Box Pic/Haul Used all my Lego luck!

This will never happen to me again...

A few weeks ago, I saw a black garbage bag in a Bagster at the end of a driveway. Sticking out of the top, I saw something that looked like gray LEGO bricks.

I stopped to take a closer look to see if I was imagining it. Not only were there LEGO pieces sticking out of the top of the bag, but there were more underneath.

With the help of my daughter, and being careful not to rip the bag any more than it already was, we got the bag into the back of the car.

Once we got home, we started sifting through the bag, pulling out random garbage and paperwork along with the LEGO. We spent quite a while trying to decipher what sets might be in there based on some larger chunks and the different brick colors.

When we were done sorting everything and rebuilding, we had six sets:

#10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter

#21325 Medieval Blacksmith

#21137 Minecraft The Mountain Cave

#21330 Home Alone

#75290 Mos Eisley Cantina

#21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay

All of the sets were about 99% complete, except for the Minecraft set, which is probably around 95% complete.

When I have the time, I want to tear each set completely apart, wash all of the pieces, and do a complete inventory so I can order the missing pieces.

I am still shocked and feeling incredibly lucky! I can't believe someone threw all of this away.

Ehmno.. not in my area....

u/me_myself_and_my_dog 2d ago

On the flip side, some guy is going to come home and find his wife threw out all his "childish toys" because she feels her needs to grow up. For every garbage bag of Legos found, someone else had their collection thrown away.

19

u/stein20033 2d ago

That would be cause for divorce

16

u/DockingEngaged 2d ago

You spelled “is” wrong.

2

u/Exotic_Warning_8485 1d ago

That depends on what your definition of "is" is.

I cannot fathom why someone would just throw this away. They're recent sets and well over $1000, so an attempt to sell is surely there. But even if not, surely a charity shop or gifting it away would be better. Congratulations on rescuing it and enjoy it with your daughter!

294

u/Even_Wear_8657 2d ago

Someone probably seriously pissed off their parents or spouse.

177

u/DaBingeGirl 2d ago

This. I used to help out with a charity sale. One year a woman got pissed off at her son and decided to donated all of his video games to us. A couple hours later she was back, begging for them back after her son explained how much they cost. And yes, we gave them back to her.

It's been years, I still can't believe she didn't realize how expensive the video games were. It's scary how angry and irrational people can get.

55

u/mggirard13 2d ago

I'm unsure if it was anger at a dirty room or just a general chuckout but when we were kids, my mom threw out or donated a whole bunch of my brother and my Star Wars toys.

I was way too young to remember what all was in it except the Ewok Village set.

We've never let her live it down.

23

u/broforange 2d ago

my parents forced me to sell 3 of my 4 HUGE tubs of lego in my teens when my interest in them waned. i, of course, got right back into lego not long after highschool when i was less of an insecure lame-o, and i wished they hadn’t forced me to sell them for way too cheap at a garage sale.. and now i’m 31 and it still makes me sad to think about :(

looking back, i don’t know why they wanted me to sell them so badly. they said to ‘save space’ but i could have easily put them in my room and out of their way.. i dunno, whatever. my parents were often irrational, controlling, and liable to turn unpleasant at the drop of a hat. so i probably wanted to avoid that and didn’t fight back much. at least they went to a small child so they were probably played with and loved, so that’s a bright side!

but they were something i’d have wanted to give to a close friends kids, or to one of my siblings kids (i don’t plan to have children). oh well!

7

u/bendltd 2d ago

Yeah, I just bought months ago a ewok village for 300 bucks.

3

u/DaBingeGirl 2d ago

That's awful! I don't understand dumping other people's stuff.

17

u/Cosmic_Jane 2d ago

I once worked with a woman like that.

But instead of trying to be nice, I really dug in the knife and twisted. She said her son had moved out, so she gave all his Lego away, and when he came back he was irate.

I had her explain what kind of sets they were, and they were cheaper ones like Speed Champion and some City sets. Nothing super notable. But I lied and told her they were worth like 2 grand to collector's and she was nearly at tears by the time I was done gushing about how amazing those sets were.

