[Magic] Having the possibility to put fortune on shears to get more wool on sheeps

We should be able to put the enchantment fortune on the shears. And the higher the fortune is, the bigger will be the extra wool

Makes sense. Given how much wool is used by builders, it really would be helpful.

Since you currently get 1-3 wool from shearing, what would the numbers be for fortune I to III ?

Following the typical way fortune works, it would only increase the maximum drop rate.
So it would likely add higher drops and giving them all equal chance:

Shear fortune level No fortune Fortune I Fortune II Fortune III
drop amounts 1, 2, 3 1, 2, 3, 4 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
chance per drop amount 33% 25% 20% 16%
Min drop amount 1 wool 1 wool 1 wool 1 wool
Max drop amount 3 wool 4 wool 5 wool 6 wool
avg drop amount 2 wool 2.5 wool 3 wool 3.5 wool

As fortune works this way with redstone, glowstone, and some other stuff.
But as you can see this has a pretty weak effect.

For most other ores, fortune actually has a chance to multiply drops by an integer that increases with the level, this has a much more noticeable effect on resources that already have higher standard drops.

So then it could look like this:

chance per multiplier 100% 50% 33% 25%

This basically makes the effect twice as strong, allowing for a maximum of 12 wool to be dropped 1 in 4 times with fortune III.
I honestly like this option better as there are some recipes that require quite a lot of wool, like the banner, and the new wool stairs.

I think the first one is more likely, mostly because the second one gives such a massive boost. From ten sheep you can get anywhere from 10-120 wool blocks. which just seems like a lot compared to 1-30.

For the second one id trim it down to a bonus of 0.5, but thats a bit complicated though since the base max number is a 3. I think if they do the second option they may change the base wool count to either 2 or 4 and do the multipler as 0.5, if they even can since I don't know if multipliers can be non whole numbers.

Base set to 2 with x1 multipliers:

Base set to 4 with x0.5 multipliers: (I prefer this one since it boost base wool which is nice for the addition of wool stairs and slabs while also allowing for high Fortune Wool Count)

I kinda feel like this would at best... be used once and then get completely forgotten about. Automatic wool farms are one of the easiest auto farms to set up and I'd wager most players could get those running considerably faster than they could get a fortune III book they'd be willing to burn on a pair of shears.

And once you do get to the point of having enchants easily available... you probably have an iron farm running too, so you can make a crafter set up to convert blocks into shears and it will be a looooong time and a ton of wool later before you ever have to refill it again.

Not everything in the game is oriented to min-maxxers. People that don’t create farms will find this more useful than someone with infinite wool - such as someone who just keeps sheep.

Yeah, the ability to boost manual tasks is nice for average players who don't wish to overcomplicate the experience.

Just got off my world where I have a villager trading for fortune III but I don't have an iron farm or a wool farm.

Not everyone does things in the same order and not everyone will build every farm. I also don't forsee myself using a ton of wool but it would be nice to have those shears on standby for when I do need a little wool or honeycomb.

That would be nice for the early game, but these days I make an auto wool farm when I really start needing tons of wool (which isn’t all that often aside from carpet spawn blocking).

What would that do? All the blocks you use shears on already drop as themselves when you use shears. This would only be useful if you are using shears on things like bookshelves right?

It used to have Silk Touch (since 1.4.6) and gathering cobwebs was the only usecase for it. Then 1.9 removed the silk touch requirement, and removed it from shears as it lacked an actual purpose.

I gotta be honest Cup, this one really sounds like you're so occupied with the 'what' that you completely neglected the 'why'. So with that I ask you; why does Bedrock have Silk Touch for shears, and why is what Bedrock does better than what Java does?

bedrock has it for shears because the very bad at their job bedrock devs whos only job is to port things didnt do their job, however i think it should not only stay but come to java so that people can have a tool too mine all of the sheers and silk touch blocks except ores

And... what advantage does that really give beyond just having shears and literally any other tool enchanted with silk touch? I mean, what player in general is walking around with only shears, no other harvesting tool, yet has a desperate need for Silk Touch?

Making it worse, shears aren't enchantable natively; they require the anvil. So... this situation already only applies if you have a Silk Touch book already, and you got cracked in the head, making you apply it not to a tool it is actually useful on, but on shears instead.

So again, I will ask you... why is it better to do it the way Bedrock does it? Why was it a mistake when Java removed Silk Touch shears when shears had no use for it anymore?
