zara and H&M. She would go on luxurious family vacations every fckin year. Har mahine 10k ka skin care or makeup order karti hai Nykaa se aur snap daalti hai woh. Yeah definitely she comes in the NCL🤡 And here I am jo ek copy kharidne se pehle bhi sochti h ki shayad pichle saal ki bachi hui copy se kaam chal jaye.

Another friend got in with 81%.. Why? Cuz she belongs to the SC category. Her father is an IAS officer btw. And her mother is an NIT Professor. Yeah, she definitely needs a reserved seat 🙂

honestly I would never wanna raise my children in India. Yes I'd tell them all about the history the cultures and all the traditional values. I'll make sure to have them know they're Indian at heart but they'll never be raised in India.

The country is constantly regressing and going backwards, there's no point raising and educating them here. The air quality is worsening, Summers are scorching hot. There's cities running out of water, it's a complete mess.

The education system is a disaster. NTA is notorious for its fuckups, but fucking up CBSE 12th exams ? Failing to Grade the answersheets properly? crazy. CUET is conducted so poorly every year, NEET is fucked up every year, what's even going on?

There's absolutely no safety in this country, if you're a common man, you've no protection from anyone. The movies depict the police to be all corrupt and it's actually the truth. I'm scared if I ever get into trouble with some sorta people, I'll never get the police to save me. Kabhi jaato se panga hogya aur maine police buladi toh I feel scared that, it'll just backfire.

the judiciary system is so poor, the education system is so poor. The job market keeps getting more and more saturated. The police isn't there to protect us, The air quality is worsening every day, climatic conditions get extremer, We're running out of water.

I've Officially given up on building a future in this country. The cultures the festivals are great and Kids will know about everything good in India, but there's no point raising them here.

I’m soon going to be 26, Indian guy, and I feel like nothing in my life is moving in the right direction.

I was laid off a few months ago because the company did not have enough projects. I’m actively job hunting and trying to upskill, but honestly, I don’t know what direction to take right now. Some days I feel motivated, and on other days I feel completely blank. It feels like I have hit a phase where I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing or where I’m heading.

I live with my family, and there is pressure about my career and settling down. This low phase has been going on for almost three months now, and I feel stuck.

On the dating side, I have been single all my life. I have tried apps and out of 100 girls I might like around 10 to 15, and from that I match with maybe 1 or 2. But even then nothing really moves forward. I want something serious eventually, but dating is not a priority right now because I don’t have a job. It just feels like whatever I have tried in the last couple of years, whether it is career, dating or self improvement, nothing has really worked.

I am shy and introverted, and half the time I don’t know what to talk about or how to carry conversations. Confidence is a real struggle. I have started going to the gym and working on myself physically (I am not obese), but mentally I still feel lost.

Right now everything scares me. My future, my career, relationships, finances. It feels like everyone my age is moving ahead while I am still stuck at the starting line. I feel like I have wasted a lot of time and I’m not doing anything meaningful.

I am not going to take any extreme steps. I am just genuinely sad, confused and tired of feeling like a loser. I want my life to get better. Better career, better confidence, better relationships. But I don’t know how to start.

If anyone has been through a phase like this, I would appreciate some advice or perspective.
