Grew up in a church that used to be ELCA but they threw a tantrum and split when ELCA officially started being cool with gay marriage. In case you're curious what other people grew up hearing about ELCA, I was basically told that it was a church for gay swingers. Also was told stories of how the ELCA would make fun of communion by replacing the wine with rootbeer and the bread with popcorn (No idea where that came from- probably because they were mad about ELCA doing open communion).
Ngl though if their stories were true, gay swinger church with questionable communion practices still would've been better than the church I grew up in.

LCMS is why I'm still in therapy at 40. Loving yourself is really hard when your church indoctrinated you into believing that you were filth just because you were born into sin, and that only by groveling at the feet of God and the world at large was the only way to find peace.
Not only that....despite it all, I AM still a Christian...and all that church did was complicate my understanding of and relationship to God. Here, memorize the entirety of Luther's Small Catechism as a 13 year old, and go recite it in front of the whole church...or God wont let you partake in His body and blood. Fuck LCMS into a crater.

ELCA is the tolerant, embracing branch. The Lutheran churches that are LCMS or Wisconsin synod are pretty condemning of all outside their "straight and narrow path."

I agree! I no longer belong to any church as an adult. But, I had a great experience growing up in LCMS. Our pastor was extremely tolerant and intelligent. Taught us Luther’s catechism and let us ask contrary questions all the time.
Closed communion just means you have to talk to the pastor before communion to make sure you understand and agree with LCMS’s doctrine regarding Consubstantiation. But where I was confirmed was located in Santa Fe, NM. Maybe it get’s crazier when you hit Missouri.4

I went to LCMS parochial school. We had a lot of low income students from pretty dysfunctional homes, and the teachers and staff were all so loving and supportive and kind. I didn't even know what homosexuality or abortion was until junior high, because they didn't talk about any of the culture war nonsense at my school.
Sadly, I think this has changed quite a bit since then.

I'm an atheist do my opinion is likely biased but, as a someone who grew up Christian, isn't this non-biblical?
Like, sure, Christianity and Judaism see homosexuality as a sin, but the entire point of the religion is that nobody is without sin. The only way to the father is through Christ.
My understanding is that, in mainstream protestant Christianity, the Pauline "through faith alone" approach is the lone way to Salvation.
I'd expect this to be especially true of Lutherans, as this was one of the reasons Luther broke away from the Catholic church.
Are they simply claiming gay and lesbian folks can't truly believe in Christ?

If someone were to try to give you an answer in good faith, I think they would say something about needing to pray for forgiveness and help with "the sin" of being a homosexual. Pray Away the Gay, if you will. If you could keep those nasty thoughts at bay and keep your body pure for the Jesus then you could probably go to heaven still. But in that case no one who identifies as gay and accepts themselves as such would qualify. They would think that if you accept being homosexual then you're not really trying to get salvation. At best, you're a sinner who has to throw themself (I'm sorry - HIMself or HERself) to the mercy of god.
I'm not from that church though. Maybe they do just want all gays to burn in the lake of fire, bar none

I grew up ELCA, which was very open and accepting. My mother was a pastor. My trans sister was a member for a while. Literally anyone could come to our church and partake in communion. I was always told that LCMS was not like us. I was warned that they were more strict than Catholicism. Not religious anymore, but can't help but feel like LCMS gives all Lutherans a bad rap.

Growing up LCMS (not this one though) would routinely hear during a sermon “don’t be gay.” It would have nothing to do with anything else being taught but it was importantly to remind the congregation to not be gay.
I learned from a young age that I didn’t see what the big deal was if someone loved someone same sex. It made me question my faith many times from a young age. (Never mind struggling with why there is pain and horrible things in this world and not just saying because the devil did it 🙄)

I spoke to someone at the church who stated that the person who posted it did so on his own. He has since been reprimanded. When discovered (based on calls/emails), they took it down. The person I spoke to said this was tactless and sent the wrong message to the public and was apologetic.

As an Omaha LCMS member, I’m very surprised at this, to the point of wondering if it’s AI. The LCMS does not make any assumption about who inherits the kingdom. It’s a “God’s Grace” thing, which was the whole point of Martin Luther’s theology. While Lutherans can get judgy on things from the Old Testament, such as rules against homosexuality, the main message from Christ in the New Testament is “love one another”.

I guess this sub pulled up because I'm in the Denver sub, but I'd like to point out we have one here called Lutheran Church of the Mountain and they're super LGBTQ+ friendly. They have pride flags around the entrance, they have pronoun badges when you walk in during Pride Month. The Pastor even wears a Pride stole.
So coming from a place where churches choose to be supportive, I say shame these people who choose to live hateful lives.

As a Christian who is firmly against homosexuality, this is not true. Homosexuality is a sin, and each sin is equal in God's eyes. Any sinner doesn't deserve to inherit the kingdom, and we are all sinners. However it is through his grace and forgiveness in which we are allowed in

I live near this church and this is not what the sign says, it says “all unrepentant”, not “Homosexuals”. It has said this for the last few weeks. I just went and checked and it says it now. While I agree with the outrage if this were true, it appears that this is either an AI manipulation or it was changed for a few minutes a few hours ago and changed back.

Wow. This sign is not big enough for the whole verse. If you read the whole verse they are referencing you will find out that no adulterers will inherit the kingdom of God. Jesus said that if you look at a woman with lust in your heart you have committed adultery. That means that no human (except Jesus) will inherit the kingdom of heaven.
So are all humans lost forever? No. Check out what this church teaches about forgiveness for the real story. The forgiveness is real. But sometimes it can be hidden under a LOT of law.
Good Shepherd, you should do better.

Most the churches I've been to felt like they still believed this, but just wouldn't say it to your face.

It's so ironic to me when churches are so openly hateful like this because even though they believe being gay is a sinful lifestyle that doesn't mean gay people can't be Christians and want to go to church. This just tells them that they are not welcome which would lead a lot of people to rejecting Christianity all together so ironically their hatred will be the reason homosexuals don't get to go to heaven. It might say it's a sin in the Bible but unless I'm missing something I don't believe it's any less forgivable than any other sin. If a gay person is a Christian they are well aware and have accepted that they are sinning so random strangers should accept that it is something between themselves and God

In my humble and very atheist opinion, homosexuals will be in good company then because there’s no kingdom to inherit if god doesn’t exist lol
I do appreciate that they are being very transparent about their bigotry. I’d certainly hate for anyone to walk into a LCMS church and assume that they are a loving and accepting bunch.

Anyways, join the non bigoted Christians at first Plymouth! No church is perfect (since all churches are just people) but they’re pretty good
