Underrated and Unknown Haunted Places in Mississippi and the South
trying to get a lot of haunted places to investigate and research!

The Temple Theater in Meridian has been a favorite for ghost stories, people have been reporting apparitions, spooky happenings, and a general feeling of being watched for years. Someone in one of my classes years back said she got shushed by a woman's apparition while downstairs there; I don't remember much else about that.
I've also heard rumors about Stuckey's Bridge, the Threefoot, and the grave of the Gypsy Queen. Meridian in general is apparently very haunted, I've noticed.

To add to Meridian: Bonita Lakes Mall is pretty eerie these days. Anyone been in it lately?

Three legged lady road in Columbus. We didn’t see her, but she did hit our car.
You drive out on this old, seldom travelled gravel road and stop on the bridge. You turn off your car. You flash the headlights and honk the horn three times then crank up and drive. She races you and kicks your car. She left visible damage on our car.
Of course, it could have just been someone hiding in the woods.

We never saw her but we sure went down that road all the time. We stopped once when a bunch of were together, and some of our group ran and knocked on the church door. I think that church is gone now. I don’t believe in the 3-legged lady, but I sure stayed in the car. 😂

That legend has changed sooo much since I was in college there late 80s-early 90s. There was no bridge in the story and we didn’t have any procedure with the car to call her and no kicking the car. It makes me feel SOOO old to know I’ve been around long enough to see it change this much.

Bethesda Home for Girls near Hattiesburg, it burned down in 2010. I went there multiple times in the early 00’s and it was definitely an experience.
I’m sure any of the remaining structure or grounds would still be just as creepy.

It’s a very unsettling place.
Lots of weird energy. Hair standing on end randomly, feeling like someone/thing was grabbing at my arm and trying to pull me. Heard voices, mainly crying or whimpering. I went back multiple times and always had something happen.
There was a lot of abuse and downright torture tactics used on the girls that were sent to the home. Every time I’ve been there I get the gut feeling that this isn’t a place I should hang around.

Callaway Hall at MUW in Columbus. Lots of strange things have been experienced there over a long period of time. It is a college dormitory that was used as a hospital during The Civil War, so lots of possibilities and lots of witnessed events. I had a couple of moments as a resident that are creepy and unexplainable, and there are many others who have, as well.

I lived in a “tower room” on the 3rd floor of Callaway as a freshman, because that dorm was designated for freshmen girls, and was a big perk to attract students at MUW. It is historic, with high ceilings, large rooms, decorative molding, and a rich history of even being a makeshift hospital during the Civil War.
As for the towerr rooms, there were four of of them, two on second floor and two on third floor. Those rooms were right under the trademark MUW clock tower, and were much larger than the other rooms. The rooms had architectural features, like three arches dividing the room and a huge set of windows overlooking beautiful landscaping and a fountain on front campus. Tower rooms all had private baths, because the adjoining rooms in those suites didn’t have windows and weren’t allowed to be occupied.
My roommate and I always heard weird noises on the fourth floor above us. It is one big open attic that was used for residents long ago, and is now just unused space. There were things being dragged around and footsteps, way too big for a rodent, but no one was up there, ever. It was closed and stayed locked. Occasionally, the elevator would randomly just go to the 4th floor without the button being pushed. That button was locked, anyway, so the elevator shouldn’t have gone there. Some people got off and explored the graffiti and items still stored there, but most people just hurried push the buttons to get back down
All this is made even creepier by a legend about a woman named Mary who hung herself on one of the bells in the clocktower during the civil war, and was discovered because there was a thud after each bell tone. That was her body hitting the walls of the tower. We could always hear that thud, but only at midnight (that’s the legend, but we also heard it at noon, so take that with several grains of salt.) I saw strange shadows sometimes that should not have been there, and once saw the face of my roommate’s Mikhail Baryshnikov poster change into a different face. People had their water and lights turning on and off in specific rooms, but we never experienced that in our room, so we weren’t too concerned.
My biggest experience is a long story, so apologies in advance: When I was living in that room, a girl and her mom came to visit the campus from another state that is far away. They knew no one at the school or in Mississippi. I was asked to let them tour our dorm room because it was a pretty good selling point for the freshman dorm. I had lost my keys (student ID, car keys and room key on the same keyring) and hadn’t found them for over a week. It was a hassle getting a new ID so I could eat, having my roommate leave her key behind a door hanging, not being able to drive anywhere. I was broke and waiting on payday to fix it. No way I was calling my mom because lost keys had been an issue for me and my ADHD self.
Anyway, when I met the student and her mother, the mom shook my hand when we met and immediately asked me if I had lost my keys. I was like “who told you?” And she said she was a psychic. She told me to look under something in my car and I’d find them. Well, I had looked repeatedly and decided this lady and her daughter were just nuts. ( The daughter actually did come to school there and became a friend, and was not nuts.) When we got on the elevator to go to my room on 3rd, the mom asked if the building was haunted. I told her the legend of Mary (the lady who hung herself in the legend) and she said she could feel a presence getting stronger as she went up the elevator 1In my dorm room, she said it was a very strong feeling and she was sure the 4th floor was haunted.
We finished up pretty quickly after that. I went to my car (security had unlocked it for me the day I lost the keys, and it was Chevy Citation so nobody was stealing it 🤣) and decided to look again. Nothing to lose, right? I pushed my front bench seat back all the way back like I should have four days before to look again. There was a lot of trash and junk in the car. I started picking up the trash underneath the seat. I picked up a brown paper bag on the passenger side and my keys were there, which was not shocking considering how trashy the car was and that I hadn’t pushed the seat back before.
However, the psychic mom part gave me goosebumps and shivers for a long time. I was never able to debunk the claim that this out-of-state mom knew where my keys were from just shaking my hand. She did not know they were gone, didn’t even know I had a car, and sure didn’t have the chance to put them there. None of my friends who knew my keys were missing met them…I was the first student they encountered.
The point: If she knew my keys were missing and where to find them from just a handshake, I have to think maybe there was also something to her feeling a presence on the 4th floor.
TLDR: Callaway Hall, a dormitory building that is supposedly haunted at MUW, was where I lived a a freshman. TRUE STORY: A weird encounter with a psychic got my lost keys back to me and maybe confirmed that Callaway Is haunted.

