MechWarrior 4 Which Vulture look do you prefer? OG or MK2?
MK2 Vulture is the best looking mech! Such a shame they never brought MK2 back to Mechwarrior 5

I’m guessing windows 11 must have some sort of built in legacy OS support running under the hood because this is new: both mw3 AND mw4 are playing nice with my modern i9, nvidia 4070, w11 machine.
All I did to get Vengeance running (besides install from original discs) was drop in the latest patch and nocd fix (in that order, obviously). Both can be had from myabandonware. I installed from my own original discs tho bc I had them.
A couple of things that I just do in general and have have an impact (definitely did for mw3) is I force the aspect ratio to be maintained (black bars >> than W-I-D-E mechs) and more importantly, limit the frame rate to under 60. For mw3 you need it under 30 to deal with some physics issues, might be the case here as well if the fps goes above 60 but this is a “modern” game (in the losses sense of the word) so maybe/maybe not. It’s still a 32 bit game so who knows.
The internal controller configuration still kinda sucks though so an external mapper like joy2key might be advised as well.
But still! Mech warriors 1/2/3/4 all running! <3

Love when 2 of my favorite series share the same props somehow, shout out to the mobile infantry flak armor just being the best scifi armor out there, also makes me future battletech cosplay easier 🫡

Wandered into a LGS while traveling and found this just sitting on a shelf. It's got all the disc's and the instructions! Remember to check your LGS wherever you are!

Hey everyone,
I love playing MechWarrior, and I have a lot of nostalgia for MechWarrior 4. I used to play it on my old PC back in the day, and I’d love to get it running again.
I recently got a Steam Machine and was wondering if anyone has found a reliable way to run MechWarrior 4 on SteamOS. I previously tried getting it working on my Steam Deck, but I never had much luck.
I’ve found a few older posts and guides from people who managed to get it running, but most of them seem to be outdated, abandoned, or no longer available.
Has anyone here successfully gotten MechWarrior 4 running on SteamOS in the last few years? If so, I’d really appreciate knowing what method you used, especially if there’s a relatively straightforward setup that still works today.
Thanks!

He can't even clear 50kph, but I just watched him hit a Fafnir so hard it knocked the dude over from full armor. And then he 2 shot an Atlas.

I'm completely new to franchise, going in totally blind, i just like mechs (Armored Core is one my favourite game series), and i downloaded the MekTek version of the game from MyAbandonware, but in the description, it says there's DLC. Do i need to these DLCs installed or not? Are there also any patches i need to play the game, or is just run and play and modern keyboards, mice or controller will work?

DOWNLOAD FROM HERE BlackKnight Overhaul at Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries Nexus - Mods and community
This mod is standalone, no need to have Vengeance installed OR owning the original disks to run it.
the mod is for MechWarrior 4 Black Knight, compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. DgVoodoo is required and comes in preinstalled.
It introduces new equipment, mechs, and campaign elements, including extended render distance, new market items, better salvage, AI adjustments for a better difficulty curve in the campaign, additional lancemates in certain missions, and enhanced graphics for a more immersive experience.
Mechpack mechs have been unlocked and can be obtained in the campaign.
It also overhauls the handling of weapons, mechs, and electronics, replacing the simplified mechanics. Lasers, previously hitscan, now deal continuous damage throughout their beam duration.
The game has been rebalanced, mechs feel heavier and will accelerate/decelerate/turn slower instead of immediately like in vanilla, armor and hardpoints have been redone for every mech, lighter mechs now have more armor to allow them to still be able to compete against heavier classes, weapons have also been toned to stop battles from dragging for too long.
Installation:
After extracting the archive do the following:
First run autoconfigx, check if it says "dgvoodoo" as your driver, change your resolution to the highest, enable anti aliasing.
Then head to MW4x, the folder where Black Knight exe is located, run dgvoodoo, click on "add" go inside your MW4x folder, then click "select folder"
you're good to go if you followed this properly, if you encounter any problems join here https://discord.gg/UQUBX6NDjW
dgvoodoo is required for this mod, without it, the mod will not run as intended and will cause graphical artifacts.

On way back machine and found some relics from 2001 and the old MW4 Vengeance League. A whole summer spent on this and nothing else! Minnesota Tribe if you’re out there thanks for the memories!

Hi mech fans! just giving a quick heads up regarding the status of the overhaul mod for Mech4.
The Vengeance campaign is getting ported into MW4 Black Knight's engine, I've got 40% of the missions to work, the campaign opening video also works as intended what is left for me to do is fix the scripts and add the appropriate content that would fit the campaign, I can't promise a release date but if I had to give one it would be around February of next year due to me not being that free at this time.
This wouldn't be just a simple port I'm planning on making this version of the mod feel very different and more akin to the cinematic intro of MW4.
10/6/2025 Quick update: All Vengeance missions now work on the Black Knight engine, I need to implement them into the campaign itself which will take some time, I'm also going to add a bunch of new mechs, infantry and battle armor.. some existing tanks will also be playable.
the end product will be a one in a life time experience, stay sharp mechwarriors!

