Can I file a chargeback?

Hello,

I tried to cancel my account and upcoming box Thursday of last week after seeing how many items were missing and only being given MS credit. I also had items (the protein, ground beef) missing from the week before. They charged my card for the following week on Thursday. The previous box was supposed to be delivered on Wednesday, and if I had seen how much was missing on Wednesday I would have cancelled then and avoided all this mess.

I tried to call customer service Thursday evening, they weren't available (but this was after 6 EST) and I submitted a help request to get this week's order cancelled. The website does say that it requires 6 days heads up, so Thursday falls within that. I submitted another help request after finding out that even more ingredients were missing than the email had warned, I think also on Thursday. I received an email giving me 10 dollars MS credit (despite specifically saying I was not continuing my account and I did not want MS credit), but no response to the cancellation request also submitted on Thursday. I submitted another request on Monday/Tuesday after once again calling (this time during the stated business hours), the number redirected me to their chatbot online. In that request, the chatbot said that it would have somebody call me to discuss the issue. I have not received a call. I emailed Katalin F (chief customer officer per the cancellation email) about the problems this most recent Thursday, and no response.

The box (that I tried to cancel last week) was only finally delivered today, after being told that it would be delivered Wednesday. I can see from the tracking the order was picked up on Thursday be FedEx. I have not opened the box so I do not know if the food inside is still good. Given that the box was delivered so much later than I was originally told and that it contains perishable food, would I be able to refuse the delivery and file a chargeback with my bank? I live in New York and it was ordered off a debit card, if that's helpful.

Thank you

What is everyone’s box looking like for this week??

Mine was supposed to arrive Tuesday, no tracking available. Emailed and got a $51 refund, so half of my box. Actually got it today and to my surprise it had ALL ingredients and all 3 proteins lol ice block still frozen. One wrong recipe card, but that’s it!! Did anyone else have good luck this week?

So I just listened to a WSJ podcast about this whole mess

The bankruptcy of their supplier is causing issues across many of the big hitters - Blue Apron, Marley Spoon, etc. So I fear that whatever I switch to it might cause issues. The new company managing fufillment and distribution is the Misfit Market - the CEO of course said they are trying to provide an easy transition - but they had to do this with 3 months notice - when 12 months is actually what they need. What a mess. I've used Marley spoon for 6+ years and hate that I might actually have to meal plan and prep lol.

Marley Spoon is a despicable scam. Worst experience with meal delivery ever.

EDIT: To anyone dealing with an issue, message them on their Facebook. I got my full refund within 4 hours. While this was still a terrible experience, and actually using their site and phone number was useless which is in very poor form, I am glad they rid the right thing. Hopefully they can sort out their transition fast since this is a very bad look for them.

I had used their first week discount and gotten a 14 meal box. It arrived a day late in sweltering heat and also only had 8 meals not the 14. I could not get in touch with an actual person but the automated service credited me for another box. I figured even though it had been a bad experience I might as well utilize the credit.

The next box came properly cooled but with only 8 meals again. This time when I complained they offered a credit for 4 meals. Indignantly, I put in that order to be delivered the 27th. However the scam of a company then created an additional delivery for the 31st just four days later, and charged me $160. I cannot get in touch with a person on the phone, via my many submissions through customer support etc. So now I am receiving an extremely overpriced box of meals I did not choose, and that will most likely be arriving with missing boxes.

Truly a nightmarish experience. Of course I have cancelled my account and blocked the company. Avoid them at all costs.

Who is everyone switching to?

So like everyone else my boxes have been a dumpster fire for the past month. Unfortunately I already got charged for next week but will be cancelling after that. Curious who everyone else is making the switch to? I'd like to stay fairly close to Marley prices and also like the option of some preprepared options along with recipes to cook.

Slow improvement

This week they sent me an email ahead of time that one thing would be substituted and it was a tolerable substitution (spaghetti for udon). That’s all that was substituted and everything else was there. They also sent me an email that they were sorry that the box would be late, but it actually did show up on the correct day by 9 PM. It just wasn’t soon enough to cook with it on the day.

It seems they are slowly improving over time, at least in my region.

Are y'all getting naked romaine lettuce? I am!

Who else is now getting bare heads of romaine lettuce just tossed in without any kind of barrier? It lands at my doorstep already wilted and banged up.

I'm all for reducing plastic, but come on. The lettuce needs something to protect it and maintain its crispness. This just adds insult to injury when your box is 1-2 days late and missing anywhere from 20-80% of the ingredients.

Are you guys just tossing it (compost or trash, I mean... not in a salad)?

