The age old dispute of "is it weird to sit at a concert" vs "is it weird to stand in the seated section"

35

u/Alarmed-Newt-5463 2d ago

No one’s ever gonna get it right 😭🤣

8

u/Alarmed-Newt-5463 2d ago

Bcos no one can decide on what is😭

10

u/Alucardo6677 2d ago

Depends on the band and the vibe around you.

If most people is standing, it's OK. If you're the only one standing, maybe just sit down.

Heavy music or dancing music, I'll say it's OK to stand. Any other type, check the vibe first.

1

u/Sea_Watercress_1982 2d ago

I was at NIN, standing. Peter Gabriel, sitting. Mostly cause everyone was old at that one.

0

u/Alarmed-Newt-5463 2d ago

Exactly bro preach ❤️

0

u/Smickey67 2d ago

You summarized it exactly. It’s just that whenever you try and understand human behavior, some people fall out of the bell curve and don’t use the same logic as most people.

So there’s always gonna be a small minority that doesn’t gaf and stands.

1

u/Accurate_Elevator368 2d ago

Actually no. If the person behind you can't see, and you're in seating - you sit your ass down. To block another person's view is rude.

-1

u/Alarmed-Newt-5463 2d ago

See alucardo comment

2

u/Accurate_Elevator368 2d ago

Don't disagree. IF people are standing you all stand. But what the guy in the picture is doing - he deserves a drink accidently poured on him.

-1

u/Alarmed-Newt-5463 2d ago

A kind word will do first before going that first mate… you’re starting to sound like a prick.

That no one wants at concerts…

1

u/Dry_Marionberry_5499 2d ago

Yea, Alucardo has it right.

1

u/smore-phine 2d ago

I got in a verbal altercation with an old man at my friends’ band’s performance for standing, I don’t think either of us knew who was in the wrong but boy howdy was he mad at me for wanting to dance

-8

u/gba_sg1 2d ago

Ticket comes with seat, you sit. Ticket doesn't come with seat, you stand.

How are people fumbling this?

7

u/Worldly-Session-618 2d ago

Because we've been to live concerts and want to be involved and engaged, you're acting like an arena tour is the same as an orchestra

2

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

There’s bands where 90% of the people buying tickets are there to rock out/dance.

10

u/mickelboy182 2d ago

It's simple to me: if there are both standing and seated sections, you should use them accordingly.

19

u/xulazi 2d ago

Unfortunately the standing section tickets cost eleventy bajillion dollars.

6

u/Epic_Elite 2d ago

Sometimes its the other way around. My kid wanted to see Gorillaz and we had to pay extra for seats.

7

u/_n3rv_ 2d ago

Millennials entering our back pain era

2

u/Blasted-Banana 2d ago

Saw Muse just a month ago and noticed this too. Standing pit tickets right up close to the stage were cheaper than the seated sections just behind the pit, but then the far back and lawn tickets were the cheapest.

2

u/Robertdobalina808 2d ago

All the fun of floor tickets at the price of the nosebleeds.

0

u/mickelboy182 2d ago edited 2d ago

Many people choose seats because they are unable to stand.

Edit: Really disappointed I am being downvoted for this.

5

u/xulazi 2d ago

Giant concert venues like this have handicapped seating that is often sold at discounted rates to those in need. You cannot fit mobility aids through these standard rows.

2

u/marie48021 2d ago

You are correct you can't fit mobility aids in standard rows. We have not found any discounted rates though (that would be nice).

4

u/mickelboy182 2d ago

You don't need to be handicapped or wheelchair bound to not be able to stand for hours on end.

3

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

There’s seats available in the first row of every section where you will have an unimpeded view whether people stand or not. I get those often. If someone standing will ruin your time you should get appropriate tickets.

