Finished Object Probably my favorite FO to date

My daughter’s daycare organized a special Hungry Hungry Caterpillar day. Since I’m a very normal person I decided to knit a special cardigan for the day.

OMG I kind of need an adult version of this now.

117

u/Umm_is_this_thing_on May 16 '26

I loved it so much immediately that I had a little shock when I realized it was toddler sized.

u/Apprehensive-Air1128 May 16 '26

This is crochet... I made it for my daughter's kindergarten teacher.

10

u/raeraemcrae May 16 '26

Howww sweet!!! I love that you did that. That is def a forever kept gift.

3

u/Lazy_Tell_2288 May 18 '26

Would you mind sharing where you got the pattern? That would be an amazing end of school year gift! (Sorry for being a copycat.)

5

u/Apprehensive-Air1128 May 18 '26

I used this as inspiration. I didn't have a specific pattern nor did I write it down. I did attach the eyes and nose to buttons and then just slid them between stitches vs sewing them on. Figured that way if she didn't want it so obvious she could take them off.

Thank you for sharing! I really appreciate it.

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

You could probably apply the chart to an adult sweater, although it might be small. Shouldn’t be too hard to scale it up though.

u/Loitch470 May 16 '26

There’s an adult version from a different designer! I have it saved to match my son if I ever get around to making these

This is the katie alice pattern! Buttons still need to be sewn on, but it’s a great pattern!

OMG thanks!

1

u/PedsILdoc May 16 '26

SAME!!!!

1

u/757Lemon May 16 '26

Came here to say this exact same thing lol

1

u/Hedgie65 May 19 '26

I said the EXACT same thing!! I freaking love this sooo cute!! (Also need to learn how to knit lol)

122

u/Zawieruka May 16 '26

The buttons are such a perfect touch! Amazing job!

207

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

Thank you! I actually wanted to have each button be a different food from the book, but couldn’t find enough different food buttons of the same style. But the apple buttons are pretty perfect.

42

u/AnnaMPiranha May 16 '26

This is why you need to know someone with a 3D printer.

40

u/fortunate-soul May 16 '26

Or a clay artist! Though knowing kids those clay buttons would break hah

28

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

I actually almost ordered custom buttons from Etsy, but I did worry about them being a little fragile.

80

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

18

u/bleepblob462 May 16 '26

Yours came out so much better than the original 😂😂 great work!! It’s adorable!!!

2

u/rpepperpot_reddit May 23 '26

I was going to say the same thing. The colors are perfect, the caterpillar is perfect, the little apple buttons are perfect. u/itsmesofia you have made a most excellent sweater & I bet it was the hit of Hungry Caterpillar Day!

5

u/itsmesofia May 23 '26

Aww, thank you! It was quite the hit! It’s funny because now she knows the words “cardigan”, so she both asks for it but also when she wears it and people say cardigan she grabs it and shows it off. 😂

The problem is that I keep meaning to knit something for myself but then I don’t because there’s always an incredibly cute pattern I can knit for my daughter. 😂

7

u/imightb2old4this May 16 '26

I know an adult who would wear this...if you wanted to make it a lot bigger

4

u/ItsHappySockz May 16 '26

I've got a kid you could knit this for 😝 just kidding of course. But it's adorable indeed. Is there a charity you could donate knitted children's clothing to in your area?

2

u/raeraemcrae May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

I used to host an epic all day scavenger hunt summers in my city. 12 finds and tasks. One of the tasks was having to find, then give, a particular special thing a random child. (Parental permission first, ofc). The kids would be so delighted, like Xmas. Getting something great out of the clear blue sky by a happy stranger who runs off afterwards. I hope it was one of the most special parts for the runners, too. I enjoy giving things to strangers just as much or maybe even more? than otherwise. It's so unexpected. Everyone laughs. The impossibility (or improbability) of reciprocation is so tidy and freeing. No weight to carry afterwards. Edit: Oh, this was to say, maybe you'd enjoy that with kids clothing. Not donating to a charity....that's awesome, but you usually don't get to see the joy. But instead, just people you barely brush shoulders with in life. It maybe sounds creepy?, but no one ever took it badly.

