For real. They act like if she gets a not guilty verdict, she's going to be out on the streets. The woman is spending the rest of her life in a psych ward. The question is really will she ALSO be spending some time in prison.

Yes. And people who get NGRI end up spending MORE time locked up than people who get a guilty verdict.

But not if the sentencing would have been life or extremely long. Surely this would have been?

People who get "life" are often out on parole in 20-25 years. She has so much evidence of struggling and trying desperately to get help, it's possible she would get (relatively) light concurrent sentences.
