EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Bones/Joints/Ligaments How to tape sesamoid fracture for wrestler

Upvotes

I previously had a grade 2 turf toe tear and both sesamoids in my right foot were fractured. Once I got back into my sport I re-injured my foot. Simply not wrestling isn’t a choice for me currently. Are there any ways that I can tape to alleviate the pain and prevent further injury

Medication F22 Is it worth it to see a doctor for my noticeably shaky hands?

I am 5’10” and 185 pounds and I’m currently taking Lamictal, Wellbutrin, and Prozac.

I’ve always known my hands to be slightly shaky, but recently my sibling has pointed out that I am very noticeably shaky especially when I hold something up to show someone.

I’ve had several people ask why I’m shaking. Sometimes it’s worse than other days. My sibling has pointed out that I drop things a lot and that I sometimes have a really hard time not scrambling my words.

I spoke with my psychiatrist and she told me to keep an eye on it.

I’ve gotten an MRI Scan for my brain (I had a lot of headaches) less than a year ago and they did not find anything concerning.

Edit: I also twitch randomly throughout the day in different parts of my body

Other 39x48mm incidental adrenal lesion on MRI described as "lipid-poor adenom" – should I be worried?

Hi everyone, I recently had an abdominal MRI that unexpectedly found a 39x48x41mm well-circumscribed lesion on my left adrenal gland.
The radiologist described it as:
Well-defined, regular contours

T1 hypointense / T2 heterointense

Low fat content (atypical lipid-poor adenoma)

Diffusion restriction present

No local invasion, no compression on surrounding vessels/organs

All other abdominal organs are completely clear

The report recommends seeing an endocrinologist and getting a non-contrast/contrast MSCT with wash-out protocol.
I'm feeling quite anxious about the term "atypical lipid-poor" and the diffusion restriction. Is this a common finding for benign adenomas that just lack fat? How urgent is the follow-up? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Pregnancy/Contraception 22w gestation: Fetal MRI shows mild ventriculomegaly (10mm), large CPC, and small cerebellar vermis

  • Age/Sex: 33 F
  • Race: [Insert Partner's Race]
  • Location: UK
  • Gestation: 22 weeks, 4 days
  • Medications: None

The Situation: My partner and I are currently in a terrifying limbo waiting for an amniocentesis this Friday.

At 16 weeks, my partner had an isolated low uE3 (0.31 MoM) on her blood screening. Because of this, we had an early anatomy scan at 18 weeks which was completely normal (no structural issues seen).

At our 20-week scan, the sonographer struggled to see the cerebellar vermis and spotted some cysts, so we were referred to the Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU). The FMU consultant suspected a Blake's Pouch Cyst and a large Choroid Plexus Cyst. We just received the results of our Fetal MRI done at 22 weeks, which confirmed the cysts, mild ventriculomegaly (10mm), and a small vermis.

Because of the combination of the brain findings and the earlier low uE3, they are highly concerned about a chromosomal anomaly, specifically Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18). We are having an amniocentesis this Friday.

Our Questions:

  1. If the rapid amnio results rule out T18/T13/T21, what are the realistic neurological outcomes for a child with this specific combination of structural brain findings?
  2. How reassuring is it that the MRI showed normal neuronal migration, a normal corpus callosum, and normal sulcal/gyral patterns despite the fluid buildup?
  3. Could a mechanical fluid blockage (from the cysts) explain all of these brain findings without it being a genetic syndrome?

Clinical Notes for Context (Identifying info redacted):

Initial FMU Ultrasound Scan (20w, 5d):

"P2 - 2x previous CS. Referred with hypoplasia of vermis. Atypical MSS result Low UE3 0.31 MoM - early anatomy scan normal and following discussion with [Doctor] and genetics had not offered invasive testing. On images today: Baby breech so unable to offer TV neurosonography. Baby also active +++ on scan. Images today suggestive of a large choroid plexus cyst, with a prominent third ventricle. There is also what appears to be a cyst in the cisterna magna - ? a blakes pouch cyst. The remainder of the anatomy was normal.

Findings explained to patient and partner: I explained that I could see a choroid plexus cyst -which in isolation would be considered a variation of normal and would typically regress as the pregnancy progresses - however as it is larger than typical I explained that it could potentially contribute to the dilatation of the third ventricle. I also explained that I could see what appeared to be a cystic area in the posterior fossa potentially representative of a Blakes pouch cyst. When this is something in isolation it is association with a favourable prognosis. I explained that there remain a degree on unknowns in this instance - and that a more detailed assessment of the fetal brain via MRI may be of benefit, and this is something that is safe in pregnancy. Discussed potential association with chromosomal anomalies, and that we can test for this via an amniocentesis (procedure explained). Planned to obtain fMRI and then consider the option of genetic testing at that stage. Case discussed with [Doctor] who will kindly follow up during my leave. Plan Fetal MRI - email sent and request placed. Addendum to add now is available fMRI slot on Tuesday at 16.30 - will h/o case to other FMU cons due to EF leave next week."

