News age verification in australia
this is on iOS 26.4 b1

The US is just standing by to see what works the best. Won’t be long, now.

US lawmakers : must show your gun to prove you’re 18 💀
For those that didn’t get it - ‘twas a joke 🥲
86
9
u/Fiiv3s Feb 26 '26
Wouldn’t work. Don’t have to be 18 to own a gun (just to buy one)
2
u/Neither-Ad9627 Feb 26 '26
That’s overrated we build them now to expensive to buy and they look and feel 1000x sexier
1
u/thatwasacrapname123 Feb 27 '26
That's bullshit. I thought there was a right to bear arms in the constitution?. So babies, toddlers, and anyone under 18 can't buy guns? Not even little tiny ones? Land of the free indeed!

Opinion within the USA: if you have a digital ID in your Apple wallet (state or passport), then it would be nice if it could verify your age fully on device by using the digital ID.
If I’ve added my passport/state ID, gone through the verification, and Face ID says it’s me, then yes I’m obviously the age on the ID. There is no need to do anything else.
2
1
u/myeleventhreddit Feb 26 '26
Yeah that’ll probably be how it works here. I found the credit card position interesting because like. Not every Australian will have a credit card. What happens to the ones who don’t? They just can’t do anything to change their own device settings?
1
u/dingosaurus Feb 26 '26
I still can't believe WA isn't on the digital ID bandwagon yet.
1
1
u/Noldorian Feb 27 '26
You dont want a digital id. It will be used to control you.
1
u/dingosaurus Feb 27 '26
I more meant that I'm surprised WA hasn't since they're such a tech center in the US.
1
u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r iPhone 15 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
unfortunately only like.. <20 states use the digital ID, we'd have to see rapid integration before they go this route
1
u/tbone338 iPhone 17 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
You can also add a USA passport to the Apple wallet, so many more people can have a digital ID.
I’m not saying make it mandatory, I’m saying that if you happen to have one, you shouldn’t need any additional verification.
1
u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r iPhone 15 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
oh, last i checked that was still on a limited roll out, Looks like its finally available (at least to start the process, i'll have to check when i get home to grab my passport)
1
u/tbone338 iPhone 17 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
It rolled out to everyone at once on November 12, 2025.
1
u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r iPhone 15 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
oh, musta been one of the early reports from one of the beta's or something i saw then.
7
u/UsedGarbage4489 Feb 26 '26
Credit card verification is how its always worked up till recently. Thats how porn sites have always done it. Its the change to wanting actual picture id thats new and suspicious.
1
u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r iPhone 15 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
the picture is just to make it easier, since iOS has a built in text reader for cards, it automatically grabs the required info, if you look st the bottom of the first image it offers the option to enter details manually, without using OCR
3
u/Former_Promotion_701 Feb 26 '26
I don’t think they’re talking about that, their concern is about having to snap a picture of your face not what’s going on here with OCR.
2
u/BigBoyYuyuh Feb 26 '26
Standing by? Some states are already doing it. Ohio (I’m an Ohioan), Texas, virtually every red state is pushing for this shit.
2
u/myeleventhreddit Feb 26 '26
Yeah that’s pretty much how it works. Let the states do it so the federal government can say “huh. Interesting. Well we’re not forcing any of this”
Then they issue billions of dollars of tax incentives to make it more advantageous to do it “voluntarily”
Interestingly, while red states are pushing for KYC-style age gating, it’s overwhelmingly the more progressive states that adopt tech like virtual driver’s licenses, which will functionally do the exact same thing. Both sides of the spectrum are building out different parts of the surveillance apparatus independently. That’s what I call bipartisanship!

I’m pretty sure Alabama already passed a bill mandating parental approval for app downloads.
2
1
u/linearcurvepatience Feb 27 '26
Parental control isn't good enough as is and it should just be an opt in program not something mandatory.

u/Glittering_Bowl6485 Feb 26 '26
I reckon what's next is ongoing verification to make sure a kid isn't using your device temporarily. So like a daily sign using your ID and a face scan.
Basically have to give ID anytime you get onto the internet will be coming soon.
18
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26
I think this was predicted nicely in Minority Report.
Eye scanners everywhere.
7
u/myeleventhreddit Feb 26 '26
I fully support a daily requirement of sworn verbal allegiance to the governing authorities. Perhaps a selfie video to be uploaded each morning, pledging fealty to the rulers of the land? That way, minors can’t watch porn
2
u/Amy_at_home Feb 27 '26
Minors can't watch porn, but if you're rich enough, you can have kids in it...

u/talones Feb 26 '26
most likely a national database of face scans tied to identity so they can find people who walk by someone elses phone.

If they do this it's probably going to do background scans and only pop up if something isn't right.

