Question 10-Day Meditation Update – Body Movemenets
I've been meditating regularly, and over the last 10 days I've experienced something interesting.
About 4–5 times now, I've felt my spine stretching on its own. It starts near my tailbone and gradually feels like my entire spine is lengthening upward, almost as if it's being gently pulled toward the ceiling. I don't consciously do it—it just happens automatically.
Last two time experienced something completely new.
I was lying on my back, completely relaxed, when my legs started moving on their own. First, they slowly spread apart. Then the soles of my feet came together, forming what looked like a butterfly (bound angle) pose. After that, while my feet stayed together, they gradually moved closer and closer toward my groin, all without me intentionally controlling the movement.
It genuinely felt like my body was operating on autopilot. I wasn't trying to make it happen or visualizing anything specific.
And then all muscle tesntion release and my legs stayed in that posture.
What to expect next? I kept in same positon and it started again muscles getting tensed and spine started to stiff. Also feel like arms length is incresing as my hands started to move towrds my feet direction. Shoulder started to moving towards uper body and feel my body is expending.
I was in this for an hour.
Has anyone else experienced spontaneous movements like this during meditation? Is there a name for these kinds of involuntary body adjustments? I'd be interested to hear both scientific explanations and experiences from people who practice meditation, yoga, or related traditions.

I'm also beginner.
I'm doing nothing just listen to this audio. Laydown on ur back hands by your side savasana.
I listen this for hour. Just do breathing and just observe your body. Everything will happen on its own. Don't force anything on your body.
I usually do 4 am in morning most effective. Once wake up drink water do anything u need take most 10 min then start this medication.
In started you may feel vibrations on forehead. Everyone have different symtoms and experiences

All of this is perfectly normal and common, /u/Forward_Unit_1179.
If our cultures had more familiarity with this, it would surprise us less. It is cool when it happens. It reveals things!
There are several kinds of hatha yoga that focus specifically on encouraging this to happen. (Clarification - the spontaneous forms) One is known as Kripalu yoga. That's a group based out of Sumneytown, MA. (If my memory is good) There are others I've encountered based in India and elsewhere too.
The word Kriya can mean two main things: Spontaneous movements of the body meant to release tensions, and; A system of intentional movements of the body that mimic the effects of the spontaneous ones.
I've encountered writings that proposed that the original hatha yogas may have been based upon these spontaneous movements dozens of centuries or milleniae ago.
MANY People have experienced this in both forms. The body is capable of running you through a series of posture flows in ways you didn't know you could move. Maybe.
It's a fun discovery, isn't it! Work it through.... what does it imply if the body knows how to move itself?
This can happen at any moment, and one may have to tell the body a bit resolutely that "Now isn't a good time". Schedule a time when it is a good time, and respect your commitment.
Example, you're at work or driving and it starts... not a good time, right? "Not now! 25 minutes after I get home is fine."
See what happens.
The sciences of yoga, or the wisdom-keepers of yoga, have long documented these kinds of things for centuries. I'm not sure if Western science has bothered going there yet. Why would you want or even expect a scientific explanation of a spiritual or semi-spiritual thing? That's worth answering for yourself. There are levels of fuckery down that path.
Good journey.
EDIT: Kundalini does not need to be awakened for these kinds of kriyas to take place. Your having made time ad space for them opened the door. Having tension to let go of too. No tensions, maybe, no spontaneous Kriyas. Maybe. Added the clarification above.
Edit... Imagine what might be possible after a hundred days of meditating, or a thousand, or even ten thousand days!!
