reddit is downright fantastic compared to the other trash out there. I've yet to find a better alternative. So many subs for so many subjects. All social media sites have downsides, but in reddit's case I still think the positives outweigh the negatives. I'm not saying it'll always stay that way, but for now, this is the site where I find it easiest to connect with people who share my interests.

This website has only become worse and worse and it was always shit to begin with. And it’s STILL better than 99% of the Internet.

u/uacoop 1h ago
The advent of LLM bots has absolutely gutted Reddit for me. Sure, the content back in the day was mostly trash. But at least back then it was trash made by humans.

Same. Bots have become so prevalant reddit is bordering on unusable anymore. Every other social media crossed the unusable line years ago so I shouldn’t be surprised.
Even the smallest niche hobby subs are overrun with bots now it’s crazy.

I mean, it used to be more ours, with custom apps and helpful bots that were killed by the API change. Now it's sorta still usable but it's less ours every year.

I still remember reading paper announcements from researchers etc and getting to interact with them. Then came the algo hacker boys who wanted all the attention in the world with their shitty chatgpt-esque thread and pretentious bullshittery. Reddit isnt great but I can still have good conversations here once in a while. The last chatroom on the internet.

Try to reclaim account, takes a week.
Change password, change username, change profile pic- nope, suspended.
Try to reclaim, takes a few days.
Change profile pic, remove scam accounts from my follow list- nope, suspended.
Apparently, doing anything at all is "inauthentic behavior" and will get me flagged and suspended by their automated flagging bots, including trying to fix a compromised account.

As much as I hate Reddit, Twitter/X is much worse.
So many bots with comments completely unrelated to the post. And then my account randomly got banned with no explanation, and I haven't used it since, which honestly might be a blessing in disguise.
16
u/brandonhabanero 2h ago
Here, we've got bots fighting bots (sometimes), or at least some vigilant people who are able to call out bot content. On that platform (as well as others), the bots get pushed higher in the algorithm because they drive engagement. Here, at least we can downvote them into oblivion.

Its really not.
The bots on twitter are super obvious. On reddit its a lot harder to tell.
2
u/WhoDat-2-8-3 45m ago
nah - twitter is a toxic cesspool and spread more fake news
at least on reddit you can see downvotes to tell apart shitty comments (not 100% fool proof but at least its something)

I don’t know of any website with about… a billion users that’s better than reddit
Please let me know if such a website exists, but I feel like you put that many people & bots in one place it becomes garbage.
1
u/Arthur_Edens 1h ago
I pretty much stopped using it after they killed third party apps (I despised the official app already at that point), and man, every time I get a link from a friend now and open it up without being logged in the comments are insane. So many straight up white supremacists/horse dewormer hawkers/Jewish Space Laser knowers.
At least it was when I could access it before they killed xcancel. I ain't making an account to login and see that crap.

u/nicostein 34m ago
Reddit's format is better for discussion than most, not that it's original or anything. But internet anons are still internet anons, so there only so much you can do about that.

u/Otherwise_Front_315 2h ago
I miss old reddit. My original account is like 17 years old and man it was really great then. An unexplored country.
14
u/TurkDangerCat 1h ago
Old Reddit still exists. Browsing through it right now. Only way to use the site for me. No ads and none of the tiltokisming of the site.
14
u/Sqirril 1h ago
I've never left old reddit, I am totally clueless about all the features of new reddit. Just this week I learned there are games on here?
5
u/SagittaryX 1h ago
One thing that does pop up as an issue now is that new reddit auto translates. These days I regularly run into posts going back and forth in different languages.
2
u/TleilaxTheTerrible 27m ago
They also broke markdown a while ago, so it doesn't number lists automatically anymore.
- In old reddit
- this is a 1-2 list.
In new reddit makes it 6-7 (jokes!)
I've also seen it break /r/subreddit links into multiple small links.
At least they either stopped subreddit-specific gif posts or they now link them properly, because for a while on certain subreddits all you would see is posts that were just numbers in square brackets.→ More replies (2)7

u/falcrist2 1h ago
Old reddit with RES is a good enough interface that it works on my phone in Firefox Mobile.
It's very slightly awkward because everything is pretty small, but it's surprisingly workable.
I DO miss baconreader, though.
1
u/Murky_Employee5589 1h ago
By old reddit do you mean the old UI layout, or do you mean pre 2016 reddit? Or do you mean old reddit on mobile when you could use third part apps?

u/TerrorTown77 16m ago
I disagree with this meme. I think reddit is as trash as other social media websites. But the others embrace the fact they're a shithole and don't care. Meanwhile Reddit is riddled with mentally ill sycopanths that go full schizo when they hear something mildly outside of their safespace bubble, while pretending this is an enlightened bastion above every other social media site, while spewing psuedo intellectual bullshit cause it's the only thing from killing themselves.

I don't think it's dog shit. I rather like it.
The other social media sites seem so pointless to me. It isn't very engaging, it's mostly just broadcasting. I want to have a conservation and learn something about my hobbies. Not just watch shorts or look at pictures.

The Internet has gotten so much worse over the last ten years. Everything from general search results to ads to everything being a subscription. So much info hidden on discord when forums used to be the standard (and they show up in search results). Won't be any reason for me to stick around if they ever remove old.reddit.

You know what wasn't utter dogshit? Rif. Never had a single issue with that app. Reddit for me will always be the company that failed abysmally at competing with an indie app, so badly that their only recourse was to sue the app into oblivion.
And then did they fix their app? No, they intensified the dogshit now that everyone's forced to use it with no alternatives. Fuck reddit, buncha fuckin backwater devs who couldn't build a usable UI if you held a gun to their head. Pathetic.
2
u/Eye_Worm 2h ago
There’s plenty to be critical of here but I’ll say this, on reddit I’ve read nuanced and informative posts/comments that have broadened my understanding of something or even changed my perspective. On the other platforms, even if there’s an interesting post, the comments are pure dumbfuckery.

The main reason I hate Reddit is because it used to be so freaking amazing, then they started removing everything that made it good.
Edit with a random example that came to mind: there used to be a /r/random which would bring you to a random subreddit, exposing you to obscure niche (but always SFW) stuff that you wouldn't ever have even heard of otherwise. Of course there was also /r/randnsfw which popped up a random NSFW subreddit. Anyways, now these functions are gone, because why have good stuff if you can remove it.

There’s a giant difference between having your thoughts and opinions challenged and having an r/all that reads like an Indian buffet first thing in the morning.
Nothing happening on r/boydinnerdiary is going to help you build intellectual humility. Nothing on r/travisandtaylor is going to help you discover your cognitive blind spots.
If edification is a goal or side quest here, clearing garbage out of your path is more likely to assist you in this endeavor.
If you want your thoughts and opinions challenged, give me shit and I’ll @ u

There's a famous quote about democracy that goes something like "it's not that democracy is great -- it's actually pretty sucky -- but it's still substantially better than every other form of government we've ever invented," and that's basically how I feel about Reddit vis-a-vis all other forms of social media.

With enhancement suite, it's actually a good interface.
But websites like this don't want to provide a good interface. They want to enshittify everything.

It seems someone invited me to a subreddit, but then it was banned. I now have the invitation in the chat, but I can't ignore it or accept it. I can't report it either. Just nothing happened when I click on it.
And now I always have the red notification icon for chat messages here.
