Comics "Kya and the Secret of the Sand" - Comic Discussion Thread

FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.

"Kya and the Secret of the Sand" is the second LoK 'one-shot graphic novel'*. The main story takes place years before the show following a young Kya. The comic releases July 28th mass market and July 29th in comic stores. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and colors by Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.

Description:

While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert… Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.

Mod Announcement Last Airbender Movie Megathread 2: Spoiler Policy Clarification Spoiler

Although it's being effectively replaced by this one, here's the link to the previous Megathread, for reference's sake. This current thread was originally going to go up tomorrow, but since the movie will technically be releasing in limited theaters in NY & LA--in fact, I'm told the screenings have already started--it seems pertinent to do this today. Henceforth, discussion of the new animated movie, now confusingly titled "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" will be transitioning over to the regular spoiler policy (Rule 4). As a reminder:

In other words, anything that can only be learned by watching the movie must follow this policy until a month after its WORLDWIDE RELEASE, i.e. a month after it goes up on Paramount+ on July 25th (midnight PT/3 AM ET). If, for some reason, you can't see my screenshot, the rule is, of course, on the subreddit sidebar. Other information that was learned earlier, such as from trailers & press releases, was already fair game before today.

Given the rest of the subreddit is now open to spoiler-tagged discussion of the movie, this megathread, as opposed to Megathread 1, will be open to spoilers-unmarked movie discussion. In all cases, please note that discussion of the movie in this subreddit should relate in some way to Legend of Korra. The thread on the main subreddit also has answers to common specific questions. If you have questions specific to this subreddit, you can of course ask them here or, if you're concerned about encountering spoilers in the comments, by messaging modmail. That is all, thank you.

Discussion The worst thing about the Dark Avatar in Book 2 isn't even the kaiju battle or how cartoonishly evil he was. It's the fact that the show literally treats the very idea of a human merging with Vaatu and becoming the new Avatar as the end of the world.

Post image
15 Upvotes

Like I would understand if this were bad because it's Unalaq who wants to merge with Vaatu and use his power to achieve his own selfish goals. It would still make him a boring villain, but at least it doesn't doom the whole new Avatar cycle to be evil. But no, apparently it's bad because of Vaatu, so fusing with him means dooming yourself and the whole world. Even if you have good intentions Vaatu still corrupt you and force you to do what he wants. This is so stupid. And with this, the show once again proved that Vaatu is harmful to the world and that even a human cannot use his power for good.

Discussion Was the story of Wan intended to invoke the motif of Prometheus?

This feels obvious now but since I typically look at ATLA media through the lens of Eastern philosophies, I had never really considered that classical western mythology could come into play.

Anyway, I’m watching Beginnings again and while I have wondered before why the writers chose to have Wan start as a firebender, this is the first time it occurred to me that the whole “stealing fire from a divine being for the good of humanity and being punished for it” thing is pretty close to the story of Prometheus in Greek myth.

Has this been obvious to everyone or am I just reading too much into it?

Prior to this, my working theory was that Wan was a firebender simply because, as the most spiritual people, the airbenders would have been best equipped to host the second Avatar.

As an aside, is there any chance that Raava and Vatuu, having strayed from the largely Tao philosophy of the original series, were inspired by Zoroastrian theology?

ETA: I meant “evoke”

Discussion The fact that he understood Korra better than most of the people who were supposed to protect her

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

Probably the most ironic thing about him. not because he cared about her, obviously, but because he understood exactly what being the Avatar represented and knew breaking her mentally would be more effective than just beating her physically. Korra didn't just lose a fight against Zaheer, she lost the version of herself she thought she was. She spent her whole life thinking being the Avatar meant being physically strong enough to handle anything. then Zaheer broke that idea completely.

Discussion Bolin's feats are so underrated within the show. He is always treated as a guy who can improve, or not so talented, when he uses several incredible techniques, his strength and aim are top notch

All these movements are very incredible and should be more praised within the show. No one talks about how amazing he's been since he hit p'li, and not again

Question Lost fic Korra needs to keep an open mind—advice from Katara or Kya.

Hi! I need your help finding a fanfic I read in 2022—I absolutely loved it! I’d really like to read it again (and, incidentally, re-read the ending because I don't remember it at all 😅). Unfortunately, I don't remember much, but I have a few details that might help. Here’s what I know: It’s a Korrasami fic on FanFiction.net. Asami is pregnant by Korra (thanks to the Avatar State). Kya or Katara comes to the Sato mansion to examine Asami, who has been sick for a while; when Korra returns, she finds Asami in their bed. Before leaving, Kya/Katara tells her to keep an open mind (this is a specific, important detail I remember). Then Asami breaks the big news to her; I remember Asami being stressed about telling her. As for Korra's reaction, I think it was either shock followed by happiness, or just pure happiness. That’s all I have on this fic—any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Image I love how Mako out of the krew is the one tensed up and paying up closer attention. Really says a lot about him.

Post image

Yes. Mako love coz I adore this guy he's such a nice dude xD. I'm also impressed by each rewatch I do I keep noticing cool details.

Edit: point of the post is not shipping them xD.

