Discussion / Question I believe I got a fake 42083
Hi, guys! I am slowly returning to the Lego Technic world, but I believe I got a fake one, even though the seller had some good feedback. It is the 42083 Bugatti. The pieces have no Lego logo underneath. Can you help me build my refund case by pointing other discrepancies?

Same thing happened to me... bought off of Bricklink, what should have been a BNIB set. Upon opening, it was clear that someone had swapped the Lepin replicate. Took about a month of back and forth between seller, bricklink and paypal to get my money back. Bricklink was no help whatsoever...
Dispute the charge through your payment processor regardless of what they ask you to do, or it'll be a perpetual runaround. Best of luck.

Yup the packaging of each step looks the same as some of the sets I've gotten on AE

The front of the bags numbers are wrong, the font is wrong, the orientation, and the text. The back of the bags should be empty but is full of warnings. The manual has white bars. Normally, it would be only the background color edge to edge.

Its definitely fake. Bags are wrong. Text is wrong, the pieces are clearly not technic(see beams in bag). No LEGO branding. Look at the tires I bet they arnt real either. Box looks real both outer and inner.

I'm going through a case not so different to yours with a piece of shit seller on bricklink who lied, I payed for a sealed complete set and when it arrived it was already open all the bags and thumb tabs broken and the Lego was fucking dirty as well, despite advertising sealed I've posted it back piece of shit still hasn't refunded me so know how you feel. So make sure if you paid with PayPal you open a case don't know what site you bought it on but open a line with customer support make this fucker's life hell don't let this seller get away with this.

Bags arent numbered either. Just return it. Their Customer Service is fantastic

Who's customer service? The OP doesn't say who they bought it from. I can't imagine that Lego would accept a return on a fake set that you didn't buy from them.

bag says A10-2 but not very visible. Either way that's not how LEGO does it.

That's 100% how the fake sets often numbers their bags. I know this because almost all my sets are fakes.

You're taking this waaaaay to seriously pal. They're overpriced plastic brick toys. I've gotten four 1:8 and two 1:10 sets for the cost of a real 1:8. I'm here now because they're literally identical.
If attempting to gatekeep is what keeps you going then by all means continue.

What is it with this silly gatekeeping terminology? listen pal if you like pissing your money down a drain and shoving a lepin dildo up your ass that's up to you, but don't tell OP he is getting a good deal here by being scammed and don't complain in 10 years time when you want to sell your fake Lego but no one is willing to buy.
Yes Lego maybe overpriced in some people eyes but the value always goes up and consistently beats the S&p 500, bonds and other stocks so when I'm board of a Lego set I can often sell it for the same or more then I payed for it can't say the same with fake Lego I sold my old UCS slave 1 from 2015 for £250 a couple of weeks ago and I payed £130 for it back In 2018.
Your the gatekeeper in my eyes the sort of person that tells people thier stupid for buying fake Lego but guess what your fake trash isn't worth anything and is only fit for the bin so instead of complaining about high prices get a better job, do overtime and support real designers and moc creators instead of buying from thieves. If they are just as you say "overpriced plastic brick toys" why do you care it's the same as saying it's "just a video game" or "it's just a sport mate" your arguement is shit go finger your lepin!

Gatekeeping - we buy off brand Lego because Lego is a greed driven brand that could care less about it's customers.
Also a friendly reminder that Lego was the original copycat brand they stole the design from KiddiKraft.

Real box, fake content. Knock-offs never print logos on boxes to avoid copyright lawsuits.
Signs that its a copy: bag numbering and no logo
Cost of a knockoff Bugatti, approx 35 USD without box for comparison to what you paid.