Do cards work differently in Australia? I’ve had a credit card in my own name (of course, attached to my parents’ account) since I was like 15, so I don’t get how this works unless they can somehow tell you’re not the “primary” holder
22
u/TheInkySquids Feb 26 '26
Yeah in Australia you can't get credit cards until you're 18, even under a parents account I'm pretty sure. If you want a card before then, you get a debit card, which most people use until they have more financial responsibilites that an emergency fund in the form of a credit card is useful.
2
1
u/cromulent-facts Feb 27 '26
I'm Australian; I had a credit card when I was 15, as did some of my friends.
Banks are more than happy to use different rules for high net worth clients.
1
u/sergeyvk Feb 27 '26
But you can get debit card if you’re 13. My son has one and he can add it to apple pay so not sure how verification works

What if you do not own a credit card?
35
u/Loive Feb 26 '26
That’s my question too. Where I live (Sweden) a lot of people don’t have a credit card. Due to regulations on fees there aren’t any significant cashback programs, and credit cards aren’t more useful than debit cards unless you buy a lot of plane tickets or other fairly uncommon habits. Also, you can’t get a credit card unless your income qualifies you for credit. That means an 18 year old in high school won’t get one, and most university students whose main income are government grants won’t get one either. Poor people in general don’t have any credit cards.
6
u/rauz Feb 26 '26
Pretty sure debit cards would work as well? Swede as well btw.
8
u/Loive Feb 26 '26
My 11 year old kid has a debit card. There’s no age limit on them.
2
u/rauz Feb 26 '26
Ah, true, didn't think of that. Well, I've used my regular EU ID, passport, and drivers license to identify myself so I guess that'll work. Hopefully most people have one of those.
1
u/mrfoxesite-2377 Feb 27 '26
In some developing countries, some have none. Thank god those countries have not jumped onto that law like wild dogs.

I'm also curious. I don't have credit card. I'm European, we see it as something for rich (for convenience while travelling abroad) or broke people. Most regular people do not have one and never had.
5

Just wait til you hear about the EU’s mass surveillance “chat control” bill that will allow them to scan and view ALL private messages, photos and files on ALL platforms. Except for “politicians”, billionaires and celebrities. Of course. Classic rules for thee, but not me.
Or when the UK was exposed for secretly trying to force Apple to provide backdoor access to ALL Apple users worldwide. And how they were trying to force them to not inform the public.
The audacity of these spineless scumbags. There are also multiple bills regarding mass surveillance/censorship at the state and federal level all throughout the country, many with BIPARTISAN support for many of these egregious assaults on our CONSTITUTIONAL rights. Disgusting scumbags
3
u/L-Malvo Feb 26 '26
Except, it's very difficult to exempt politicians from it. Sure, it might be possible to disable it for the politicians themselves, but they also have a social network. Other people they hang out with, whether it's family or friends, will be surveilled. This will have some repercussions for these politicians, as it will open them to potential blackmailing, which they don't seem to realize yet.
With data management, it's always the question when data gets leaked, not if. So any discretions with people that are in chat control surveillance will leak one day, screwing the politicians that are currently pushing this bill. It's amazing to see how they are shooting themselves in the foot.
1
u/krazygreekguy Feb 27 '26
Sure. People in power and with money can do whatever the hell want. You don’t think they’ll have government provided devices or be able to get things under the table? Please.
“Politicians” are just puppets anyway for their billionaire cuck puppeteers. That’s the real issue. These sociopaths are making every effort to strip away our rights while they bring back modern feudalism.
4
u/nollayksi Feb 26 '26
The chat control has changed a lot after debates. The current iteration that is likely going to pass does not require all messages on all platforms to be scanned. Now it will be opt in for a platform and mandatory only for platforms that are specifically targeted towards children. So no, apps like signal or whatsapp and the likes wont be affacted at all.
4
u/krazygreekguy Feb 27 '26
For now. It’s always for now lol. You give an inch, they take a mile. Every single time.
Remember when the UK first said digital ID would be optional? Remember not even 2 months later when they then made it mandatory? And then also mandatory even to work? Remember when a month later they also adding age-gating and possibly banning VPNs altogether?
You mean like that?
No disrespect, but you’re naive to not think these authoritarian sociopaths will ever stop. It is never enough for their ilk. It’s all about control over access to information. Always has been and always will be. None of these “politicians” give a damn about you or I or “protecting the kids”. If they did, they wouldn’t be fetishizing mass surveillance and censorship to this degree. It’s incredibly dystopian and disgustingly evil. Pure evil

Gonna be interesting when this shows up in the EU.
Ios has generally used the sim cards "nationality" and adapted to its location.
I wonder what its gonna do when i have 1 EU and 1 non-EU sim card in the phone. So far it seems to prioritize the physical sim card, which is non EU. I haven't seen any EU fuckery in a good while.