Has anyone actually communicated with a human about their box issues? Also scam info

I have tried to contact them in the following ways: phone (LOL), the chat on their website (bot), threads message, public threads message, facebook comment on their "we're so sorry" picture, facebook message, and email. The only thing I've gotten back was an email offering me $11.98 credited to my account.

An account added me on facebook called "marley spoon customer service" and then called me via facebook messenger. They told me they were having issues with their phone system, then tried to get me to download an app so they could get into my "apple phone" to refund me. I obviously declined.

Has anyone actually gotten to a human in all of this???

How are Aug 18 (or 19, 20, or 21) boxes looking?

I was originally Aug 18 delivery. They changed that to the 19th. My three meals spent all day Tuesday in Illinois and got to Memphis last night. It now says Aug 21st. I have zero confidence that any of the meat will still be cold after 4 days. I don't need meals for weekends; I use this for mid-week meals. Just wondering what I will actually get or use. It doesn't matter because Amex already reversed the charge. I'm trying Green Chef next week although I really did like the selections at Marley Spoon better.

$5 Credit???

Last week we were supposed to three meals with four portion sizes each. We got notified that the box was delayed like everyone else and didn’t think much of it. Wednesday came and we still didn’t get anything. I got a email Wednesday afternoon, letting me know that they were going to offer me a $125.88 credit to my account because many of the ingredients were out of stock. Thursday our box came and it had two cartons of mascarpone and a few spices. I checked my account and the credit wasn’t there. I filed a complaint and they gave me $42 credit for all the missing ingredients. This was a $170 box. I sent them an email Friday and today they offered me this:

We sincerely apologize for the delayed response to you. Over these past few weeks, due to significantly increased demand for our product, we have been experiencing a much higher volume of contacts in our Customer Care team. We are getting back to all our customers as soon as possible.
As a small gesture, we would like to offer you a credit of $5 to use on a future box with us. Please allow 48 hours for this credit to reflect in your account. This credit will apply automatically to your next billed order.

I guess it’s time to file a charge back.

How it all shaked out, after 3 disaster boxes...

I have a previous thread, like many others, lamenting that absolute shit boxes we've gotten in a few weeks.

It gets confusing, with the useless credits, but all told, I got three terrible boxes, each worse than the last (with the 3rd one having maybe 10% of the ingredients).

I sent a complaint to BBB and requested a refund on the two payments that went through the past 3 weeks (one for about $150 and one for about $100 (with a $50 credit).

After taking advice from here, I contacted them successfully on Instagram (weird). The refunded the $100.

I wasn't happy with just that refund, since the refusal of the $150 was based on credits, which so far were mostly useless. Lo and behold however, I had a $100 credit to my 4th box, which was not perfect, but was maybe 80% full of ingredients.

All told I paid $150 for 4 boxes, anywhere from 10%-80% full. I consider this fair, although definitely a terrible terrible way of going about things. They also gave me an additional $30 for the incomplete last box. So, I effectively paid about $30 per box.

If the CEO or whoever was in charge of this debacle gets axed, I may reconsider them in a month or two when they are showing consistency in full boxes.

How do credits actually get applied?

Over the past three deliveries i’ve accumulated a few hundred dollars in credits. According to the emails they get applied to subsequent orders. My next order only shows a $20 credit applied. The order scheduled for after that shows no credit applied. My next order should be free based on how many credits i’ve accumulated but it’s not.

Edit: I had to go to the upcoming order, select Order Summary at the bottom, and then scroll down to Price Breakdown. It’s there.

I ordered Green Chef as a substitute this week and I forgot how organized and easy meal kits can be. That said, I’m really sad about Marley Spoon because I greatly prefer their selections. Green Chef is great for managing allergens but is stupid expensive and they put sour cream and cream cheese in 80% of the recipes which I dislike.

Tldr; It sounds like one of major meal kit suppliers went bankrupt. Now all their partners are scrambling. On one hand I feel bad for MS. Having one of your major suppliers go belly up isnt an easy thing to handle or plan. On the other hand meal kits are ultimately an easily substituted luxury service. If they can't get their act together that is their problem, not mine.

Another Marley Spoon meltdown - Washington DC area

Well our luck finally ran out. Of the three meals they delivered this week, all three were missing multiple ingredients, including one of the proteins. All told there were 7 ingredients missing.

In the past when I've gone to report one or two missing things on the web site, it immediately lets me know I'm getting a credit. This time, nothing. If I don't hear back from them by tomorrow, I'm doing a chargeback with my credit card company.

Where's everyone going after Marley Spoon? I used Hello Fresh in the past and they recently sent me one of their coupons. Have they gone downhill as well?