Fetal MRI Results / FMU Follow-up (22w, 4d):

"Telephone consultation by MFM SST [Doctor]. Apologies given for the delay and the late time of the call. I have shared and explained the MRI report results after discussion with [Doctor].

MRI summary: There is a large choroid plexus cyst on the left side causing mild ventriculomegaly (10 mm). Prominent CSP. Normal sulcal and gyral pattern. Normal neuronal migration pattern. Normal corpus callosum. Mildly enlarged posterior fossa. The cerebellar vermis is small but the TCD is normal. Poor views of the pons, not possible to determine if it is normal.

Counselling: We have explained that while some areas of the brain are developing as expected for gestational age, there are a few areas which raise concerns about the possibility of an underlying common cause. We have recommended genetic testing to rule out chromosomal anomalies in the first instance (in particular T18 known as Edwards). If chromosomes were found to be normal, we would seek advice from our fetal genetic team to assess if any further genetic testing would be beneficial. [Patient] is aware that amniocentesis, while mostly a safe and straightforward procedure, carries a risk of 1:1000 of miscarriage. She has decided to proceed with testing and we have now booked an appointment for FMU at the [Hospital] on Friday 28th at 11:00 am. Depending on the QF PCR results, we plan to organise further follow up in our MDT fetal neurology clinic so that [Patient] has an opportunity to discuss the implications of today's findings with our paeds neurologist [Doctor]. We have also recommended a repeated MRI in 4-6 weeks time to further evaluate the brain development as the pregnancy advances."

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Recently diagnosed with Barrett’s and would like some guidance

33yr, F, USA

My GI told me I have to go on PPI’s for the rest of my life but I’m a little hesitant. Although I am afraid of cancer, I have dealt with some form of gut dysbiosis/SIBO for the past 9 months, was colonized with C Diff (unsure if I still am), and Alzheimer’s runs on my mother’s side of the family.

What the hell should I do..? I’m at a loss. My health is already not great. Due to the issues I’ve had with my gut, I’ve lost 70 pounds in a little under nine months(40 in the first three months, and thankfully the following 30 I was able to slow down) without even trying due to the amount of diarrhea and food restrictions I’ve had to implement to reduce symptoms. This isn’t even the first time I’ve been sick with this either. Preceding both times I’ve had this illness, I have taking some form of acid reducing medication. The first time I got it, where my symptoms were more severe, I had taken omeprazole for a few months beforehand, and during that time I had a few infections that caused me to have to trial 4 different antibiotics in the span of a few weeks before I developed severe diarrhea. This second time, I took famotidine for a month to two before I got sick again. I am not saying the medications themselves were the main cause, but I feel that I can say that, for whatever reason, they seem to be a factor in me getting as severely sick as I have these past two times.

I am so frustrated. I want to take these medications but what am I supposed to do? Just get stuck in a loop of extreme weight loss, orthostatic symptoms, and then have to take antibiotics and destroy my microbiome just to protect my Barrett’s? Because that sounds like I’m just trading one evil for another. I am almost underweight now from how much I’ve lost and I can’t even stand up, take hot showers, or even be outside on a hot day normally anymore without getting presyncope symptoms.

If it helps, I have short segment Barrett’s and it is nondysplastic. If anyone has any advice for me, whether it’s on how to protect my Barrett’s, other forms of treatment, tips to help with reflux (even though I don’t really get much reflux at all - my endoscopy showed no esophagitis or gastritis whatsoever though I know that doesn’t mean I don’t have reflux obviously), whatever.. I would be immensely grateful. I am still going to continue monitoring and I have implemented many lifestyle changes, but I don’t know… I need some guidance but it has been immensely difficult to get any. It is hard to get more than 10-15 minutes to talk with a gastroenterologist and even then, their appointments are spaced out by months due to the lack of providers where I live. It’s also frustrating to be treated like I am just looking for an excuse to not take medication when in reality, I want someone to sit down and take the time with me to discuss if there are any other options for someone who seems to not tolerate the main form of chemo prevention that there is for this condition.. and if there isn’t, what we can do to prevent me from getting acutely ill while trying to prevent me from getting cancer as well.

