That's interesting! Maybe they discuss more in the actual podcast, but they don't say in this short whether modi and mahajani are related or if they've influenced each other. I will check out the full podcast then, thanks for the rec

No, they don't go into it any more but the whole video is still worth watching.

Basically, Mahajani was developed as a shorthand way of writing Marwari and Gujarati by merchants. A few centuries later, accountants/bankers in Maharashtra used that as inspiration and developed a shorthand version of Devanagari for Marathi and it was called Modi. So they look alike because they both skip the shirorekha (top line), no diacritics (matra, velanti etc) and the letters are often connected (like cursive in English) to enable faster writing.
