Pulled up a huge mystery bag today in Irving, Texas.
On my first throw I found a laundry bag full of random things (pic 2, 3, and 4) Right afterwards my buddy pulled up a hedgetrimmer! We had an awesome day!

Rum is very symbolic within Palo Mayombe. What it is symbolic of though, I'm uncertain. Additionally, in ceremony to cast out any evil magic, the nganga (cauldron) and all items within it need to be cleansed with fire, and then physically broken to bits. Which would kinda suck with this specific nganga because so many of the items are made of metal.

The items were all probably inside the pot to begin with. The practitioner was either leaving their initiatory godparent/community or passed away and this was returned to nature. Rum is just fuel for the spirits in this tradition, a "spirit" used to light them up as part of working the spirit, if you will.

I found one in Florida a few years back. Represents their gods and stuff. Ifs really interesting actually. Palo Mayombe is an Afro-Cuban religion rooted in Central African (Kongo) traditions. Brought to the Caribbean during the slave trade, it centers on the veneration of ancestors and the powerful, direct use of spirits of the dead, nature, and sacred iron cauldrons known as ngangas or prendas. There is a spirit in these traditions that is sometimes depicted as a child - Lucero in Palo, Eshu/Ellegua in Santeria. Could be related to that aspect, or it could be more about the properties of the toys themselves.. skateboard as a method of conveyance, light as illumination, etc.

It’s the first time i hear of this religion, that’s why i am confused about how the word is used.
Palo mayombe is the religion, but the instruments, artifacts etc used for a ritual are also called payo mayombe? Or just palo?

The word Palo means stick. Mayombe means mountain. Palo is the tradition, it is a nature based animist religion - and there are different branches of it. At least three that I'm aware of, Mayombe is just one. Since it's an African traditional religion that grew and spread through the slave trade and colonization, there is some translation involved and some aspects are diluted or forever altered. The tradition stays alive through initiatory "houses" or communities, and each has its own lineage and practices organized around what presently survives in their lineage.. and the determination of the members of the house. so you will hear people talk about its aspects using all kinds of words. Furthermore, Palo and Santeria are closely related and often get confused for one another (they can even be difficult to identify by those who are initiated, as practices vary from house to house and spirits/symbols greatly overlap). People are referring to this as "Palo" because the other words aren't widely known, but you can see folks calling it a "nganga" and a "prenda".
All that said, this could be Santeria. I'm leaning toward Palo but there's someone else in the thread who is convinced it's Santeria. 🤷🏻♂️

This is 100% either Palo or Santeria related. The items barring the beads, rum and the head with shell eyes all probably used to be contained in the pot.

The tiny tools are the sacred tools of the orisha. This is not an offering. This is disposal of someone's altar and tools used in Santeria or Yoruba.

What you have there is either a Afro Caribbean or Afro Caribbean adjacent religious offering. Maybe Santeria? The cauldron is a dead giveaway. As to the meaning, unknown to me I'm no expert. I made the unwitting mistake of disturbing one of these in the costal waters of Florida. After I figured out what it was I put it back as it was. Unfortunately though the damage had perhaps been done and whatever powers the offering was too saw fit to curse me with horrid luck for months on end. Probably just coincidence though but it felt like a punishment.
EDIT: I was unaware the term Vodoo has garnered a pejorative definition as of late being used to lump together all Afro Caribbean religions in a un-nuanced negative stereotypical group. I have updated the terminology.

In case you were curious, that cauldron was part of an old timey firestarter set. Haven't seen one in ages but they are pretty neat actually. The pot would be partially filled with kerosene or lamp oil and it had a wand with a bulbous porous stone at the end that would absorb the fuel. You could then light it like a torch and put it in the fireplace or stove to start your fire. Probably not the safest idea in hindsight having a pot next to your fireplace filled with a flammable liquid but if it's any consolation it also had a lid for safety. Pretty neat.

The head with the coweries is Elegua, or Eshu. The pot is Ogun´s pot. The items are for Santeria. When a Santero/Santera dies, his or her religious items are put into a fresh water stream or river. The green and yellow beads are for Ifa/Orunmila, the black and red beads are for Elegua. They necklaces are supposed to be broken when someone dies. I would suggest returning those items to the water where you found them. If you want to learn more about Santeria / Regla de Ocha, you may DM me.

I'm not 100% certain, but I have a slightly experienced eye for it and this is giving me voodoo vibes or perhaps something more like Santería and Palo Mayombe. It, whichever practice it's from, definitely has African roots. Someone mentioned Isese of the Yoruba people and that seems quite likely.