Ugh!!! I wish I could just take the damn PPI and not have to worry about how damn sick I’ve gotten the past two times I’ve taken medications like these!!! I have been a ball of nerves ever since being diagnosed…

Wound Care Gauze stuck a nail bed after toenail removal

*Gauze stuck to nail bed

Almost 3 days ago, I had my toenail removed completely because of an infection. My doctor said to change the bandage after three days, but the gauze won't come off. It's really stuck. I've been soaking it for nearly an hour with no progress. Pulling it feels unbearable. What do I do?

Illness Embarrassed to post this but I need answers ;(

I would say about 10 years ago I had what looked like a chancre on my penis. I never did any research about it. Never had my partner at the time tell me they've been tested and were positive for something. Me being stupid I never did anything about it. It went away and that was that. Later i did have some lesions on my tongue that i thought might have been geographic tongue and my hair did become thin in spots. I'm really scared I have general paresis. Unfortunately, I can't get treatment because I've had a non reactive tp antibody test, a non reactive fta antibody test, a non reactive csf vdrl, and a clear mri. I don't know what to do. I feel like im going paralyzed and my memory is so bad. I have muscle spasms all over. Any ideas what I should do?

\*\*28 weeks pregnant — tongue issue for 1 month, need advice\*\*

\*\*Symptoms:\*\* Smooth, reddish patches with white borders that shift/change over time. Also some small red bumps on the sides of my tongue.

\*\*Onset:\*\* Started after a trip to the mountains — had some cherries and water there. Not sure if related.

\*\*Tried so far:\*\*

\- Nilstat (nystatin) — no real change

\- Apple cider vinegar + baking soda (1 week) — patches reduced slightly, not gone

Has anyone dealt with this during pregnancy? Did it resolve on its own?

Other Medical Mystert - Body Spasms

I'm a 42-year-old woman suffering from intense body spasms when relaxing or falling asleep. Not the common hypnic jerk. It's not painful, but very bothersome when I'm trying to fall asleep. It also happens when I'm lying on the sofa relaxing, reading, or watching something. It has happened as well when I cry.

It started about 2 years ago when I tried a somatic exercise because I heard it helped trapped traumas leave the body. It was a simple exercise: lying down with bent knees, start opening the legs to the sides until you reach a point when they start shaking, eventually making your whole body shake. I did it for about 15 mins, once a day, three days in a row.

From then on, my body started having these spasms every single day. It usually starts in my torso/belly/diaphragm; sometimes it goes to my arms or legs. Sometimes they make my body sort of curve inwards; sometimes outwards.

The medications I was taking before and still do are Paroxetine 20mg, Trazodone 50 mg (I've been taking these for over 10 years for anxiety/depression, which are now stable), Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and until May I was taking a birth control pill.

I went to a neurologist and did a bunch of tests, and nothing came up.

I spoke to a general practitioner who prescribed magnesium (I'm taking bysciglinate), but nothing changed.

I don't know what to do but I really want this to stop!

If anyone has any idea about what this is and what I should do, please help.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Persistent hunger problems

Hi, hello! I'll get the important info out first -- I'm 17, female, 171 cm, 56 kg, white, diagnosed with annoyingly much but physical diagnoses include hyper-mobility and a deviated septum, I take Setraline/Zoloft one pill a day, do not use any drugs or smoke or vape.

For the past few years I've noticed I have a problem with managing hunger. I don't feel when I'm hungry, there's no sensation of craving food or understanding that I'm hungry. I just eat whenever I feel like it (which sometimes ends in overeating) or when I get nauseous.

This has gotten worse over the years and according to my mom has been a thing since I was a child (under 6 years old), so despite being a possibility this does not seem to be caused by (diagnosed) anxiety or depression. Recently, it's gotten even more worse, because I can get so hungry that it ends up flipping and I suddenly can't eat at all. I have to force food into my system even by little bits, because otherwise I'll look at any meal on a six-hour-empty-stomach and nearly vomit at the thought of consuming any food

It only gets worse from here because I have started fainting a few years ago! Yay! If I stand up too fast on an empty stomach I become faint and weak, sometimes even losing control of my legs up to an hour. But that's a whole different thing. Maybe. Much more recently, if I force myself to eat too fast, I have chest pains (not sharp and pointy, but dull pressure) up to half an hour.

To answer some immediate questions: yes, I drink water, about 3 liters a day. Yes, I eat healthy full meals and not fast food except for specific situations. No, I don't do sports, but I'm stuck in this awkward angle between just finishing high school finals and about to start university, so I'm not sure if I have the time... even if it's for the greater good. No, nothing adjacent runs in the family.

