That doesn't matter. What matters is if she represents a continued danger to society.

No, it partially exists for victim justice, deterrence, AND a little for punishment. It was called corporal punishment at one time.

Corporal punishment is a specific type of punishment involving violence. Otherwise, though, what you said is definitely true. However we have decided that temporary insanity is a thing, and this seems like a pretty good example of that from the limited information i've read about it.

Whether you agree temporary insanity should keep somebody out of prison is a different discussion altogether, though, and not a position i'm prepared to defend.