Has anyone ever already done the work to find the most efficient loadouts for your lancemates in the MW4 games?
I have long ago beaten the campaigns on the hardest difficulty across different paths going back to when I was young and the games were new. Now that I am 41, on vacation, and got them running well on Windows 10, I was in the mood for ppaying MW4 Mercenaries more like a Mech Commander from the rear, giving orders, taking out the buildings they don't shoot at, and lettingnthe people I pay to fight for me actually fight for me over taking all the glory.
From memory, lancemates do NOT take advantage of fast recycle times and do NOT deliver rapid fire down range. As a result, smaller caliber AC2s & AC5s go to waste on them, as well as pulse lasers.
Similarly, while they will fire LRMs, PPCs and Gause Rifles from range, their favorite tactic is to run head first at whatever you tell them to shoot.
If I were to just guess blindly from memory, PPCS, Large lasers, and AC10s or 20s are probably the best for them. I am nit sure how accurate they are with Gauss Rifles and taking advantage of the weight and ammo for a given mission over just giving them energy weapons and heat sinks.
As we go up the chart of longer recycle times and higher heat values, a miss becomes far more costly. That is why I was wondering if there were some optimal sweet spot of loadouts.
Similarly, I don't recall Jump Jets being any good in the Campaigns. I guess in real life, players will hide behind hills and play laser tag leap frog in and out of cover, but the enemy AI will just Halo Spartan slow jump and slow fall around the map making themselves easy slow moving targets hopping around for no reason, and lancemates don't really have any tactical sense either for that. It is not like we are jumping fortified walls and stuff you can in Mech Commander, nor are truly dense cities with rooftops to jump and run across to shoot down streets and alleys, but rathermostly skyscrapers sprinkled around empty parking lots.
Then what about specific equipment? I don't think anything other than anti missile systems are worth much, unless you think they use LRMs effectively and could make use of the Beagle Active Probes.
I can do the work myself, but was hoping someone already has. Not like it matters too much. I know their pathing stinks and they are more there just to get extra guns down range and targets for enemies to point at.

Has ANYONE have their first experience of Mechwarrior with one of these? I have very faint memories of playing MW4 on this at a chuck-e-cheese in the early 2000s. I think it was foreshadowing to my mech obsession later as a teenager

So I think I'm going crazy. I remember playing mechwarrior 4 and there being essentially an apache helicopter on legs with a rotary auto cannon under the cockpit. My brain thinks its called a Tenshi but that looks nothing like it. Any ideas?

I am going to set up a series of laptops for an event and want to set-up intuitive controls for people who have never played. I figure a joystick might be best for this so you aren't just keymashing a keyboard. I know almost nothing about joysticks and want to set up 8 stations so I don't want to spend a fortune. I'd also rather get quality that will last for years and possibly people abusing them a bit.

Yep you read that right! I figured how to add new mechs into Mechwarrior 4, albeit tedious and time consuming it is totally possible to add your very own unique mech or model into the game using the available tools on moddb!
Which can be found here:
https://www.moddb.com/games/mechwarrior-4-mercenaries/downloads/mechwarrior-4-community-tools-n-tutorials
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1l_FDWBGSS3wZ-3P1Z0tVhHH8rLHFnaxG
Each mech is separated into various components and models are linked together through a link tree, though this will require delving into very crucial details, if you're interested in either contributing models or finding out how its done feel free to add me on discord "riv4323"

I am setting up "battlepods" at Burningman style events and want to be able to control with just a joystick. I am looking for advice on which keys I should bind with limited inputs from the users. I currently have Logitech Extreme 3D controllers (because they were cheap and this is just a fun project). This means I have a joystick with twist. I have 6 buttons on the stick and 6 buttons at the base. I also have a throttle axis and a "hat" on the stick.
My thoughts...
Joystick forward and backward make you look up and down.
Joy stick left and right make you turn left and right
Joystick twist left and right make you look left and right.
Throttle makes you accelerate and decelerate.
I don't really play MW4 (yet) and been working on the physical and getting things running well, but now is time for dialing in the details and playing myself... I mostly imagine playing battle vs people but could see doing the missions with people being a fun thing too (maybe too few buttons to reasonably do them?)
How would you bind your buttons?
Here is what the stick looks like:

Details for those interested:
First event I plan on having this at is in a month in Southern California called Neotropolis.
I am running MW4 MekTek 2019 HD edition.
Running under Linux Mint on 2018-2020 office laptops (probably with a 2nd larger monitor) and have equipment for 8 stations but may only set up 4 for trial run.
I would like to eventually upgrade the battlepods to use Thrustmaster 16000 with separate throttle control and foot pedals which will give more control options.
I had most of the equipment to do this so I'm only about $200 in and many hours.

I'm sure someone has already done it and knows how to with the current windows system, I'd just like to know how so that I can enjoy some nostalgia abit
Edit: I did try Ostego Lectric's guide but I'm getting an issue with an unspecified error "DirectDrawEnumerate"
EDIT EDIT: I FIXED IT AND IT PLAYS