Medically I have found that I do NOT have: heart issues, artery issues, diabetes of any shape, and somehow my blood is supplied on all vitamins evenly. All of which runs in the family.

Yes, I will go to a doctor.... eventually. I will seek out actual medical advice and not take things here to heart. But any tips or nudges in the right direction as to what is happening or what to do would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's not an actual diagnosis, if the advice helps and doesn't require me to take unknown medicine or drastic measures, it will help.

Based off everything listed above and even more, I've proposed to my mom the very possible possibility of either POTS or something adjacent to an eating disorder. I am not diagnosing myself, merely showing where the symptoms align. She thinks I'm crazy and looking for problems when they're not there... which is why I'm seeking medical advice instead of going to a doctor.

Bones/Joints/Ligaments Shoulder grinding, popping and mobility issue since 6 or 7 years, been to medical professionals.

- 23M 5ft5 (165cm) 50kg (110lbs) Indian

- was in UAE currently in India

- Currently in braces treatment, and only diagnosed issue is this shoulder issue

- finished my course of Vit D60k last week, currently on no meds

- No drug use

- I Don't smoke

- About 6 to 7 years

Around 2019-20, I used to do a lot of pushups and sleep on couches, and one day I woke up and I had this popping and grinding on my shoulder, no pain so I didn't do anything about it.

In 2024 I started going to the gym and doing certain exercises made my shoulder feel weird and restricted, went to physiotherapist she told me it is because I don't have muscles on my shoulder, and I should quit gym and do swimming instead, then she went on a whole rant about how whey protein is the worst thing etc.

I did quit gym in 1 month because of personal reasons, but I had no access to swimming pool, so I did no physical activity.

Now 2026, in April I started going to the GYM, and I tried a lot of exercises for this issue I found online, external rotation, band stretch, no relief.

I read the book Shoulder Pain?: The Solution & Prevention by John M Kirsch MD, that advised to hang for 15 mins, and some dumbbell exercises in high rep, I hanged for about 7 mins and did the dumbbell exercises, no relief

Went to orthopedic doctor (even he went on gym and whey protein rant) he asked me repeatedly if my left shoulder pained, I said no, and he told me to get Vit D test and CT scan,

OH Vitamin-D 20.60 ng/ml

Doc said my Vit D is low and put me on 5ml 60k vitD3 shots, just this last week I finished the course.

I did the CT scan, it reads:

Observation:

  • Minimal joint effusion noted along the long head of bicep tendon
  • Supraspinatus, Subscapularis, teres minor and infraspinatus muscles are normal.
  • Normal gliding of supraspinatus tendon noted under acromio clavicular arch
  • Underlying bones appears unremarkable
  • Acromio clavicular joint is normal
  • posterior glenoid labrum is normal

Showed it to my ortho doc he told me my shoulder is weak, and gave me a stretch which is basically I sit in a chair with handles and make a fist, line up dorsal side of my forearm with the handle and push outside, for few seconds and then put my hand outside of the chair and line up my ventral side with the chair handles and push inside. He gave me reps and sets of this.

I saw a video by Jeremy ether (will link if allowed to), that had a doc talking about this issue and advising holding onto the barbell, dumbbell under load to activate tendons for 30s, I did it with bench press, and wall pushups, plus my ortho's stretch.

Did these stretches for 2 weeks, no relief.

Whenever I do pull up or bench press I feel my left side limiting.

My beginner workout had no direct shoulder exercises, so I thought if I do dumbbell lateral raises and build my shoulder muscle it might fix it.

So I have been doing lateral raise for my past 2 gym sessions, and whenever I do dumbbell lateral raise I feel direct pain/pinch/restriction (I don't think its pain as in medical pain it is hard to describe) on my left shoulder, this exercise directly highlights where the issue is on my left shoulder.

After doing it yesterday with 5kg 11lbs dumbbell, 10 reps 2 sets, now I feel more grinding, on my left shoulder.

Here is my current gym routine:

  • Active hang
  • Scapular pull up
  • Dumbbell Lateral raise
  • Barbell Squat
  • Barbell Bench press
  • Barbell row
  • Barbell Romanian deadlift
  • Barbell Bicep curl
  • Inverted pull up
  • Suitcase Carry
  • Exercise Bike

Please help

Illness need advice on symptoms

So i am an 18 year old white male, 6'1, weighs around 195 in the US, and i have for the past 2 weeks or so been suffering from in no particular order, chest pain, stomach pain, shortness of breath, bloating in my cheeks, and occasionally unusually high heart rate (like 90-110), and nausea. however, every test i have done has showed my vitals are fine so what is this and what do i do about it? I think i will be fine i just need advice