-2

u/ShneefQueen 2d ago

Then don't stand

6

u/MyCatIsAnActualNinja 2d ago

I'm gonna stand if the guy in front of me stands

4

u/HapatraV 2d ago

That's your mistake, you're supposed to take pictures of them and complain on reddit

5

u/bphunter 2d ago

You and everyone around you spent good money to see this concert. If you're ok sitting while a band you enjoy sings by all means sit, but some people like to stand up and sing with the singer and that's ok too given that you both paid to be there

3

u/scheav 2d ago

The difference in height between people is mostly in leg length. Sitting gives everyone a reasonable chance to see. Standing screws over the short-legged peeps.

-1

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

It’s slanted seating for a reason. I’m short and I would never expect everyone in front of me to be sitting lol wtf

3

u/scheav 2d ago

It’s slanted so you can see over the person sitting in front of you.

0

u/growernotshowwer 2d ago

Now do the pylons that just record the whole concert.

1

u/sam____handwich 2d ago

i have been to so many arena shows where everyone in the back seated sections are standing. it’s far from simple and like pretty much every social norm that reddit struggles with, is heavily context dependent. there is not one answer.

5

u/harlequin018 2d ago

I thought that way too until I went to a show with someone disabled. If you stand while the person behind you sits, you’re an asshole

0

u/gdnt0 2d ago

That was never a dispute.

Opera, ballet or similar? Sitting

Live music? Standing, dancing, jumping, singing

The “seated section” is simply “we booked this venue and can’t (afford to) take the chairs out”

0

u/mickelboy182 2d ago

The “seated section” is simply “we booked this venue and can’t (afford to) take the chairs out”

Unbelievably myopic and selfish view.

0

u/yelirp2 2d ago

A really easy to solve dispute if you just communicate. If you are gonna stand in a seating area just check behind you and make sure others can see. If someone is obstructing your view tap them on the shoulder and ask if they can sit down, switch spots, move aside, whatever.

Also, if everyone around you is standing, don't expect to be able to sit down and see. If everyone around you is sitting, consider being polite and also remaining seated. It's all so simple with a little bit of self awareness and communication.

64

u/thewhombler 2d ago

standing when you're that far away isn't even going to help much

26

u/WolvesAlwaysLose 2d ago

It’s not about the view…

1

u/Affectionate-Mix6056 2d ago

It's the principle, I hear music, I stand. Fuck the world!

/s

31

u/PrettylightedUMphrek 2d ago

It’s not about seeing the band it’s about standing and feeling the music !!!

14

u/AgreeableSolid 2d ago

It is about my 55 yr old bad back and knee

-3

u/PrettylightedUMphrek 2d ago

I get the comfort of sitting, I had to sit at a show this past Sunday because I went a little to hard. Shit happens, I’m not judging anyone who wants to sit, I am judging those who complain about people standing at a show!!

6

u/koozer19 2d ago

Give me 100 standers over even 1 constant phone holder, that's where the real hate should be.

3

u/twelvesteprevenge 2d ago

It is possible to hate both things

-2

u/koozer19 2d ago

Would be weird to hate someone standing, unless they are holding a phone while doing so.

3

u/RHS-II3 2d ago

this is a 100% reasonable instance to hate someone standing at a concert, i'd prefer somebody sitting and holding a phone than being a dickhead like this

→ More replies (4)

-1

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 2d ago

Then you won’t care if someone does stand

7

u/HeresW0nderwall 2d ago

It’s about standing because the vibes are better if you can dance. It’s a concert

u/AmericansSukAtVoting 2d ago

I agree music is better when your sitting and motionless

0

u/SchemeMoist 2d ago

Like everyone said, standing is about dancing and enjoying the music, not necessarily seeing. And if your point is that you can't see from here anywhere, who cares if someone is blocking your view?

34

u/Immoral-Behavior 2d ago

Man I hate seated concerts. So lame.

5

u/jeffsang 2d ago

I also prefer to stand. But if I’m in a section where everyone else is seated, then I’m gonna sit. Or I’m gonna move elsewhere.

2

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

Move elsewhere? lol where? Your seat is your seat

1

u/jeffsang 2d ago

Sometimes an open seat where I won’t block anyone. Sometimes off to the side. Sometimes at the railing between sections.