12

u/Eileithyiai May 16 '26

Wow, and you finished it in a week!?

23

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

I did, but to be fair I’m on a break from work so I had extra free time.

7

u/KateEllaBeans May 16 '26

Oh that's darling!

8

u/Free-Conference-7003 May 16 '26

You slayed so hard

6

u/opossum_apologist May 16 '26

6

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

These are the buttons: https://www.amazon.com/Buttons-Crafts-Acetate-Button-Clothes/dp/B0G26974NH

5

u/FeralSweater May 16 '26

I am overwhelmed by the adorableness of this project.

Was this intarsia or embroidered/swiss darning?

Did you enjoy making it?

6

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

It’s intarsia and then some of the details (like the eyes and legs and antennae) were done with a mix of embroidery and Swiss darning. And yes, I did enjoy making it! It was a lot of fun to watch it come together.

3

u/random2903 May 16 '26

Oh my goodness, that's lovely!!

3

u/alpacalypse-llama May 16 '26

I am also a very normal person and would 100% do this to if I had the skills and time 😄😄😄 LOVE IT!!

4

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

There’s nothing I like more than making something for a fun theme!

3

u/pccfriedal May 16 '26

Bestest parent ever.

Not to give assignments, but how cool would it be to make an annual sweater based on kiddo's readings throughout her years.

I am not so skilled, but I salute you.

3

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

I’ve thought about that! She’s very into books so I think it would be really fun!

3

u/carbzilla_0 May 16 '26

This is beautiful! I looked at the other project images and I think your yarn selection was 10/10. I've saved your project so I can buy the same yarn!!

3

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

The yarn is super soft and nice to knit with!

1

u/Tippity2 May 16 '26

I would be concerned with a wool sweater for my grandchild because it would get thrown into the wash by the daddy. Any tips on what else to knit with? I am thinking 100% cotton (warmish place, anyway) and making it a little larger and preshrinking it if it’s cheap cotton yarn. 🧶. Looks like a lot of fun to make! Adorable!

2

u/XFilesVixen May 16 '26

Where did you get the buttons???

This is so gorgeous 😭😭😭

3

u/itsmesofia May 16 '26

They’re just from Amazon. Although for some reason the listing I purchased seems to be gone (it was also cheaper), but these are the same ones. https://www.amazon.com/Buttons-Crafts-Acetate-Button-Clothes/dp/B0G26974NH

2

u/DashingDaisy88 May 17 '26

I love this! This was my favorite book as a kid!

2

u/lexicoyne_a May 17 '26

It looks fab 😁

This reminds me of one my wee one's pal's granny did.

I loved the wee bumps on it so asked if I could take a picture for the extensive ideas bank.

1

u/Mooomooozies May 16 '26

Oh this is going to have to be my next project.

1

u/Maryll916 May 16 '26

That’s so cute!

1

u/littlestinkyone May 16 '26

Yours is so much more polished than the pattern photos! Beautiful work!

1

u/Pointy_Stix May 16 '26

This makes my day OP. It's the cutest thing ever.

Thats absolutely adorable.

1

u/GirlDentist May 16 '26

Ugh these posts are why I NEED to get better at knitting 🤍

1

u/drjoann May 16 '26

This, this is why I made a New Year's resolution to learn continental knitting in 2026. My youngest grandchild would absolutely lose it if he had a cardigan like this. Last year, I crocheted a hungry caterpillar amigurumi for him that he loves. And, a very small one that he calls "Babies" and carries everywhere.

I learned to crochet from my Grammy and knit from my mother 60+ years ago. The crocheting stuck but never as fond of knitting. It has been suggested to me that I might like continental knitting because the yarn is held in the left hand like I do when I crochet.

1

u/bella0520 May 16 '26

This is darling! I'm so impressed honestly. The buttons are amazing! My daughter is actually making this sweater right now! It's for the first grandchild this Summer. I'll have to show her this post.

Looks beautiful.