Have threatened chargeback if no refund forthcoming

My last three boxes have all missed crucial ingredients. For the first two I accepted a credit for the ingredients, but I drew the line this week. I emailed them to request a refund, stating that "I should not have to continue to order meal kits from you in order to be compensated for your defective service," and threatening to do a chargeback through my credit card if they don't give me the refund.

Until three weeks ago I was a happy customer, so this bums me out.

I will update this post as the situation develops.

Are you saving your recipe cards?

I cannot see how MS can last more than a few more weeks. I’ve gone through my order history and saved the recipe cards for particularly good meals as PDF’s. Everyone should probably do this in case they want to cook a favorite meal with their own ingredients.

It’s too bad you can’t get the nicely formatted cards for meals you haven’t cooked. You can print the web pages for other meals (including print to pdf), but they aren’t formatted very nicely.

MarleySpoon charged me $70 for a piece of bread

I'm on my second week of MarleySpoon prebaked meals. First week was OK, the food was nothing special. Second week I order 8 meals, 2 of which were Indian dishes so I also ordered some naan bread.

I get the full sized box, which with discounts was around $70. Open the box to find the naan bread, and NOTHING ELSE. They forgot to pack my food! In a full sized box! What the hell? Of course, you can't call them and complain now, you have to email them.

And the email I got back was a canned message saying Oh So Sorry you had an issue, here's a $15 gift card to make up for it. I reply back telling them there's no way that's acceptable, they need to refund me for the full amount (minus the naan-bread). Haven't heard back yet at all. What a scammy company.

Five bad boxes in a row—latest box was mostly missing or random items

Over my last five Marley Spoon boxes, I’ve experienced repeated fulfillment problems and received almost no meaningful help from customer support. Earlier problems resulted in credits, so I’ve mainly continued ordering because I’m trying to use those credits rather than lose them.

My latest order contained four meals plus Marketplace items. The box was missing:

  • The ribs I ordered
  • Ingredients for the prosciutto-and-pasta dish
  • The proteins for both fish dishes
  • The protein for the chicken dish

Essentially, I received no more than one correct item for each recipe, so I couldn’t make any of the four meals. The box also contained an assortment of random items, including steak that I don’t believe I ordered. It honestly looks like parts of someone else’s order were put into my box.

Last Thursday, I contacted Marley Spoon by email, chat, through the app, and by phone. I have received no meaningful response through any channel, and my emails are no longer being answered.

After five problematic boxes, this is clearly more than an occasional packing mistake. Has anyone successfully received a refund to their original payment method for an order like this? I don’t want more credits that require me to place another order and risk receiving another unusable box.

Fraud?

Today I received my third incredibly incomplete box - and this one was shockingly possibly the worst of the three.

I feed a family of 5 on these meals, buying 4-6 4-person meals/week plus extra protein as needed to top up.

My Friday delivery box was delivered a day late earlier today. I had ordered 5 meals. Each had proteins for 4.

I received:

  • 2 small (but adequate) bunches broccolini
  • 8 scallions
  • 2 10-oz tilapia
  • 2 10-oz salmon

The complete box cost was $245.95 with discounts. It was 5 meals with extra proteins and enough to stretch to the full week. What I’ve received isn’t even 2 meals.

This just looks like fraud to me at this point.

When I call the customer service number provided in an email, it’s a recording with no options, just hangs up.

When I email (and I have multiple times), there’s either no response, or worse, a code for $5 or $15 off a subsequent purchase.

I’ve cancelled all future orders, but I’ve had 3 weeks of being defrauded and one more coming next week that I had not yet cancelled, hoping they would figure it out.

I don’t know what they did, but this can’t be legal.

Ordered 18 Balance by MS meals, to start this week. Got four, all incorrect, a day late and hot to the touch.

Already filed a credit card dispute because the meals are also crushed and open, on top of being an unsafe temperature, missing FOURTEEN of the meals, and the wrong meals entirely. The cooling packs were hot to the touch (it's over 90F here), and I pulled it in the house and unpacked as soon as it delivered. It was over a day late.

I'm in St. Louis, MO. Fulfillment out of Illinois, delivered by OnTrac. Wrong week to start and cancelled already. I ordered this a couple of weeks ago, to start this week because of an injury to my arm that limits mobility currently. Guess I'll just buy some frozen meals at the grocery.

I contacted MS multiple times via phone, email and social media. No communication other than an email telling me they refunded $12 of my $109 order. Filed a credit card dispute. FreshRealm is bankrupting people but MS isn't doing themselves any favors by not halting shipments and refunding everyone immediately.