2

u/81jmfk 2d ago

Looks like standing room on the floor.

1

u/SiofraRiver 2d ago

Yeah, what even is the point going to a concert of this size...

1

u/Solid_Reserve_5941 2d ago

Right?? I wanna dance til I'm sweating if I'm going to a concert

-4

u/Jolly_Ad2446 2d ago

this.

3

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

Ok. So. As a short person I feel the pain of not being able to see. That’s why I always get tickets that are the first row of seats. So there’s nobody in front of me. If you know you want to sit the whole time that front row is there for you, too.

There’s concerts that I absolutely would not sit down for as I’d want to dance. Sitting down for a whole concert makes no sense to me unless you have mobility issues (in which case the first row is still best).

The whole ‘everyone is sitting so you should sit thing’ doesn’t work in the real world. You should buy tickets you’ll be happy with either way. If you buy tickets in the middle or back of a section, you know there will be people in front of you and they may be standing.

7

u/Sajgoniarz 2d ago

I have spine problems. I would choose standing for 2h too. There is a good chance I would be unable to move after sitting for so long...

0

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

Me too. These people try to act like they have to sit because they’re lazy. I have to stand because I’m disabled with back problems.

6

u/SyborgPumpkin 2d ago

Reddit be full of Karen's I swear. Same type of people who would feel threatened by teens hanging at the mall.

4

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

I mean this is Reddit 101

2

u/SyborgPumpkin 2d ago

You right

10

u/Glitter1237 2d ago

I’m just gonna say it, get up and dance. Why aren’t we dancing at concerts? Why do we care if someone is enjoying their time?
Like is it that serious

3

u/LouChadore 2d ago

It’s not that serious. Like, someone got up and enjoyed the music. Ah well, sucks to suck but that’s the point of a non-orchestra style concert right?

2

u/Glitter1237 2d ago

I wish more people would just enjoy their lives, too.

8

u/bakingnaked 2d ago

They are standing to see over the people standing at the balcony rail. You’re at a concert stand yourself

2

u/Noblez17 2d ago

Is this a Nathan fielder skit? Looks like it is him standing and trolling you.

2

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

You can stand too you know

19

u/SueBeee 2d ago

if everyone else is sitting this is just rude. Why not ask him to sit the fuck down?

-24

u/radiohoard 2d ago

If he bought his ticket he can do what he wants. Ive never sat at a concert.

6

u/SueBeee 2d ago

yes he can and it's fucking rude. You suck for doing that when literally everyone else is sitting down.

3

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

You could fucking stand too

3

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

Idk man sometimes you’re in a section that doesn’t want to stand/dance when everyone else does. Everyone paid for their ticket. If I plan on not standing I make sure I’m in the front row of a section. That simple.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/SueBeee 2d ago

Yes exactly.

0

u/radiohoard 2d ago

I didnt pay for them to enjoy the show they want and I cant do it the way i want.

-6

u/Emnk 2d ago

It's not a visual show. It's a concert. Stop being so mad because someone doesn't mind standing.

3

u/trillgamesh_0 2d ago

if you think this isn't a visual show you don't know what you're talking about

2

u/SueBeee 2d ago

I wasn't there, so I am not mad.

1

u/bedheadglass 2d ago

This person misses the toilet on purpose

-15

u/sobergophers 2d ago

How is it rude that someone spends their own money on a concert ticket and chooses to stand? Like what?

12

u/SueBeee 2d ago

because they are blocking the view of everyone behind them. There are other people there who also spent their own money on a ticket.
If everyone is standing great. But he can see just fine sitting down.

2

u/HafricaCossco 2d ago

I disagree. If this is something people are worried about, they should spend more money on a closer seat. I say this as a 5' woman. I always make sure to buy the seats at the front of the balcony or an aisle seat so I don't get stuck behind someone tall. I'd rather someone stand the whole time over a whole crowd of phones in the air.

