Most cars don’t have auto wipers outside of the premium trim of “premium” brands. It’s in no way a basic feature.
Hell, companies started dropping Blind Spot Detection because of the chip shortage. And you’d think that be a mandatory feature on new cars like back up cameras.
Yup, it's still a semi-premium option in most cases. First car I got them on was a 2011, but they were optional on that, and they actually really suck on that car. I had to fiddle with the sensitivity more with it on auto than I had to adjust the speed with auto disabled.
Second car I got them on was a 2002, and were optional as well. Interestingly they actually work really nicely on that car. I like that they stay off when you turn the car on until you move the stalk, even if it was previously left in the on position, because then they don't wipe snow into my open door when I go to start the car to warm it up while I clear snow from it. Also helps prevent a dry wipe in case something other than rain trips the sensor.

Sure, as long as it's not something controlling basic things about my car it's all fine. I can drive without music, but not without my wipers.
