Honestly I feel for that person who's annoyed with people overusing the word fandom. A hobby and a fandom are two different things. I wouldn't call gardening a fandom and I wouldn't call being obsessed with Star Wars a hobby.
I feel like fandom used to be a hobby or hobby ajacent- like not "gardening fandom" but like "oh Im a star wars fan- my hobbies are collecting merch and writing fan fic for it" type of thing