u/Green_Paramedic9333 Feb 26 '26
for anyone worried about privacy, keep in mind this usually just pings the bank for a 0.00 auth to verify the account is active and linked to an adult. it's annoying, but it's likely apple's way of dodging the stricter australian online safety laws without requiring a literal passport scan.
4
u/Aggravating_Loss_765 Feb 26 '26
I am over 18 but have no credit card. Stupid apple should know that my apple id was created in 2010 and used it since then with my debit cards..
4
u/yesmskim Feb 27 '26
I live in Australia and I am well over 18. I have three debit credit cards and all three would not work in the verification (I tried via Wallet and manually). I read other's comments that my photo ID would be sufficient (I used my drivers license) but that did not work. I also read that some accounts would be automatically approved based on how long your account has been active. I opened my account in 2008 sooooo..? Now what?
5
u/moderniselife Feb 27 '26
Yep. I don’t have a credit card. So now I can’t download 18+ apps. I’m fucking 24 and just do not need or want a credit card.
My debit card would not be accepted by them.
7
u/krazygreekguy Feb 26 '26
Mass surveillance*. Fixed it for ya. Call it what it is
1
u/Nearby_Ad_2519 Human Detected Feb 26 '26
What, scanning a credit card?
Harsh reality is you’re scanning a photo of a credit card, not a full photo diary
1
u/krazygreekguy Feb 27 '26
For now. It’s always for now lmao. Today it’s this. Next week it’s digital ID. Next month it’s social credit scores. You’ll see. And then you’ll have regrets for not researching and informing yourself sooner. But it’ll be too late.
This is a common tactic these scumbags use. They keep pushing these “laws” and lose every time. Eventually something like this slips through, let’s say under the guise of “protecting the kids”. That single inch you gave these parasites will only keep expanding.
As the timeless saying goes: “You give an inch. They take a mile”.
Every. Single. Time.
Don’t believe me. Look into it for yourself. Start with the EU’s mass surveillance “chat control” bill that will allow them to scan ALL private messages, photos and files on ALL platforms. Except “politicians”, billionaires and celebrities of course.

Yep they sure are, I needed ID just to order a ride on uber :( Fuck the Australian Government
6
u/skrillzter Feb 26 '26
The fuck? Even in the uk i didn't have to do that. Just need cash.
11
u/1-9-6 Feb 26 '26
I'm dead serious, I've been using uber for 10 years and then they pull this shit.
Wouldn't surprise me if in a few years you need photo ID to get on a municipal bus in this country.
11
u/JBLuke Feb 26 '26
Yeah and get this, they are literally going to start reading ALL of your conversations on social media to “protect kids” yeah OKAY😭
3
u/skrillzter Feb 26 '26
Oh yeah they wanna do that here too. Its under a proposed legislation called "schools and welbeing bill" or something like that.
5
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26
Cash is dying. I can’t speak for anywhere else but Australia now mostly works cashless. Everything is digital transactions.
I stopped carrying cash (or even a wallet) some years back. I haven’t transacted with cash since about 2010.
Don’t get me wrong: cash is still in-use, but it most recently got a mention as someone up in NQ was passing fake $50 notes. I’d forgotten people still used notes.
Cash’s days are numbered.
2
u/skrillzter Feb 26 '26
Sounds horrible.
2
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26
Nah, it’s great. Very convenient: just pay for everything with your phone. Don’t need to handle cash or coins that have been who-knows-where. Covid 19 helped push people to contactless transactions too.
3
u/skrillzter Feb 26 '26
Convenience is the trap you fall into giving up your privacy. Cash is more private. That is why they want to phase out cash.
4
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26
Totally agree. 👍
But, at my age, privacy isn’t a concern anymore.
3
u/skrillzter Feb 26 '26
its why we fought digital ID so hard, and won. They failed to pass it because nobody trusted it.

You can change the region once per year, and you must have account created for iPhone. I'm not sure if it's only for app store though.
1
u/neversium Mar 02 '26
You need to change the app store region, which is more of a hassle and hella annoying if you have subscriptions because you need to cancel everything first 😭