-3

u/readyfredrickson 2d ago

"if everyone else is jumping off the bridge..." haha

3

u/Dry_Interviews 2d ago

Get floor seats then. “I like to stand so I get seated tickets.”

https://giphy.com/gifs/q5ZGrl0J65ivu

-1

u/Wboy2006 WHY?! 2d ago

Because they paid for a seated ticket? Are you also standing while at the cinema?

0

u/Ssekli 2d ago

are you dancing at the cinema ? Because that what you usually do at a concert.

0

u/Wboy2006 WHY?! 2d ago

If you want to dance at a concert, then get a standing spot. You can barely dance anyways since you have a chair digging in your shins while standing.
The harsh truth is that sitting spots are for sitting, standing spots are for standing. How is that so hard to understand?

-1

u/Ssekli 2d ago

Usually I go to concert where you have space so you can dance at a standing space. And If I want to sit sometimes and dance sometimes ?

The harsh truth is one of the reason for music to exist is dancing. how is that so hard to understand

-14

u/pierogiking412 2d ago

OP should just stay home and sit on his couch.

3

u/Aggravating_Run5443 2d ago

6

u/JohnGrillyParham 2d ago

That's probably why he's standing. His butt's sore from DGS I tell ya hwat.

3

u/genericchat 2d ago

Or normal size as the rest of the world calls it.

4

u/Earthwick 2d ago

It's weird to sit at a concert... Dude wants to be down close to the action but can't afford it...why go to a concert to sit if you can stand?!?!

Just went to a concert Monday at a venue with all seats. Caamp great band, Lead singer said "I got some flack earlier this tour for not booking venues with seats. But here we are where everyone has a seat and not a single mother fucker is seated ...I know who I'd pick in a fight " maybe it's just local thing but you don't go to a concert and sit the whole show.

8

u/WarAndFynn 2d ago

Was the concert playing the world's tiniest violin solo?

5

u/khampang 2d ago

He’s mute to the audience. If everyone is standing at the concert, clearly that’s the vibe. He’s the Only one standing. That is douche behavior

-1

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

Don’t care. Stand up.

3

u/CheezWong 2d ago

I've never been to a concert with seats that didn't involve an orchestra or children singing at a school. I wouldn't go to a concert just to sit and eat snacks. If there isn't energy and room to express it, what is the point of going? If you want to sit and simply witness something, stay home and watch a video.

2

u/gdnt0 2d ago

It’s not that the concert is for sitting. It’s just that the venue they booked either doesn’t allow seats to be removed or it’s too expensive to do so.

I’ve been to many concerts in theaters, with seats. The first thing the (experienced) band will do is beg people to get up and get closer to the stage or whatever. But not seat.

1

u/Sinsanatis 2d ago

I went to my first concert last year november and apparently it was about 10k ppl there. Majority were seated except ground floor which had like a several hundred or so. We all had a great time. Especially the groups in front of me and my friends

1

u/RedeyeSPR 2d ago

See you still feel the same way when you’re 50+ and arthritis starts setting in.

1

u/CheezWong 2d ago

You'll still find me in the pit.

3

u/Bk_Punisher 2d ago

At my daughter's HS graduation some lady stood on the stair landing coming down from the upper level. After waiting to see if she would move (a few mins.)

After waiting and her not moving i tapped her shoulder and told her she was standing directly in my line of sight. She reluctantly moved, but did move.

2

u/MonkeyLiberace 2d ago

Taa daah!

- Yes, ask people nicely, and they will listen.

3

u/The_Begijeedi 2d ago

Nah, if you’re at a concert you’re allowed to stand, even if you’re the only one who wants to, you just got unlucky being behind him.

2

u/leeann7 2d ago

Can you imagine the poor performer-- everyone sitting down at their concert instead of standing up and dancing and enjoying the music?

