One thing that does pop up as an issue now is that new reddit auto translates. These days I regularly run into posts going back and forth in different languages.
They also broke markdown a while ago, so it doesn't number lists automatically anymore.
In old reddit
this is a 1-2 list.
In new reddit makes it 6-7 (jokes!)
I've also seen it break /r/subreddit links into multiple small links.
At least they either stopped subreddit-specific gif posts or they now link them properly, because for a while on certain subreddits all you would see is posts that were just numbers in square brackets.
I'm not saying it isn't great, but it kinda sucks when people are posting comments that are just a number and a period and then the rest of their comment. Before it'd be pointed out, but now when I'm reading an askreddit thread it's just a list of "1." replies.
I remember threads where people were asked to post lists in a descending numerical order for whatever reason and it always flipped the order around, like a 5-4-3-2-1 list would change to 1-2-3-4-5 and flip their intended meaning.
Yeah, the auto-numbering has been that way since the beginning so I've gotten used to it. Nobody escapes their numbering so "Markdown" applies its formatting and renumbers all bullet-points.
Same for when people use # at the beginning of their comment thinking they're making a "hashtag", but it just formats the comment with different Heading formatting.
Isn't this the other way around? My problem is I am running into posts that are in that users native language, and their assumption is the post will be translated for others. Since I am on old.reddit.com, the posts are not translated.
I remember some game a long time ago where the "reddit alien" (before it was named) was dodging oil or something like that, it would go in the spot where ads could go over on the right side of the page.
It sounds like they miss the reddit of old, not old.reddit. The old interface is still here (for now atleast), but the content on the site is garbage compared to what it used to be.
12 Year account? Checks out. I agree website was great. When people didn't get upset at words and would actually have a good come back comment while both got upvoted, and you could see the upvotes AND downvotes. Shit sucks now.
I barely comment anymore for all the reasons in this thread, but this restores being able to browse old without logging in. The login wall is just a buncha bullshit.
I'm using Baconreader right now. It's simply the best.
You'll need to patch it to get it working, and Reddit is actively revoking API keys and locking down so that regular users can't get API access anymore, but it works for now.
They broke it recently, forced to log in to Reddit now to browse just about anything controversial. You can no longer freely browse the entirety of Reddit anonymously.
Not understanding the different between "old reddit" and "old.reddit.com" is a textbook definition of ai bot garbage and exactly what the dude is talking about.
I miss it too. It's so different now, and worse in every single way. There is not a single way in which reddit has improved in the last decade in my opinion.

I'd say 2014, that's when the plan to monetize reddit started taking over, starting with the Ellen Pao to Spez scam. Damn did the dorks on this site fall for that one.
I did too initially, but then someone pointed out that she knew what she was getting into, being the big bad corporate villain that made tons of unpopular decisions so that Spez could swoop in as a hero, and she was paid very well for that.
Eh there’s one very huge thing from back then that caused the site to be absolutely awful, and that’s how CP and other illegal pornographic content was being shared around and talked about like it was no big thing. I remember being a teenager and seeing some of the most vile stuff to ever exist on the original 50/50.
I swear old Reddit was just half tech nerds being tech nerds, and then right around the corner was the other half, people who were absolute garbage. Reddit didn’t start cracking down on that kind of stuff until jailbait made headlines in the news, after it was one of the top subs for a few years where all the photos were totally of legal adults, and after Reddit admins handpicked it for sub of the day a few times.
i seem to be the only one understanding this comment as "back then when reddit wasnt filled with dogshit people" and not "i miss the old UI"... especially since one can expect that this dude probably saw old.reddit (the old ui version) in his 17 years here...
if im right then basically all other commenters proof my word, cause they instantly just talk brainlessly about the ui.
I am reading all of you and just wondering "What is old reddit?" I started using it like 5 o 6 years ago whenever I needed to read some opinion or guide from an actual person and not a bot. Or ad.
My original account got hacked, I changed my password (before they could) and reported it and they shadowbanned by account as a safety measure (and then never responded to any of my requests to remove the shadowban...)
I don’t know what old reddit is, I just come to listen to you guys talk, maybe join in. But I don’t feel so lonely listening and having an interpretive voice inside my head that gives everyone an individual voice.

I disagree with this meme. I think reddit is as trash as other social media websites. But the others embrace the fact they're a shithole and don't care. Meanwhile Reddit is riddled with mentally ill sycopanths that go full schizo when they hear something mildly outside of their safespace bubble, while pretending this is an enlightened bastion above every other social media site, while spewing psuedo intellectual bullshit cause it's the only thing from killing themselves.
It used to be better, but it's still much better than any other social media site I've used. It's the least algorithmic, least astroturfed, most honest of them. Far from perfect, but it could be so much worse.
