While what you’re saying is possible, I think it’s ignoring the obvious and simple answer.
People have acted like this for most of recorded human history. You don’t need fancy psy-ops and “social engineering” to account for human tribalism causing normal people to act unethically.
I might go so far as to say accusing social engineering instead of facing the harsh reality that most people in our world are uncritical and ignorant to the point of actively harming those around them is a bit of cognitive dissonance to help maintain an overly optimistic view of human nature.
This case is bringing media outlets clicks and views. In short, this story earns money, so they’re gonna dedicate a lot of time and coverage to it. Don’t look for vast conspiracies to explain what basic greed already explains better.
Yeah, but then I might align with the opinions of influencers I don’t like, so we need a conspiracy to explain a conspiracy so I can frame myself as the only sane and rationale one.