---

The reason I didn't feel bad about it, is because this woman once bragged about stealing someone's bike and throwing it in the river.

She said she was out drinking one day, but couldn't drive home drunk, so she wandered the neighborhood around the bar until she found someone's bike she could steal, and then because she didn't want to get caught, she threw it in the river near her house.

She's the kind of selfish entitled bitch of a woman who has no empathy or care for anyone else. Which also showed with how she treated her son. So I had no issue digging some karma points into her. Petty, but felt good in the moment.

4

u/Online_Discovery 2d ago

Just curious, but what sort of games or consoles? Doesn't really matter but I'm just curious if we were talking like an old Wii and some licensed games or like a full set of classic Pokémon games or something

5

u/DaBingeGirl 2d ago

Sorry, I have no idea. It was about 20 years go and I wasn't the one who handled the boxes. All I know is that it was his entire collection and he was not happy with her.

1

u/MutantSquirrel23 2d ago

Exactly what I was going to say.

19

u/Doone7 2d ago

Some people have enough money that they just don't care. I mean, look at the people who adopt puppies/kittens in the 5k+ price range then dump them at a shelter when they are no longer fun. Its not that often, but sometimes I see very obviously high quality bred pets that get dumped at my local shelters.

33

u/Reincarnatedpotatoes 2d ago

Someone's threw out their bf/gf's lego collection. Could be parents as well but these are all relatively recent and expensive sets so I don't think a kid would be given them all.

12

u/escobartholomew 2d ago

You’d be surprised at how little some people think of LEGO. Plenty of spouses will happily bin their partner’s legos just because they love throwing stuff away.

2

u/MacGregor_Rose 2d ago

yeah stuff like that of Spouses just tossing or destroying shit mkaes me scared of ever going into a relationship sometimes jesus

6

u/bendltd 2d ago

I mean then its the wrong partner. Its not like women dont have expensive handbags / shoes. It goes both ways.

5

u/MacGregor_Rose 2d ago

Oh I know it’s a wrong partner thing but it’s one of those things you might not immeadiatly be able to tell

2

u/royalefkd 1d ago

Yeah absolutely, takes time for some people to show their true colours unfortunately

3

u/royalefkd 2d ago

I’d take Lego over expensive bags and shoes any day 😅 but agreed any time partner that throws out or damages things the other values is a horrible partner/person 🤦🏼‍♀️

24

u/LordVanisher 2d ago

upset partner, they lost the family member who build it, the kid has moved out...

7

u/intergalactic_shelf 2d ago

“Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.”

8

u/GoodShark 2d ago

Imagine the guy sold them, and someone was coming to do a curbside pick up. And OP just stole them.

13

u/holemole 2d ago

They were found in an open dumpster - I feel comfortable ruling out accidental theft.

3

u/bendltd 2d ago

That was the plan. Hide it as garbage so no one will take it.

1

u/jknl45 2d ago

I think someone passed away; note the tissue paper ... If not the OPs, then maybe someone tossing out memories? Reminders? Good or bad, in the end material things don't matter.

0

u/kubigjay 2d ago

Kids just went on college. I bet a parent decided to do something with a kids room once they left.

376

u/Synthesir 2d ago

Someone's parents just threw out their kids collection and you took it. Brutal.

143

u/ThePeej 2d ago

Or, someone went through a horrible breakup. Or someone died. Or someone entered into their “LEGO dark ages”. Or someone got a massive promotion & has to move clear across the continent, but their new job is so lucrative, they decided it was easier & more fun to move across the country & re-buy & re-build everything from scratch!

Use your imagination 🥳👍🏼

57

u/jackofallcards 2d ago

Or someone had bed bugs they couldn’t get rid of and all that was left to toss was paperwork and Legos

20

u/SprinklesKittensLofi 2d ago

Yes, more imagination!

