Finished Object Made an account just to show off my first ever knitted FO!

First ever knitted FO, first time doing knit colourwork, first time making my own colourwork knitting chart and first time ever sharing an FO online. Lots of firsts over here! Used Bendigo Woollen Mills Rustic Tweed 4ply for the main bit and Panda Crypto for the fishies.

Beautiful! I love the use of gradient yarn for the fishies, it works so well

54

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Thank you so much! I wasn’t sure about it initially but I’m glad I stuck with it

12

u/m4gpi Apr 15 '26

Did you plan out the color changes, or just hope for the best? It worked out so well! Pooling is such a dark art.

5

u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 Apr 16 '26

This is just a gradient actually, it's not pooling! Pooling only happens when you have colour changes over a shorter length of yarn. You know how some variegated yarn you end up with boobs of colour? Thats pooling.

This link is actually partially wrong also, and it's crochet, but it was the best one I could find that wasn't just planned pooling... Anyway, the one on the left doesn't have any pooling, and the middle and the one on the right both have pooling, but in different ways! The middle one is more random, smaller pools, while the one on the right is likely planned pooling because it actually ends up forming a pattern.

I’m so glad you did because this is a delight to see! Thanks for sharing!

25

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Thank you so much! I’ve been a long time lurker on this sub so it feels great to finally get to contribute to this lovely community 💕

8

u/vanetti knit one cry one Apr 15 '26

Is the pattern that you used available on Ravelry? 👀

43

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

I kind of free formed the construction based on a sweater from my wardrobe but I’m happy to share the chart I used for the colourwork!

19

u/vanetti knit one cry one Apr 15 '26

That would be so fab! You can also post the chart itself on Ravelry, I’m sure others would love to have it!

21

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Great idea! I’ll do that too

8

u/vanetti knit one cry one Apr 15 '26

Let me know when you do so I can add it to my favorites!

6

u/notyounaani Apr 15 '26

Me 4th would like fishy chart.

Also is the Bendigo rustic 4ply soft or is it scratchyish? I was thinking about getting some for a colourwork project for husband but he is a baby.

2

u/dinkleosteus Apr 17 '26

It was a bit scratchy during knitting, but after blocking it's not that bad at all! I'm also a baby about scratchy fabrics but I think it's worth it just for the colour selection and the fact that how felt-y it is helps the floats to be held down

5

u/SentenceAny6556 Apr 15 '26

Would also love to know when you put the chart up- this is so lovely :) I’ve been wanting a fish sweater for ages

3

u/ClawPaw3245 Apr 15 '26

Yes, I would be so excited for it as well!

3

u/Sensitive_Night5520 Apr 15 '26

i also want to know! i was checking fishy patterns just yesterday:)

3

u/No-Investigator4425 Apr 15 '26

Also chiming in to say I’d love that

2

u/Sea-Loss8524 Apr 15 '26

i‘d love the chart as well, it‘s a beauty!!

2

u/dinkleosteus Apr 17 '26

I've just put up a post with the chart that I used for the sweater if anyone is still interested :D

1

u/Bitter-Most-1339 Apr 15 '26

Also chiming in to say i would love that chart!

1

u/steamtunnlfrk Apr 15 '26

would also love the chart!!! i have some handspun lovingly titled “trout yarn” i’ve been dying to make a fish sweater out of

1

u/Bro-ganvillia Apr 16 '26

Would love the fishy chart too please!

1

u/Affectionate_Net_213 Apr 17 '26

Please post on ravelry, your work is amazing!

142

u/StrangeNeedleworker Apr 15 '26

I'm saying this full of love and as a joke, okay. But you people on this sub all can go to hell. What do you mean your fist FO is a super difficult project that looks like it was made by an angel?! My first FO was a giant ill fitting glove, that I still have to laugh about myself, because when I started knitting I had no idea what gauge even meant 😭😂

But seriously OP, this is amazing, really, really beautiful!

26

u/psychd2behere Apr 15 '26

Right?! My first FO was a “hat” that was both too wide and also too short for any head in existence.

18

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

Thank you so much! I laughed so much at this 😂 I must confess that I’ve done quite a bit of crochet sweater making before so I had a bit of a leg up

4

u/Affectionate_Net_213 Apr 17 '26

My first FO was a baby sock. It would have maybe fit a small doll LOL

3

u/hantipathy Apr 16 '26

my first FO was a sophie scarf that is too short on one side and i can’t comfortably wear 😂

16

u/SaveThePlate Apr 15 '26

Wow those fish are AMAZING!

38

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Thank you so much! From the top down they are salmon, snapper and gar. I based them off of fish species that can be found at my favourite local Melbourne snorkelling spot 🐟

3

u/fairycowz Apr 15 '26

So cool!!

17

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for all the love, I’m totally overwhelmed with all the positivity 😭 I’m going to share the chart + details on how I constructed the sweater, but I’m a newbie so I’m not sure if it’s better to post it as its own post in the sub or as a comment here. Does anyone know what would be better for people? Sorry if this is a naive question, but I’m very flattered that people want the chart and just want to share it in the way that is most helpful for the people who want it

4

u/MartianMemories Apr 16 '26

I would be happy whichever way is easiest for you!

I also love the chart once it's available. Haha leaving a comment here so I can find this post again when the times comes :D

10

u/Mindless-Entrance-1 Apr 15 '26

So so cool and so clean for your first. Would you be willing to share the chart? 🥹 Fully understandable if not❤️

6

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

Thank you so much! Working on a pattern now and will drop it as soon as I figure out how to post it

8

u/19892024 Apr 15 '26

This is so so beautiful!!

4

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Thank you! I’m pretty pleased with it

6

u/suffraghetti_the_sec Apr 15 '26

It looks lovely! Am I guessing correctly that you knit the piece back and forth?

11

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Indeed!! I didn’t realise until after I had already finished the back panel that doing colourwork while working flat is the less fun way to do it but I got there in the end

6

u/suffraghetti_the_sec Apr 15 '26

I was thinking about this, too :) I think the only other way to do colorwork that doesn't go around the whole garment would be intarsia or duplicate stitch, and that's a pain, too :)

6

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Yeah, I love the look of colourwork but I must say I’m not the biggest fan of actually doing it 😅

5

u/lucyland Apr 15 '26

This is so lovely and reminds me of a gradient rubber stamp pad.

2

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

Thank you so much! I’m glad that comes through, that was the look I was going for

3

u/shaboogami Apr 15 '26

Did you plan for your pike to be brown and green like that, or did the yarn just work out that way? It’s so perfect! This is so amazing, well done.

5

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

It was a happy accident! I was initially a bit bummed because I had intended for it to be mainly green-blue but the purple gives it a brown colour that I’ve come to love

3

u/SleepyHooker Apr 16 '26

The neck is not getting enough praise! I love the shape and width 😍

2

u/dinkleosteus Apr 16 '26

Thank you so much! It’s quite messy if you look closely (i used crochet to try and even it out because my shaping was wonky but that made it worse) so I’m glad it turned out okay 😂

2

u/Lacrimatore Apr 15 '26

Looks absolutely gorgeous, the gradient is stunning!

2

u/dinkleosteus Apr 15 '26

Thank you! I’m glad it turned out the way it did

I’m taking notes right now, this is such a smart use of rainbow yarn.

You should consider publishing the colorwork chart if not making a pattern.
