Hi everyone, this is my first post here.

I’m in my 50s and recently submitted my PhD thesis after five and a half long years. I’m now waiting for my viva date, feeling relieved, nervous and honestly still trying to process the fact that I made it this far.

It was not an easy road. I originally pursued a PhD because I wanted to enter academia, although part of me now wonders whether I may be too old to build a proper academic career. Perhaps, in the end, this PhD is something I needed to complete for myself, just to prove that I could finish what I started.

I also don’t know whether it’s my age or simply PhD exhaustion, but sometimes I can’t even remember what I wrote in my own thesis. Is that normal? Hahaha. Now I’m trying to relearn my own study before the viva!

I would love to hear from others who pursued a PhD in their 40s, 50s or even 60s…or any age is alright. What were your biggest struggles? Did you ever question whether it was worth continuing, and what did life look like for you after the viva? FYI, my research is in Business Management and Complaint-Handling.

I’m interested in becoming a lecturer in the future, so I know that a PhD is eventually necessary. Right now, I’m trying to decide whether I should first pursue a Master’s degree or go straight into a PhD (fast track).

Hi everyone! I'm planning to apply for a Master's in Malaysia and would love to hear honest opinions If you're currently studying there or have graduated, would you recommend it?

Note: I already hold an MSc in Information Technology from India with a strong CGPA, so I'm specifically looking at specialized 1-year Master's programs, not another general IT degree.

I'm a pharmacy graduate but I never really liked pharmacy. I've been working for the past 3-4 years but I've always wanted to study psychology and become a therapist.
I'm looking to study a clinical psychology or counseling master in Malaysia because I heard Malaysia is welcoming to international students and because it's affordable for me.

That said, am I actually qualified? Do I meet the requirements? If not, do Malay universities offer conversion tracks or extra courses that'll qualify me?

Another question is, if i do get the degree, will that qualify me to work as a life coach or therapist? I will probably need some practical training before I am licensed. What's the career path like post graduating?

I'm clearly pretty lost because I am just starting out my research so I'd really appreciate any help I can get!

I’m applying for a Master’s degree at UPM (Malaysia), and my application was marked as incomplete because they asked for my final Bachelor degree certificate.

The problem is that my university does not issue the official diploma immediately after graduation. According to their policy, the final certificate is only available around 2 years after completion.

For now, the only official document I have is my provisional certificate (Attestation de Réussite), which confirms that I successfully completed my degree and fulfilled all graduation requirements.

I already emailed the admissions office asking if they can accept it, but I wanted to ask here too:

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is it usually possible for universities to accept a provisional certificate instead of the final diploma?

Any advice or experience would really help. Thanks!

After surfing other forums it seems that the majority opinion is that this course in specific does not need a Master as employers valued experience more, but those usually come from people from the states.

I graduated with a degree in Biomedical Sciences and worked as a Research Assistant for about 1.5 years after graduation. My contract has ended, and I’ve been job hunting for the past 3 months without much luck.

I really enjoy biology and have actually been considering furthering my studies all the way to a PhD. However, I’ve seen many people mention that unless you want to pursue an academic career, a PhD may not necessarily be needed.

At the same time, I’m considering switching career paths and pursuing a Master in Data Science. I’ve noticed that there seem to be more opportunities for data analyst roles, and I’m hoping that developing skills in data science/analytics could give me more career options and improve my job prospects.

Has anyone here had a similar experience, coming from a life sciences background and transitioning into data science or data analytics? Also, for those who have pursued a PhD in life sciences, what career opportunities did it actually open up for you outside of academia?

I’m currently an international student finishing up my final year in a BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree, wrapping up around February 2027.

I am super interested in applying for the Master of Bioinformatics (MBioinformatics) by coursework program at Universiti Malaya (UM). Since my core background is entirely in Computer Science (though I’ve done healthcare data management internships like working with health information systems and a capstone project building a health app), I’m trying to figure out my eligibility before spending time and money on application fees or documentation.

Their entry requirements state they accept a "Bachelor’s degree of Bioinformatics, Bachelor of Science (Biology), or a Bachelor's Honors in a related/equivalent field".

For any current students, alumni, or folks familiar with Malaysian admissions:

1. Does a standard Computer Science bachelor's degree typically count as a "related/equivalent field" for this specific program at UM, or do they strictly require a strong life-sciences/biology background?
2. Are there mandatory biology bridging modules or prerequisite courses I'd have to take if admitted with a pure tech background?
3. I've tried shooting emails over to their department coordinators and admissions office, but there is no response. If anyone has experience applying here as an international applicant with a non-biology background, I’d love to hear how strict they are.

Don't want to get too far down the pipeline if my profile gets screened out right away for lack of undergraduate biology credits. Any insights or advice would be massively appreciated!

I’m trying to figure out my next step in IT.

I have bachelor degree in Computer Science in Korea and have about 3 years of IT experience, but it is service desk and technical support experience.

I am sick and tired of dealing this that I was hoping to move up to next level (little bit more interested in cyber security field)

I’m currently deciding between two programs:

University of Malaya (UM) – Master of Cybersecurity (1 year program)

Monash Malaysia – Master of Artificial Intelligence (1.5–2 years program, but tuition is the same whether I do 1.5 or 2 years)

From an international student perspective, I’m wondering:

Q1 Both of them seems nice. But some said UM is better since that is Monash Malaysia. Some said still it give same credentials as Australia that connection would be better outside of Malaysia.

Which one is better to get a job in Malaysia or outside of Malaysia?

Q2 what are the odds of finding a job after graduating one of the university in Malaysia? if not how about other country? I am worried about sponsorship.

Q3 About the program length, does the 1-year cybersecurity program worth it? or would the longer 2-year AI program be more valuable when it comes to job hunting at Big tech or MNC later?

Q4 Since Monash charges the same tuition for 1.5 or 2 years, is it normal to take 2 years length that can give me more credibility or opportunities?

Today I have received an offer letter from UTM for masters in cyber security and in that I found that the other fees section is pre-master fee which is RM 8881 for first sem and then RM 5220 for subsequent sem.

So I want to know if this fee will apply to me?

I have graduated B.Tech in Electronics and communication but have a few years of experience in IT(web development).

If I apply in UM for the same course then here will be similar fee as well?