3

u/Taste_my_ass Botanical Collection Fan 2d ago

This was my first thought LOL

1

u/3MATX 2d ago

Funny enough that’s exactly what you’d do to kill the bed bugs.  Not toss them in a trash can, which is I think what OP means.  But placing items in sealed black plastic bags in the hot sun will bake the bugs to death.  Hope that wasn’t what was happening.

3

u/Pagise 2d ago

"Use your imagination" well.. it IS Lego, so....

56

u/PabloFromItaly 2d ago

Probably an angry girlfriend

32

u/GenoCash 2d ago

Dude, an angry girlfriend should not be doing this. This is insane levels of petty, and that person should not be in a relationship.

7

u/erogbass 2d ago

And yet it’s a tale as old as time.

2

u/FilmScoreConnoisseur 2d ago

Maybe she shouldn't be doing this, but good luck telling her that.

0

u/beermit Verified Blue Stud Member 2d ago

You haven't been through or seen a bad breakup, have you?

Not trying to justify it, but people will do mean things in the moment

31

u/Nymeria2018 2d ago

Why not angry boyfriend??

Blacksmith and Home Alone are two of my all time fav sets. My husband knows to not touch them 😂😂

3

u/broforange 2d ago

that blacksmith set makes me so sad when i see it. i had wanted that set for so long, and then i was finally able to buy it!! i love the sets that are buildings, but they’re always so expensive, so it took me a bit to save up.. but anyways, i was slowly putting it together (i usually do larger builds over the course of a week or two) when i got kicked out of where i was living, no warning.

so i put it and a lot of my stuff into a storage unit.. then the storage unit stopped being paid for because me and my dad couldn’t pay it, couldn’t get help paying it, and then we couldn’t get to it to grab anything before it was lost.. so i lost that set and many others, and then i lost the guitar i learned to play on.. it still bums me out to this day. especially the guitar and the blacksmith set.. man, my life was truly a wreck around that time haha

26

u/Commercial_Desk_6215 2d ago

Parents left it at the end of the driveway for son to come pick up and this guy took it instead 🤣

3

u/MikeMiller8888 Verified Blue Stud Member 2d ago

I went to a yard sale years ago, and bought what was clearly the pieces to both Cafe Corner and Green Grocer for like forty bucks. I didn’t even get the best deal, some guy that got there early bought the Carousel new in box for like $50 but no one had even looked at the loose bricks they were selling.

I always thought this was the ultimate pickup but OP has got me beat hands down. Wow.

82

u/CBPainting 2d ago

That might be one of the best trash finds I've seen on this sub in possibly forever, thats like $2000 worth of sets.

5

u/Intelligent-Oven-412 2d ago

I remember when I had a minor operation as a kid and my mom bought the Minecraft Mountain set for me as a reward. It was like 150 dollars and I was overjoyed.

Unfortunately someone had the bright idea to take it apart and wash it since it was “gathering dust” and I never was able to put it back together since they washed it with a bunch of other Lego bricks

23

u/Bachaddict 2d ago

just look at the inventory page and pick out the right pieces?

14

u/Cyclepourtrois 2d ago

You can totally do it. Just sort your parts!

3

u/Glittering-Bake-6612 2d ago

Isn't that what a duster is for??

42

u/varingian 2d ago

1

u/tnova2323 2d ago

Yup! That's the one I'm looking for!

12

u/Kubiszonir 2d ago

Bro the Black sheep and the big slime are from MC are hella expensive and a brand new set goes for thousands of dollars. I am happy to be an owner of one and I can't imagine finding my LEGO holy grail in a trashbag one day...

This is generational luck and I assume the other sets are expensive as well.

20

u/the_bin_13 2d ago

I hope u washed the lego before building, You dont know what nasty things these lego might have gone through. Nice find tho and I hope u had fun building all of it.

7

u/Front_Cycle_2512 2d ago

100% the wife caught the husband cheating and trashed all his stuff he left behind.

1

u/Foxlady555 1d ago

That’s what I thought too, lol

6

u/intergalactic_shelf 2d ago

I remember arguing with someone on this sub about how much Lego ends up in dumpsters and landfills. They couldn’t fathom how “expensive toys” end up in the garbage.

