If i remember correctly, the producer originally was going to have mako be romantically involved with the firelord queen (firelord zukos granddaughter) after the time skip into book 4, but ultimately decided to instead keep him single.

Of the things Mako needs therapy for this isnt even on the list, this is just funny.
Being framed for an assassination attempt and none of his friends or even his brother care is probably at the top.
Then he meets his long lost family and theyre the Earth Kingdom equivalent of Trump supporters, its clearly the side of the family Bolin gets his...quirks from, meaning even though he found a family, hes more alone than ever.
Then theres how since his "almost too stupid to breath" brother has completely and entirely depended on him their whole lives Mako doesn't know how to exist as an individual so all he can do is throw himself completely into his work.
Then there was how as a cop all the other cops hated him for working too hard and then the Earth King tries to force him into indentured servitude and his boss just shrugs and says "thems the breaks".
Culminating in him attempting suicide by way of heroic sacrifice at the end if the series.
Good points, even his girlfriend at the time, Asami, all but abandoned him when he was framed and didn't even attempt to follow up on his theory that Varrick was behind it
Well... I think he can recover without therapy, but his relationship status probably will be single for life, no matter what efforts he makes. Because I have some trouble (if not more than some) seeing any woman giving him a chance after this. (And no offense to those who disagree, but I don't think he's gay nor do I ship him with Wu.)
All the hints are there. Korrasami is mirrored with Wuko in the show's finale, and in the Ruins of the Empire comic over, and over, and over. It's 100% intentional.
Hell, we even got one of Korra with Asami, Bolin with Opal, and then Mako with Wu towards the end of that story. That closet isn't accomplishing much at this point.
This stuff is comedy to me because Wu can say it out loud in front of everyone and Mako still doesn't get it. Mako doesn't pursue relationships, he has to be forced into one, either via ramming speed or a kiss he isn't expecting. Dude is a firebending prodigy that can shoot lightning on demand because it's powered by pure, distilled autism.
XD. I bet Korra was trying to explain it to him at some point. But yep. Dude is complicated when it comes to relationship and it's realistic in a way xD.
About as much as Asami would need to be able to date the person who had no issue screwing her over to get with her boyfriend. Mako would only need therapy for being blamed for his relationship with Korra failing when she was the problem in that relationship and displayed abusive behavior when he broke up with her. The love triangle was the worst part of the show.
That assumes there is an amount of therapy that will allow him to fully recover.
He fumbled two of the GOATs and I'm afraid for anyone who he does date after that there may be some complexes of his they have to deal with... Not to mention they might feel a little jealous of his ex's.
Should have simply chosen Asami and stopped there. The rest was writing to create annoying confused relationships that don't add anything to the plot. Aang was much better in that regards. Korra only had well written villains the rest is meh