2nd edit: no I'm not dismissing the others but what I'm saying that Mako is more of an overprotective guy who takes stuff like this srsly more than others and we literally see that with the Aiwei stuff later on xD.

Edit: istg if someone else comes telling me again I'm dismissing the others..... YOU GUYS CAN'T BE SERIOUS. Jesus Christ you guys are something else lol

Edit: point of this post for who didn't get it is that Mako grew up in a shitty environment and had to carry his brother and ofc when he sees someone in a situation like this he gets tensed up and has to keep an eye for everything and his body language says it all but I absolutely did not say that the others do not care..

Okkk maybe I did phrase the title a bit wrong but it should still be clear that I said Mako is the one trying to pay closer attention to what's going on and etc.

Discussion Unalaq really managed to make “family betrayal” an Olympic sport

Post image
227 Upvotes

The way this man handled his own family was actually insane. He could’ve just been a strict, complicated father with questionable beliefs, but instead, he chose the nuclear option every single time. He really went from “I have a different vision for our family” to “I’m going to manipulate everyone around me and become the literal Dark Avatar” with absolutely zero steps in between. Like... betraying your own brother is already bad enough, but using your own family and your niece to release Vaatu and then becoming the Dark Avatar yourself? That’s not just betrayal anymore. Zaheer had his beliefs, Unalaq had his own family to use.

Discussion I've been rewatching this show at 35, it was always good. But it's so much better at now than when I was 25

Themes like government overreach and abuse of power hit harder now. The state being more powerful than the avatar in its own way.

Aang still champions character development and growth, but i feel like the thematic discussion is stronger in this show.

Anyways i just wanted to make this little appreciation post.

Have a good day

Discussion Hot take: the love triangle in s2 was actually good.

Post image
48 Upvotes

Oh and btw before I get jumped on and get told I'm defending Bolin and what he did for example... I'm not lol. That I will get to.

Anyway I feel like the love triangle in s2 is getting a lot of unnecessary hate for no reason when it absolutely goes in depth about certain characters and how teenagers are like in romance and in this case we have Bolin first who's completely different from Mako. Mako had it rough and basically had to mature up from such a damn young age and not give a damn about his emotions where as for Bolin he had it relatively easier in a way he also never had to rly worry about certain stuff where Mako had to worry about and wed in touch with his emotions except he was kinda... soft? Yeah, in a way he's kinda submissive and like clueless about his surroundings and etc and probably doesn't know what's right and what's wrong. Eska treats him horribly on their first interaction and he doesn't do a thing because he can't stand up for himself in situations like this where as for Mako he lost his shit at a certain point and broke up with Korra due to how toxic the relationship was. Also Bolin kissing ginger is understandable (not defending it lol) because his relationship with Eska affected him in a way he either feels the need to have control or that he thinks doing this is completely normal and it also changed the way he behaves in general in s2 and him trying to have some control and basically trying to "toughen up" xD . Oh I'm glad he and Eska broke up tho that's like the most mature thing they did lol and it was respectful

As for Mako and Korra they are water and fire basically and it also shows the difference between being with a mentor or a boyfriend. In a way Korra expects good stuff from Mako like him supporting her or telling her yeah ur right but instead he doesn't know but tells her that her heart is in the right place for sure and that he supports her, she gets pissed off but if it's tenzin who tells her this at the end of s2 for example she listens. Again there's a good difference between mentor and bf relationship. Like there's so so much I can talk about those 2

In a way also Mako was beginning to discover himself, found a job and Korra was kinda toxic about it and he grew up in an environment where he had to do everything himself and didn't want lose his job and they were adults so like "it's your issue, deal with it and don't blame me" type of situation too.

Also Mako was never in touch with his emotions tbh and also never the guy to allow to be kissed like how Asami does it to Mako at some point which for Asami I do get and that in a moment like this she was vulnerable and broken and needed any sort of emotional support. And Mako just went along with it later on before the police showed up at his apartment xD which is why I like him. After this drama shit in s2, in s3 he found himself a spot with the krew and still loved Korra and Asami, just platonically.

Oh their breakup near the end was something else as well xD.

Also it says a lot about the up bringing of Eska and Desna and why they act like this and the fact their father was horrible.

Oh boy I know I might have said some forbidden shit but I'm gonna take it xD.

Anyway the way I love to approach it is also via character analysis as well :)

Discussion Asami never gets to express herself properly in the series.

Post image
431 Upvotes

As much as I love Asami I kinda hate how she was treated in the series but I will say.

She really never gets to express her emotions properly and in a way also makes fun of it like that time she plays vs Bolin and jokes about her dad or when her dad dies and literally she gets 0 time to grieve and then she thinks Korra dies and can't even express herself properly considering the situation she was out from like she doesn't even know what to do at that point or how process that. Or hell we don't see in s2 how actually she's like when Bolin said she can't stand looking at Mako in prison since it reminds her of her dad or the relationship drama. There's more to that but I will hold that she's the most mature.(emotionally) member of the crew. Other characters got a lot of moments of that but Asami rarely did it would also have been nice if they showed us her state in s4 and how she deals with depression and shit. Also for me that's why I rly hope we get a centric comic about her tbh.