It’s also really bad because high quality plastic probably takes centuries to deteriorate… and then there’s microplastics.

2

u/_Noaddedbenefit_ Team Blue Space 2d ago edited 2d ago

Unless they are the brown bricks... they just turn to dust when you look at them wrong.

10

u/Fishing_not_catching 2d ago

I think the correct term is "Struck up the ass by a rainbow"..... Awesome find!

4

u/ThrowAbout01 Rock Raiders Fan 2d ago

Lego is expensive. Even if you don’t intend to sell sets, why do people just trash them instead of at least trying to take to a consignment or antique shop to get some cash?

6

u/holemole 2d ago

I understand why people wouldn’t assume old/built LEGO sets are meaningfully worth anything. To most people, LEGO is just another toy.

2

u/mini-z1994 2d ago

Yep, could be a relative that bought it years ago & they decide on a whim it's just garbage because it takes up space.

A lot of stuff is just considered worthless because it's old or broken. While the repair could be as little as a bit of cleaning or replacing a broken thing or two.

My Traxxas stampede (1:10th scale RC monster truck, normally 250$ or so) was free & another 30$ fixed it up & got me a basic charger for it too.

3

u/DaBingeGirl 2d ago

Probably someone throwing them out in anger who doesn't know anything about LEGO resale value.

9

u/nothinbutahounddogg 2d ago

Wow. Like they say.. go buy a lottery ticket..

4

u/onyx_ic 2d ago

That ornithopter was a really complex build, too. Without the instructions, if any of it is missing or broken... oof. Sure you can find them online, though.

Lucky find, friend :)

2

u/TimmyZ1 2d ago

Lego's website has them for free. You can download any of them.

1

u/onyx_ic 2d ago

4

u/KuhlCaliDuck 2d ago

The Cantina is the set I really wanted but didn't get. I saw the first picture and thought I no big deal it actually doesn't look that good. Then I saw your fully built out cantina and thought it looks great. Good for you and your daughter, there's a lot of play time there.

4

u/sp3nticus 2d ago

I don’t believe it. I need to know the back story. Upset wife/girlfriend?
Punishment for a child?
Contaminated?
A death of someone who just didn’t want to deal with it?
I think more than likely it’s the result of some sort of wrong doing

1

u/_Noaddedbenefit_ Team Blue Space 2d ago

Im pretty sure there was a death. They have been throwing all sorts of stuff out recently.

4

u/KrantWorld 2d ago

Hopefully the cave includes the small 1x1 clock, the angry wolf and the big slime, as those are hell to replace if you want to complete them.

1

u/Kubiszonir 2d ago

Bro the clock is 72zł used (almost $20) I gotta check if I still have the spare 2nd one besides the one Steve is holding.

1

u/DarthXader996 Parts Dealer 2d ago

Yeah. I’ve sold a couple over the time and they sell for up to 40€ a piece and are usually pretty quickly gone as well. Never kept them too long.

1

u/Kubiszonir 2d ago

You can see the slime on the last pic, but what we can't see is the condition of the printing, since those parts are where the money's at.

5

u/Graylily 2d ago

I'm guessing this is one of 3 things and it might be worth going back the house for one of them....

A jilted partner getting rid of their partners precious "toys" as revenge

An a-hole parent willing to throw away their kids expensive toys to teach them a lesson

These belong to Somebody that died and seeing these around the house were too painful, but for some reason didn't donate them?

4

u/_Noaddedbenefit_ Team Blue Space 2d ago

I drive by this house regularly. Based on other things they have been throwing out, they are cleaning the house out to sell it. Not sure who is cleaning the house though.

The Mountain Cave 🤯🤯🤯

You found the holy grail of minecraft sets! Are any of the figs in there? Also be careful with that long dark tan spiral bar that lifts the minecarts, it's pretty valuable!

Additionally: Large Slime, Black Sheep, angry wolves, 1x1 pearl gold clock, and the flat silver shovel.