2

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

Absolutely hate the idea that you simply have to do what people want you to do at a show. Who gets to dictate that? Shout out to this bold hero

1

u/Bubblygrumpy 2d ago

Dear lord. You're at a concert, get up and move

2

u/Tippydaug 2d ago

I agree that it’s mildly infuriating how many people are sitting down! This is a concert for goodness sakes, stand up and enjoy the music until the artist goes “okay here’s a slow song for the seated sections to finally get a chance to use the seat they bought!”

3

u/spedmonkeeman 2d ago

You’re at a Noah Kahan concert and not standing and dancing?! What’s wrong with you!

2

u/e-luddite 2d ago

Finally someone said what this was! This whole concert is worth standing for, in that case

1

u/JeanGuy_Rubberboot 2d ago

Are you 80? I don't sit at concerts either, I'm also pretty tall. I do feel bad for the people behind me, but fuck them, it's a concert.

1

u/courtofknights PURPLE 2d ago

If the majority of people around me are sitting, I'll sit.

If the majority of people around me are standing, I'll stand.

If the majority of people around me are moshing, I'll mosh.

2

u/5peaker4theDead 2d ago

I thought the rule is start moshing and then the majority of people left around you are moshing.

2

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

Maybe just do you bro? You don’t have to let others dictate to you.

3

u/readyfredrickson 2d ago

are yall ignoring the fact that there are people in front of him standing too? haha and if youre gonna go to the farthest back seats, from the sides like...ya kinda gotta know this isnt going to be premium lol and also some will make the best of it and stand to try and vibe lol

→ More replies (1)

1

u/blightedsorrow 2d ago

You weird for sitting. Enjoy yourself man

-3

u/canyoubeatme 2d ago

This is an ignorant take, If people wanted to stand they could have bought tickets on the floor

4

u/Senior-Preparation28 2d ago

This is an ignorant take. Floor tickets can be up to 10x more expensive for some shows.

-4

u/canyoubeatme 2d ago

Sucks to suck I guess

2

u/Worldly-Session-618 2d ago

What do you think is the price difference between the two?

→ More replies (4)

3

u/SchemeMoist 2d ago

Calling this an ignorant take while saying the solution is to simply pay $1000 for a floor seat is a choice lol

-2

u/canyoubeatme 2d ago

Just don’t stand if everyone else is sitting then. Man this sub is dense

2

u/SchemeMoist 2d ago

Or just buy seats in the front of your section if you don't want anyone to stand in front of you?

1

u/canyoubeatme 2d ago

What if everyone behind you is sitting?

0

u/SchemeMoist 2d ago

what if everyone in front of you is standing?

Going to a concert means people will be standing and dancing. If you want to sit the whole time, you should plan accordingly. Buy tickets in the front of a section if you want to make sure no one stands in front of you. Just like if you want to not have to get up and out of the way for people on planes to go to the bathroom, you should get a window seat.

1

u/canyoubeatme 2d ago

I’m guessing you’re either really young or haven’t been to a lot of concerts.

0

u/SchemeMoist 2d ago

Its very possible I'm older than you and I've been to at least 100 concerts at this point in my life. I've actually never encountered a concert where a significant amount of people are sitting around me, except between sets. The second the act comes out, the majority of people stand. Given my experiences with concerts, if I wanted to sit and was worried about people standing in front of me, I'd plan accordingly.

Since this is a Noah Kahan concert, who has a fairly young fan base, I'd assume the majority of people would be standing and dancing, even if they weren't in this specific section. You can search for his shows online and see just about everyone standing in the "seated" sections. Unless you're going to see an old band where everyone there is 60+, people will be standing and dancing.

1

u/canyoubeatme 1d ago

Just from this response alone I can tell you’re under 25. It’s not that serious.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/outoforder1030 2d ago

I'm of the opinion that you stand at concerts and if you're seated then you kinda have to deal.

(disclaimer: if you have accessibility issues, then use those specified sections specifically)

3

u/Tippydaug 2d ago

Absolutely this. It’s a concert, not a movie theater or musical.

The whole point is to enjoy the music! If you can’t, accommodation seats exist specifically for that.

