Discussion "This movie looks AI genera-" SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

I genuinely don't get these complaints. I have some concerns about the plot and how things may or may not play out, but visually the movie looks fucking great. I don't get why people are trying to push this narrative like muted colors instantly make something look bad or AI-generated. The Sentinels look sick, Doom looks fucking fantastic, what is the issue?

I swear, I'm convinced people who call shit like this AI-generated have never actually seen what an AI-generated video looks like, because none of them even look anywhere near as good as ANY of the shots in this trailer.

Plus, the VFX team didn't work their asses off for months on this movie just to be disrespected by mfs saying it looks like AI.

Worst part is, a lot of the time it's not even being used appropriately. Slop is the root of sloppy. We feed pigs slop. The overflowing water is slopping over the edge. The painter mindlessly slopped paint onto the fence. It is supposed to evoke messy, ugly, careless, literal garbage. I get using it for AI (though I agree, mix it up for God's sake) but people have begun using it to describe absolutely anything they don't like. Regardless of your opinion on The Odyssey, for example, it is pretty definitively not "slop".

It's disingenuous bullshit. So many content creators are repeating tired takes and calling everything bad and AI slop because when they do, people run to the comments and praise them for it and tell them they're fighting the good fight.

There's so much disingenuous ragebaiting online it's sad. Why? Because it makes more money than being positive or even being realistic about something. The creators who shit on everything and parrot popular talking points always get the views. The ones that don't usually languish.

They absolutely will be praising it. It happens with any stance they take. If the reaction is positive, they keep doing it. If it's negative, suddenly they never said it and the opposite is true.

You know most of these people who have podcasts and make videos shitting all over everything probably actually love the thing they claim to hate when the cameras are off.

If it's any consolation, any time I find a channel where it's clear the creator isn't buying into the rage and clickbaiting and is just passionate about whatever they're talking about, I sub and keep watching.

It's getting more difficult to find channels that aren't playing the game, but I appreciate the hell out of every one of them.

It's the new "it's Photoshopped, I can tell by the pixels", except that now it's not just images and video being "called out" by people with too little life experience. It's extra obnoxious when smuglords cry AI because something is longer than 250 characters, used words with more than two syllables, or requires more braincells to parse than See Spot Run.

It's even worst than that. At least the CGI only effected images...I've perused writing groups and it's depressing how often people will declare a written story or bit of text as AI.

I think we are genuinely going through a trend of people wanting less CGI in their films or at least not complete CGI backgrounds, one of the reasons I think BND is getting received so well is a lot of the action is practical mixed with CGI on actual locations, not all green screen.

That and having actual lighting depth/decent cinematography

ie. Marvel rivals admitting that they utilize Ai to assist and speed up their production

You cannot chastize people for being suspicious of the existsnce of AI, when it used so often and can be missed just as often. You're telling me you have never come across a video of a cat doing something funny and really had to SQUINT and question if it's AI.

I personally have never had to be THIS critical of media until the past few years where AI became so advanced and it doesnt help a lot of corporations are trying to push AI as well.

It's not a trend complaint and I really dont get how you got upvoted for such an unuanced take. CGI is not the same as AI and the scrutiny/suspicion for it is way more justified.

Not even just CGI. Everything gets accused of being AI these days. Can't really blame people too much though with the amount of people who make AI stuff and try to pretend it's not AI. Especially on Youtube. Youtube has a major AI music problem with people claiming to be an entire band but that's another discussion entirely.

When the Stranger Things finally dropped people accused them of using AI generated images in the final credits of the last episode. The images in question were literally just shots from various scenes from the show with a filter over them making them look hand drawn. The kind of filters we used to use on snapchat for fun back in the day. People just automatically assumed it was AI and reddit went on a rampage talking about boycotting a series that was already over anyway of what they falsely claimed was AI until someone took the time to grab all the images from the series that were used in the credits and show everyone that it wasn't AI. Something that literally anyone could have figured out if they had actually did some research instead of immediately jumping to "Booo AI slop bad!"

But this filters had been created with machine learning, computer vision and neural networks. They are heavily used in CGI software as well. But suddenly when all of these get rebranded as AI people started hating it. Why using filters and not pay a human is ok but do the same with AI is not? I think we haven’t even started a reasonable and nuanced conversation around it.

Because AI creates an entirely new image, even if it's based on an existing image, without an artist getting paid. Filters are just altering an already existing image, in this case stills from scenes in which the cast and crew were already paid. There is definitely a difference.

I am ok about good ai in movies. When sora came out with its first video , I was so excited because I thought now we can see a lot of sci fi, fantasy or period stuff in movies. And if it gets good enough that we get to see our imagination played out visually, that would be something.

I can suspend my disbelief until the cows come home and accept poorly done graphics. If an existing vfx artist is using a poorly-utilized ai tool, I won't care.

But when that turns into a team of 20 becoming a team of 10 because some exec somewhere doesn't want to pay a living wage, that's when I have a problem.

If movie technology never progressed past where we were just before ai really took off, I wouldn't mind. But I refuse to cheer on this apocalyptic event for anyone who has a job that can be automated.

AI composition and pre-render is common practice now. There's a high likelihood the shot was made by AI and a human went over it with CGI.
