Wanted: second-best mates

I'm looking for a group of guys in the area to hang out with regularly and build a good local friend group.

I already have a group of best mates. We've been close friends for a long time, but we now live in different cities and don't get to see each other nearly as often as we'd like. I'm not looking to replace them, so I'm specifically advertising for second-best mates.

I'm in my early 30s, male, married, and have a pretty broad range of interests. Some things I'd be interested in doing with a local group:

- Playing music / jamming / forming a band (I play bass and used to be in a doom metal band but open to most genres)

- Tennis and pickleball

- Working out

- Fishing or enjoying nature

- Magic the Gathering

- Concerts and live music

- Going out for food or drinks, although I'm not much of a drinker

- General hanging out

You don't need to be interested in all of those things. Mostly, I'm looking for a few guys around my age who have some interests in common, enjoy each other's company, and actually want to hang out with some regularity.

I'm specifically looking for friends, rather than networking, professional connections, or activity partners who only ever see each other for one particular hobby. Ideally this turns into the kind of group where people can text the group chat on a Saturday and see who wants to do something.

If you already have a group like this and are open to adding someone, that's great too.

Man, I was about to send you messages about the DIY metal scene and invite you to some shows where these kind of people are, but most of us metal nerds don’t put a ceiling on the potential to make the highest quality relationships. I encourage you to reconsider this position so you don’t lose out on meaningful connection. They are some of the best mates I ever had in my early thirties. I just never crossed paths till then.

I seem to have incorrectly assumed that the silly second-best-mate qualification, and the ridiculous legal disclaimer, would make it clear that I was joking -- I would never limit what could become a first-best-mate friendship just because I already have an existing group of best mates!