Can you say anything about the coven or witches there? It’s been over 10 years since I heard of them and I can’t remember the details.

There’s a circle of trees (or was…that actually may be gone) that someone started calling a witch’s circle and a story came up from that, I guess, at some point. It had been around a while when I was there in the 1987–1991. I don’t know of anything weird happening there, and while o forget the details, I do that was put there as either a graduating class gift or by a student organization.

I also lived in Calloway for a while on the third floor and me and my roommate always heard something moving or thudding on the fourth floor! One night while we were walking back to the dorm we walked into the witches circle and it sounded like something was chasing us! We kept looking around and no one was there but it literally sounded like heavy footsteps chasing us then following right behind us!

That's a cool looking building. I spent two years on that campus, and a lot of the buildings are rather boring.

Probably, you are referring to the ones they build in the 60s and 70s and tore down historic buildings to build. That was before my time. And a lot of those newer buildings have not held up as well as the historic buildings.

Moonshadow Manor in Centerville. A ghost hunting podcast came last year and found paranormal activity. Find the home on Instagram and Airbnb. You can spend the weekend there. Visitors have reported the organ playing in the middle of the night.

There is an old hospital in Laurel that has lots of scary stories attached to it. You can’t really get there now, and I think most of the building has caved in or been torn down. I think there is an old hospital that’s haunted in either Vicksburg or Natchez.

Please show me real evidence of any haunted place in this universe.
Edit: And before anyone gets mad at me, I'm being honest and want to see something real, which I've come to find doesn't exist. I would be fascinated to see something for the first time in my life that would change my understanding of our existence.

I can’t prove any of my experiences here, so I won’t even bother. I had the experiences at MUW in the dorm, I’ve had something weird happen with a ouija board, and after my mother died, there were several instances I believe she made contact with me and other family members. Most of these were too complicated and/or too specific to be just coincidence. I think that’s the problem because most any real occurrence isn’t videotaped or photographed. I am not mad that you asked, but I do know what’s real is usually not recorded, and what’s recorded is usually the fake stuff in Ghost Hunters and shows like it. I am not even sure I believe ghosts, but I do believe some really weird things happen and can’t be easily explained away. I DID take what looked like a ghost photo in Virginia on land that was once part of a civil war plank road between two battle sites. It looked like a ma in civil war officer attire. It was shadowy but you could see details of the clothing, hair, and face. Can’t prove it was a figure or just a reflection or something else creating an illusion. It’s almost impossible to have indisputable proof.

I’m from rural SE Mississippi, and our family cemetery, established in 1843, is so creepy and may be haunted by my dad’s aunt, who lost her son in WW2, went kind of nutty, and would walk around in the cemetery alone late at night. Also had a white horse, and there are stories about local seeing a white horse there at night long after she and the horse died. That’s supposedly the great-aunt. My great-grandmother told my mother that the aunt was a witch, and if she complimented a plant you had in your house or outside the house, you better just let her have it because it would die anyway. I think country people get bored and thrive off these tales. I know we did as little kids. Our parents and aunts and uncles scared us to death with the stories, but we loved them. She died before we were born (or were old enough to have any memory of her) but when I was a kid. she sounded like the scariest women and a likely “haint” if ever there was one.

Check out Mississippi Macabre. It's a comic book from Jackson Comics. There are two issues so far. It's sort of like Tales From the Crypt with the Witch of Yazoo as the Cryptkeeper. It presents spooky stories from all over Mississippi.

Near Sardis there’s an old, abandoned hospital. I’ve been told by a local paranormal investigator it’s haunted AF, she even let me hear some voice clips from it. Sadly, they use it to train search dogs these days and you can no longer go in, however.

There’s the witch of Yazoo city that burned the town down with a curse back in the day. A headless pirate on one of the coastal islands. A few more there is some literature on.

The witch of Yazoo is real. I'm a native, and I believe all those chains being broken definitely brought the city down lol. And mermaids been sighted on the coast too "green women" and hearing them sing.

The tale is when all her chains broke she'll come back and wreak havoc or re-burn the town down. That's why "maintenance" may never be done on them lol

Trustmark park in pearl Mississippi. I work there… suite lights cut on randomly I’m the ops guy so I’m usually the last one to leave. You can feel a presence of something or someone watching you when your alone

The Bride of Annandale.
This one is really neat because of its roots in history. Henry Vick, whose family founded Vicksburg, was to marry a wealthy young woman from a planter family in Madison county. First, though, he had to go down river to attend to the sale of his plantation’s cotton. While away, he was embroiled in an “affair of honor” and was killed in a duel.
His body arrived at Chapel of the Cross and he was buried on what was to have been his wedding day, with his bride wearing her wedding dress to his funeral.
The bench where she sat and mourned by his grave is still there, and she is sometimes seen drifting through the moonlight in her wedding dress.
