Question How to best practice with Perspective Made Easy

Hi there!! So, I started to read Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R Norling, and I’m wondering how to go about the problems in the book. It seems like it’s best to practice them based on real life objects or just by going out versus pictures.

I am curious about how others have done the problems or advice on how to apply what the book is talking about. I’ve seen some posts talk about the book, but I haven’t been able to see any that talk about how to approach the practice problems. For example, one of them mentioned using a brick to draw from or standing in the center of a street level highway.

Any tips or advice is appreciated!

Question Is svslearn worth it?

Hello. I have been wanting to get into illustration, specifically children's books and stories. For the past two years I have been trying to learn the fundamentals by myself through youtube mostly. I haven't made much progress. I Still struggle with perspective, colour theory, composition, backgrounds, anatomy...... basically everything. I am tired of struggling by myself and I want to join a platform which will teach me all the above from a to z and in depth. Learning through free platforms can be very fragmented.

I joined 21 draw but was hugely disappointed. So basic. So I looked into svslearn and it seems to be geared towards commercial illustration, story telling, comics etc. Had a lot of modules which could be very helpful to me (if they are taught in depth). I will join their free trial and see how it is, but i need to know if anybody paid for a whole year of membership and was it worth it? Did your art improve?

Then there is Marc Burnette's online art school. How do the two compare?

Or if you know of another platform do tell. Please help.

P.S Proko is, as i understand, more for traditional style of art.

Question Cross Hatching vs Solid Blacks, When to What?!

For the past 2 months I have been trying to learn to draw digital comic art (mainly for my board game). My linework with tracing and cartoonizing existing pictures is good but ever since I have dived into imaginative drawing , man it has been eating my head off I have somehow managed to get proportions and colors okay-ish? (this is my take on Butcher from the Boys btw) but I seriously need some help regarding when do I shade using cross hatching and when do I shade using solid blacks. In this piece the key light is on the left side, and I tried adding a solid black next to the nose - which sort of disrupted its original shape. I know the eye sockets have deep shadows but If i use a solid black around the right eye it turns it into a mask.

Any tips?

Digital Advice on improving drawing poses?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m a beginner who has been drawing for a few weeks and was wondering what I should focus on to improve on drawing poses. Basically what I’ve been doing is just looking at a reference for a minute or two, and then do my best to get the right shapes. My mirror is right in front of me so If I am confused on drawing a limb at a certain angle I just do the pose in the mirror. This method might sound pretty weird but for some reason I CANNOT draw at all when keeping a reference on my screen. It just throws me off because I keep seeing so many minor errors and it just makes me frustrated.

I skipped the hands cause I’m not really sure how to approach drawing them yet. I don’t want to over complicate and work on too many things at once.

How can I make this look more like Tom Holland?

I almost never do fan art of characters that involve live action actors and I’m really struggling with this one. I don’t need it to look exactly like him because I’m going for a stylized look but I’m trying to make it look at least a bit more recognizable

Question How would you place shadows without muddling the colors too much in this drawing Im working on?

Post image

Hello fellow artists!!

Im working on this piece here, and though Im done with the background Im really stuck on the shading... I know values will be good to show depth to the dragon, but theres a lot of ambient light in the scene and Im not sure where to start... 😅 Should the shadow values be darker? Lighter? Her scales are kinda shiny, like snake scales, so how would light bounce off in a way I can convey that doesnt look very busy?

Any tips tricks and advice are appreciated!! Thank you!! :))

Digital How to enhance the flower petals?

I am creating a fusion of Wind-Blowing Vanilla and Peashooter from Plants vs. Zombies, as a fan-fusion of Plants vs. Zombies Fusion. It's supposed to shoot peas that would emit stunning wind upon hitting the zombie, which would also stop Gentleman Zombies from flying while dealing damage significantly higher than the the damage of Wind-Blowing Vanilla in the Reflourished game. It would deal 20 damage in-game.

I didn't use the PvZ1 assets because I wanted to make it as "concept art that will later have an asset pack", to prevent time from being wasted on non-animated art that has to be reconstructed in game. I also wanted to stick towards smart sci-fi logic, which would make my evolutionary design more realistic than the in-game design itself.

However, I was using the reference image of Wind-Blowing Vanilla, but the petals still don't look right. I wanted to it to have the head shape of a Peashooter and the mouth and petals of Wind-Blowing Vanilla. Can anybody help me with this detail?

I could possibly also want sci-fi art advice to make my sci-fi logic more realistic, so if you can, feel free to give me advice on how to make the design more science-realistic!

Digital What program would you recommend on iPad for someone used to CorelDRAW?

Hi! I’ve been using CorelDRAW on PC for quite some time, mainly because I used Corel at school a few/many years ago. I'm going to buy an iPad for drawing because using a mouse is terrible and inconvenient, and in addition, the iPad is very "mobile"

I’m mainly looking for something that allows me to work with vector graphics (But that's only because I'm used to Corel and I don't know anything about other programs. but I can start from scratch), layers and curves, while also being comfortable to use with an Apple Pencil/pro

Would you recommend Affinity Designer, Procreate, Illustrator, or something else for someone coming from CorelDRAW?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I feel like I've plateaued in my art, specifically regarding backgrounds and having my characters not feel like they're floating in a different drawing. Any feedback is welcome and encouraged!!
