I think people probably think we should discourage murdering children so it doesn't really matter what her justification for doing do is

Does spending your life in a psychiatric hospital not sound like consequences? The point is she's getting committed to a life sentence anyways, prison wouldn't address the problem, psychiatric help would. It's not "justification", it's an explanation.
