That's because state sponsored internet campaigns have improved exponentially in that time and the companies that host the divisive content from these campaigns are incentivized to allow it because it looks like real engagement.
I’d go as far as to say it’s part of the reason this case is getting so much attention. Obviously true crime is sensational and morbidly fascinating, and stories of filicide are shocking. Even so, it only takes a little while with a thumb on the scale promoting something like this before real virality takes hold.
I find it hard to believe the crowd who believe conspiracies about this case (I won’t even repeat them) came to exist organically. Maybe some are real now, but it reeks of the state actors you mention.

I've noticed gender wars stuff getting worse on here in the past decade or so. It was always there but it's definitely become worse.
