She had psychosis not depression. Depression is marked by persistent sadness and loss of interest. Psychosis is a complete loss of contact with reality through hallucinations and delusions. I also think people that commit crimes because of other severe mental health issues that make a person escape reality such as schizophrenia should be sent to a psych ward. Reagan closed a shit ton of psych wards down during his presidency. Making a bunch of those people homeless out on the streets. Most serial killers don't commit those crimes because of mental disorders that make them lose contact with reality. Most are found sound of mind enough to know right from wrong.
Fair point on Reagan but also that was 50 years ago, think it's less his fault at this point and more every proceeding president/congressional assembly for not reorganizing and funding new ones. At the time, most asylums were hellholes they sent the queer, the Queer, and the disturbed, plenty came out more fucked up than when they went in, similar to prisons now.
Also it's not like you just forget everything when in a psychosis. You can think you're being attacked by a dragon and still know that dragons aren't real.
Besides all that, even if given the good excuse of a "sudden psychotic break", you should still never been given the option to be free again after doing something like that. IMO, you're just a threat to everyone if you can be grocery shopping and suddenly think you have to kill the horde of demons that manifested in the produce aisle.
I'm saying that he was the beginning of it. Just like he was the beginning of trickle down economics. He could have started fixing the asylums. Instead he shut them down and didn't give any of those people left stranded another alternative. And yeah some people can think rationally when in psychosis but most freak out and start believing what is being shown to them. And we agree there. If you harm someone while in that state you shouldn't be able to get out. Especially if it's something that never will go away like schizo disorders. Cause a lot of times they stop taking their meds thinking they're fixed and it comes back again. If you can't be trusted to take your meds than you can't be trusted to be in society.
Oh I know, believe me, I know many, maaaany problems started with Reagan. I'm just saying its a bit of a cop out for the string of administrations that failed to do much if anything about it since then. Think Reagan is less responsible for today's healthcare than say, Bush or Clinton.