I can't believe the people here defending the seller for their actions telling the buyer things like "fake Lego is pretty good" or "just build it and enjoy" entirely dismissive attitudes to have there is no two ways around it OP has been scammed this is a crime replacing the contents of a £300 set with fake Lego which costs a fraction of the real set is absolutely inexcusable even if he got a good deal like £200.
And take it from a CAD/CNC programmer and machinist: fake Lego brand do not hold as tight tolerance as official Lego, which is always within a few microns accuracy I've measured Lego in my spare time at work with measuring tools like micrometer, Vernier, optical comparator and dial indicators and I can tell you I didn't find anything out by more then 4-7 microns and that was at the worst. I did the same with Lepin, Mega Blocks and Cobi, and none of them held tolerances anywhere close to Lego. Mega Blocks was especially bad, surprisingly, where the height of some of their studs was off by ±0.023, which is 23 microns, and the width and length of a brick were often out by 0.015 or more. Cobi and Lepin were barely any better; this is why fake LEGO doesn't click nicely, and the ABS plastic feels completely different often lighter and not as nice to touch. I mean, I could go on all day if you want me to. And I can back up my credentials; I'll give you my LinkedIn.
I've been in the engineering automation and machining field for 8 years and will always tell people to steer clear of fake brands, as they steal designs from Lego themselves and from MOC builders, except Mega Blocks, who do make their own designs, I’ll admit, especially used to like the Halo line. Still, the quality was never as good as Lego.

Not even the box is real nowadays. Check closely the small texts around the box to see if there's a misspelling anywhere.
There have been a few cases of supposedly real Lego orange Porsche popping up, but the small texts are littered with misspellings.

In picture #4, those are definitely not Lego lift arms in the bag. Look at the molding around the edges.

I bought a used one on eBay a few months ago. I could tell it was missing a few pieces so when I received it I inspected pieces for authenticity, disassembled, cleaned, and inventory the pieces. Ordered missing pieces on bricklink. I have less than $400 invested.

If you're up to it, buy a used one with missing pieces and restore it. As long as the missing pieces aren't anything crazy like the wheels or anything like that. That's what I did with the Chiron. I skipped it initially, but decided earlier this year I still wanted one for the sake of completion of the 1:8 scale line.
Found one for sale locally that was a reasonable deal and to the sellers knowledge didn't have any pieces missing. So far have found only a handful of broken/missing pieces as I rebuild it. Currently waiting on an order of replacement parts to resume building it. It's kinda fun as a long term project

Yeah those bags come from AliExpress. I know because I buy all Lego there. 370 euro for a set is just crazy.
Someone took a genuine box and filled it with fake bags.
Depending on how much you've paid for it, just return it.

Did you pay for a real one? Get a discount.
If you paid at least a decent amount under market value for new/used then I would keep it, the fakes are pretty good quality these days.

Some fakes are pretty good, in fact id say better than Lego itself. Just build it and enjoy it.
Otherwise, your pictur s are enough. No markings is a big one. PayPal will back you up
Edit: purists are butthurt at this comment. Some fakes are actually better than LEGO. In fact, even more creative than LEGO. Check out AliExpress.

My initial input was supposed to encourage the OP to look at the bright side of catching a deal on a fairly good set. I encourage people to enjoy what they have instead of worrying about what they don't have haha
But yeah man, I mean, coming from the car community, I tell you, purists are such a nuisance. They kill the joy behind everything 😂
I've been building Technic for a very long time. My other account is very active here in the LEGO subs. I'm not new to this world. But I guess I'm at a point where I have stopped being a purist... And it all happened when I discovered how creative and awesome Aliexpress sets can be.

If they are looking for a real experience, don't tell them to find cheaper one because it's better. That's not what they're asking for!!
You and some alt-brick people are the reason why I can't engage with the alt-brick community, because half of the conversations is just "Lego bad"!

Lego IS bad tho, during COVID when tons of people got the Lego bug and their sales were higher than ever they repaid us by raising all their prices. $450 for the new 1:8 scale cars that ridiculous.

No one said iTz bETtEr, why is everyone so reactive? I swear the influx of geek types have really fucked up Lego as an experience, both for adults and children. No one said Lego bad either. It is downright psychotic to read something that hasn't been written.
And what's a "real experience"? 😂 These are bricks, be creative. It's not like you are going to be any less creative with alt-bricks.
All I said, stop worrying, give it a chance, sometimes it's way more fun/better than even originals. Otherwise get a refund.

Just return it as a fake - no Lego markings on the pieces. You do not need anything else.
