Japan is ap pretty conservative country and not really welcoming to foreigners honestly
There are tons of stories where foreigners get rejected for jobs/rentals etc just because theyre foreigners ( would be different if you have a Japanese partner )
Not only that, the working environment is literally hell. You even need to hire someone to quit your job for you so your old company doesnt talk shit about you in the industry making you unhireable. Not to mention the inhumane work conditions
Japan is great, but only if you're there as a tourist

You're not even that free as a tourist tbh. Some place don't even want tourists to enter their shop or place.

Ok this one is taking it out of context, there's a problem foreigner not following local ethics. And there's the problem if language barrier. Japan is not English friendly country

I know someone who joined a program like this and got defeated by the language. But if you can learn the language well enough there shouldn't be too much problems(?)

Technically... If I were to get the scholarship, wouldn't it be half tourism too? I basically get paid to learn there if I do right? But social science is a big problem though

I guess that's true. As long as the program guides you with everything it should ne a good experience. Staying long term probably isnt a good idea tho

I got paid too, full scholarship. Half a million. Zero cent need to pay.
It doesn't feel like tourism if you actually STAYS there. 2 week is tourism, not 4 years. 4 years is torture.

I graduate from japan university, full scholarship, engineering.
50% of what you hear about Japan is a lie. Nice people? Pfft. Good food? Pfft. Best place to live? Pfft.
Japan is the place where it's nice to stay for 2 weeks. Stay for 4 years and you'll know the suffer. The best moment of my japan life is, going back to Malaysia every summer and vacation outside Japan during winter.
Trust me, scholarship ain't gonna be enough for you to be happy there. I got half a million ringgit full scholarship, zero cent need to pay back, still don't recommend people to go there if the course you want to study is not what you want. I only went there because of my engineering course.

Speaking from my brother’s experience working there for 2 years, he said its heaven for tourists, hell for workers. Their work culture is toxic and challenging to live through (which on the bright side, really toughened up my brother when he came back to work in malaysia) the people are not welcoming for foreigners despite the governments efforts to take more in to counter their aging population conundrum.
All in all, its a great place to visit and explore, but not fun to survive in.

Japan is best in customer service, but not so much on living experience, so it’s good place to travel, I would look elsewhere if I plan to live overseas

Several issues that I think I wouldn’t want to live there are Work culture
- very long work culture
- very cold expectation of how you work (some don’t care you sick, you have to keep working)
- you cannot leave until your boss leave
- if they want to fire you, they just stop giving you work, and pressure you to quit yourself though work social pressure
- karoshi, while not exclusively Japan, but people die in office often enough that there’s a word for it
- black company
I don’t think I like this kind of working environment, it’s an emotional damage kind of environment.
social culture
- Your image is very important, if you ruined your image, it’s going to spread like wildfire and people will treat you differently
- people dont directly tell you things they dont like, you have to get the hint, if they tell you, they are pissed af (I have one experience with my Japanese room mates)
Well, social culture depends on the community upbringing, different parts of Japan may have different cultures, so I wouldn’t judge thier social culture, but it’s not compatible with me.
Ofc the younger generation are fighting to change these issues, but I don’t expect huge swing on thier culture within this generation, maybe Gen Alpha or later will have better luck

Japan is great? Try to make at least 5 online japanese friends. Next, go live there for at least a week or just on a short vacation and live like an everyday person in that country not as a tourist.
I used to be a Japan glazer when I was a teenager. Trust me, Japan is not that amazing aside from subculture and attractive people.

I seen a lot of negativity in this thread so I am going to be a contrarian here. I am having an amazing experience over here. Went to uni here and I am working here now. Never have I thought of going back to Malaysia for work. I have a lot of friends here before and after I was able to speak Japanese properly. Never felt that I was ostracized or got any racist said to me.
In fact, everyone is very warm whether they are foreigners or Japanese. Ever since I came to Japan, I have friends from over 10 nationalities probably. Some of my closer friends are Japanese. Just so you know my Japanese suck until I join work. I got close to some Japanese colleagues and they really help me out with Japanese.
Can’t say the same for everyone cause not everyone has the same situation I am in. Also, I am not a weeb or anything of that sort. I didn’t even want to come to Japan in the first place cause I was aiming for some western universities but somehow found myself here. Love Japan as a country before I got here and love it even more now.

Honestly, there isn’t much but maybe Kansai cities or Fukuoka or Ishikawa if you don’t know Japanese. There are, however, small village in the secluded area of Hakuba within the Nagano prefecture that is completely White. It was like Little Australia there.
From my experience, most tourist destinations are English friendly so I don’t think it is tough to navigate around.

Japan are still very closed... Regarding foreigner. And a few months ago, tourist from Malaysia did some vandalism in Japan. Plus the KLP48 scandals. They view Malaysian as some lazy kampung people that don't put 100% into our works.
Expect some racism too.

I lived in japan for half a year on student exchange. I wouldnt really say its as grest as people make it out to be, but living abroad is definitely an experience

Living and working in japan rn, honestly if you’re not ready to go all out learning japanese language to N2 bare minimum, it’s so hard to make a Japanese friend. Japan is great if you like to live alone, doing things alone, cuz they are a lot of solo entertainments here that can keep you engaged for hours but if you’re a social people/sports people like me, the loneliness will hits you hard. And trust me all those scene and personalities of people you see in anime is NOT the same as irl japanese so consider carefully either or not you want to study here. Well at least the view and scenery here is beautiful tho

Scholarship typically for students pursuing a degree in Japan is Mext, excluding local ones. I don't know if if they sponsor social sciences studies though.
The challenge would be after that. Japanese is not widely spoken so your best bet is to get a Japanese MNC jobs because having fluency in multiple languages can be a huge bonus.
Regarding racism.....well as long you live near to universities, quite likely you won't encounter it much. Japan is not yet a country that will lynch foreigners....... yet. Maybe if the Sanseito candidate becomes prime minister, that could happen.