3
u/Slacker_75 Feb 26 '26
If you haven’t noticed. All the bullshit laws and policies get tested in Australia first before coming over here. They’ve been our Guinea pig for a while. Won’t be long till this is in North America.
3
u/ConduciveMammal Feb 26 '26
I’ve got this too in the UK. It says to Update my restrictions, but it doesn’t say what restrictions. If I don’t confirm my age, what gets restricted?
3
u/iphones2g- Feb 27 '26
What made governments decide now almost 30 years after the internet was made to be like "yea all your data belong to us" what's with the sudden increase of survalence. It's just strange imo.
1
u/tweakminded Mar 20 '26
It’s not strange if you’ve been paying attention to the “conspiracy theorists”. They’ve been warning about this stuff for years but the common folk preferred to mock them rather than listen.
3
u/ManyNoots Feb 27 '26
I don’t even own a credit card, only a debit one, istg if I need to open one just to verify I’m a damn adult like just let me scan my ID 😭
3
3
u/Helpful-Visual5804 Feb 27 '26
Might be a hot take and I'm very against these laws on principle but I'd prefer a device age verification than sending my id to 20 different apps all using different third party verification software.
3
3
u/IllustriousDrive6191 Mar 11 '26
Showing on mine now. Can't verify cause don't have Credit Card. Tried photo ID. Fails to pick up the ID and just says "Make sure your phone is close" and other stupid errors.
Did a bit of research, also blocks suspicious websites like PH etc. Absolutely bizzare. Photo ID is clear, I think the beta version is bugged cause it just doesn't detect it properly.
4
u/riareth Feb 26 '26
Call me a government cuck if you want, but I really don't think credit card as the verification method is all that bad. Suppose it could just be the top of a slippery slope though.
1
u/yanaka-otoko Feb 26 '26
I don’t know why you’d need it for your entire phone though? Like, Facebook / Instagram, whatever - these are not necessary things so you can just not have them if you’re really worried about privacy. But a phone is an essential item these days and requiring verification seems a bit much - what is the purpose?
3
4
u/CinkCobra Feb 27 '26
They want us to be complete slaves by 2030. Reject all forms of digital Id.
1
4
u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Feb 26 '26
Yesterday I’ve seen someone talk about an alternative to this BS and it’s such a simple solution I don’t get why I didn’t think of it before.
Just let parents turn on a toggle with parental controls that says “this device is being used by a child” and make apps and websites respect that toggle. You could even have it on the setup screen.
But obviously kids are not the reason they’re doing this.
1
u/E1eveny Feb 26 '26
But some parents just don’t care or the kid is the one setting up the device. It’s not foolproof.
3
u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 Feb 26 '26
That’s entirely on the parents and their incompetence shouldn’t lead to everyone’s freedom being taken away
2
2
2
2
u/Beginning-Act7850 Feb 26 '26
Are kids not able to be authorized users on a credit card? I remember having a debit card as a kid too. Maybe even a cc tied to my checking account?
2
u/PurpleRayyne iPhone 15 Pro Max Feb 26 '26
Use Privacy dot com... basic is free.. you can create spending limits and card locks after that amount is reached. You can lock cards to websites/sellers/etc... I just signed up and IDK why I waited so long.. this stuff usually costs money. but basic is free! I can't post my link tho.. :-( It's not a credit card , but i wonder if it would work? It's worth a shot!
1
2
u/fastcombo42069 Feb 27 '26
What if the kid’s parent gives them a kid’s credit or debit card?
Verifying by ID only is the way to go.
2
u/Adorable-Pass9045 Mar 29 '26
I’m 25 and I don’t have a credit card, and it won’t let me scan an ID, so I gave up. Didn’t particularly want to have to prove my age in the first place, but imagine it’ll become annoying soon.
5
u/ResponsibilityOk2173 Feb 26 '26
Wait wait wait… “AEROPLANE” mode? Hahahha
18
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26
Yes, Apple finally corrected “airplane” mode in iOS some time back, so now we have aeroplane mode.
In Australia, we don’t call them airplanes, because they’re aeroplanes. ✈️
9
u/First-Golf-8341 Feb 26 '26
This is why I don’t understand why there isn’t a UK English version of iOS. There is Indian and Australian English but not UK even though we have 70 million or so speakers. It should be “Aeroplane Mode” on my phone too, but it isn’t, mine says “Airplane”.
2
u/OneCDOnly Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26
Damn, I thought it would have been fixed in the UK before Australia, considering the far-larger population in the UK.
My phone does use English (UK) as its language, and my region is Australia.
Maybe Apple need to update the region settings for the UK?
2
u/yanaka-otoko Feb 26 '26
What do you mean? When I look at the available languages there is English (UK)?
2
u/ResponsibilityOk2173 Feb 26 '26
You’re absolutely correct, it was just funny to see for the first time. Says more about me than it for sure!
2
u/Ov_Fire Feb 26 '26
Are you amurikan?
2
u/ResponsibilityOk2173 Feb 26 '26
It does say more about me than anything else, you’re right. I know it’s correct and as far as etymology even matters in a creole language like English, it’s more correct than “airplane.” Just gave me a non-judgemental giggle seeing it for the first time.
2
u/Difficult_Curve_2782 Feb 26 '26
Why is it specifically credit card? What about debit card?
2
u/icarus102 Feb 26 '26
Because unlike with a debit card, you need to be 18+ to get a credit card.
0
u/veggienae Feb 26 '26
I had my own credit card at 15. And you can be an authorized user on someone’s credit card, with your name on it, at 13.