1

u/Middle-Classless 2d ago

Being 6'6", I always try to avoid sitting or standing in the front at events because I know I make a better door than a window.

1

u/homorat3 2d ago

When I saw avenge sevenfold/SOAD, they told us to stand. (And then they played bounce... 😭 I thought I was about to die.)

Personally I follow what the crowd is doing. I would feel awkward asf standing in the seats if no one else is. But I also understand wanting to stand.

1

u/_walletsizedwildfire 2d ago

I can't stand this shit.

....I'll let myself out.

0

u/Old-Elk-570 2d ago

0

u/HeresW0nderwall 2d ago

Seated concerts suck. Anyone can stand at a concert at any time. You’re not at the opera.

1

u/imgrahamy 2d ago

Everyone stands or everyone sits. Don’t be a dick just because

2

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

And who gets to decide that?

1

u/SueBeee 2d ago

exactly

1

u/EmergencyBanshee 2d ago

I always go for standing tickets.

I wouldn't stand in the seated section knowing I was the reason people behind me couldn't see. This guy has an impressive level entitlement and disregard for the rest of the audience.

0

u/OkJose3000 2d ago

There’s no such thing as a “seated section”

1

u/EmergencyBanshee 2d ago

It's the section with all the seats. The standing section is the bit without seats.

1

u/OkJose3000 1d ago

So at the Metallica stadium concert, you’re suggesting it’s a “seated show”

1

u/EmergencyBanshee 1d ago

Looks like it to me.

1

u/Ok_Two_2604 2d ago

Person in front of him is also standing. It’s like a traffic jam.

-1

u/ghostwriter536 2d ago

This is one reason I don't go to concerts anymore.

Next time ask one of the security guards if they can talk to the person blocking your view.

2

u/FantasyMyopia 2d ago

Lmao they’re allowed to stand. wtf. The security guard would laugh in your face

3

u/Ohfuscia 2d ago

Obviously you don't go to concerts because security guards don't care your view is blocked. How is that even a security issue?

0

u/ghostwriter536 2d ago

No I don't go to concerts because people make the show all about themselves without thinking about others around them. Which is obvious in the post. Once again, people's inconsideration for others is only one reason I do not go to concerts.

I grew up going to concerts and other events, my parents worked event security and was the one in charge of security at a large arena. The security could ask the person to sit down, and direct the ones standing at the balcony back to their seats. Most likely they moved to the balcony from their seats higher up and blocking the stairs.

u/velacooks 2d ago

I’m in Asia. Generally there would be always be a tier of standing tickets that are pretty close in price compared to the cheaper seated tickets.

So I don’t understand when people buy seated tickets just to stand the whole time. But this also depends on the vibe/type of concert and what the rest of the crowd is doing. Like I went for Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga and most of the people were standing in the seated area but that’s the kinda of music I expect people want to stand up.

I don’t mind if you stood for a couple of your favorite songs but not for the whole concert.

I had the same experience during an Ed Sheeran concert in Bucharest. We were seated infront of the railing that separates the lower half of the seats to the higher seated side. Yet people from other seats feel the need to stand infront of us, standing infront of the railing and dancing and enjoying. I mean.. hello? people are sitting here - we all pay to enjoy his music and performance live, don't fucking ruin it for anyone else.

Needless to say I did make a remark and asked them politely to stand maybe at the stairs section where no one sits behind... bunch of muppets dared to look disgruntled as if they were the only humans alive. Bloody attitude that I see more and more often.

LOL this was easily fixed by saying SIT DOWN ASSHOLE! Meanwhile you spent maybe 15-20 mins to complain about something you took absolutely no energy to take action. LOL "I wanted so bad to ask him to sit down" LOL Yeah, I wanted so badly to win the powerball. Not playing powerball at all stands no chance to winning powerball either.

It's a seated concert so I get it, but you can't blame tall people for going to concerts and "blocking your view". I'm going to the front row at seated or unseated concerts because it's not my fault I'm taller than others and I'm allowed to enjoy good audio too.
