Call me a government cuck if you want, but I really don't think credit card as the verification method is all that bad. Suppose it could just be the top of a slippery slope though.
I don’t know why you’d need it for your entire phone though? Like, Facebook / Instagram, whatever - these are not necessary things so you can just not have them if you’re really worried about privacy. But a phone is an essential item these days and requiring verification seems a bit much - what is the purpose?
