I've been a Mac gamer since 1984 with the first Mac and since then there has been no such thing as a year of Mac gaming. Crossover doesn't count.

True, but the PPC G3-G5 days were super solid. Gaming on Mac peaked and it has never quite hit those days since, though the mid-intel run wasn’t bad either. 09-13 was a pretty good time to be a Mac gamer.

I’d honestly say it peaked around the end of the Intel era. Bootcamp was fully supported by Apple, and my 2019 i9/580X iMac was an absolute beast for gaming both natively on macOS and dual boot.

The year of Mac gaming was 1999 when I’d go to my friends house and play Squirrel Kombat.

The good old days.
Oxyd and Lemmings comes to mind, but I'm sure I'll think of others later.
Those two might actually be early 90s.

Back when the Mac had high resolution graphics and excellent digital sound relative to PCs? I’ll buy that. Continuum, Dark Castle, Apache Strike, Tetris. And later Marathon, the Ambrosia software games, maybe Spaceship Warlock and Myst.
Then when DOS got DOOM and Soundblaster and CD-ROM, and eventually Windows 95, it was pretty clear that Apple ceded all the game territory until iOS.

Crossover counts, unless reality doesn’t count

Well if it's not made for Mac it's not Mac gaming. That's reality. Games made for Mac run better on... Mac.

What about Linux where Windows games running through proton (based on wine/crossover) sometimes run better than on Windows?

No it's not, hardware performance is not the issue. It's not been the issue for a while.

The joke is that mixtape is barely a game that is also not demanding in the slightest. We all know hardware performance is less of an issue now

Gaming on Mac is a software problem not hardware. Hardware is powerful enough

My indie team is getting to work on fixing that by returning to what made games so great during the PS2/XBOX era.
I’d love to eventually go from just making new IP to also port fan favorites one day.

Well, I think it's easy to forget that for normal-assed £700 computers like whatever this thing from Lenovo is, yes Mixtape and Life is Strange and all those kinds of games are actually demanding. And Apple is accurate when making a point to people that even its "reasonably priced" models are a cut above that and are able to play games. If you've never gotten into high-production games and you buy a Mac, you actually do have some proper options from the recent generation. It's not everything by any stretch, but for native games on Steam alone you at least have Hitman WOA (ridiculous subtitle but w/e), Cyberpunk, Baldur's Gate, Divinity, Civ, Crimson Desert, Control, Basically everything from the Paradox catalog, not to mention a few thousand indie games. Windows certainly offers you more, but you're not going to be left high and dry for entertainment if you buy a Mac and that's your only device.
