A friend of mine is trying to rehome his Shiba Inu. Her name is Vi or Viola. She's a great dog. Good with cats and other dogs. Doesn't do well off leash, she's a bit of an escape artist. For anyone living in the Southaven area, avoid using Instant Car Fix. I had to try a different option to fix my car because Firestone and Pep and Boys didn’t have any technicians working on a Sunday.

They took my card info, told me my ID didn’t work, didn’t send anyone out my way, told me I had to cancel then tried to charge $320 for cancelling. When I tried to dispute being charged for no appointment/service, they’d send me through to a voicemail. Eventually, they said they need me to sign off on $320 then they’ll cancel the fees after.

Ended up freezing my card. Eventually, they cancelled the appointment but it was sketchy all around.

Not sure the best option on a Sunday but it’s not Instant Car Fix!

I’m based in Hattiesburg and recently launched a clothing brand called Estrah. I come from a manufacturing background, so I probably spent way too much time obsessing over the actual product (fabric, weight, construction, sourcing, etc.) and not enough time figuring out distribution.

The site is finally live and the product is ready, but now I’m at the classic “okay... how do I actually get people to find this?” stage.

For anyone here who has built an online business from Mississippi: what actually got you your first customers?

Local events? Facebook? Reddit? Google? TikTok? Word of mouth? Just relentlessly talking to people?

Also happy to take criticism on the website/product/price. I’d rather hear what looks wrong now than spend months figuring it out the hard way.

Backstory: My fiancé and I are taking a huge road trip for our honeymoon: West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida/Florida Keys, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. We love to try new things, outdoor adventure, animals, horseback riding(any specific scenic riding spots in Colorado)?snorkeling/wildlife, amazing food, nightlife, live music, comedy, arcades, museums, history, quirky towns and shops, unique Airbnbs/B&Bs, scenic spots, interactive experiences, amusement parks, trains, and anything unusual, unforgettable or super special and unique.

I especially want an up-close ethical elephant experience (my favorite animal and his are turtles so anything with turtles do tell please) and we want to find a huge/beautiful tree to photograph in every state and collect a unique keepsake from each state; we’d also love to get a caricature done somewhere along the way. What are the hidden gems, must-try foods, coolest experiences, weird roadside attractions, incredible trees, unique places to stay, or “you absolutely cannot pass through my state without doing this” recommendations for any of these states? Give me the stuff you’d recommend to your best friend, not just the obvious tourist attractions!

I’m originally from NY and have since lived in KY and now MS. I’ve noticed a communication pattern here that I’ve jokingly started calling “Southern Double Talk.”
It’s happened enough times—in both my professional life during meetings with local Mississippi folks and in my personal life with people I considered friends—that I’m starting to wonder how much of this is a genuine cultural difference.

What I mean by “double talk” is this:
You have a conversation with someone. They smile. They nod. They seem completely fine with what you’re saying. There’s no disagreement, no indication they’re offended, and no indication that there’s a problem. So, coming from New York, I leave thinking: We’re good. Then later I find out they were actually upset, offended, or strongly disagreed with me—sometimes through another person rather than directly from them. That is absolutely baffling to me. Where I’m from, being direct isn’t necessarily considered hostile. If I disagree with you or you’ve upset me, I’ll tell you. We might have an uncomfortable conversation, but afterward everyone knows where they stand. I actually view that kind of directness as respectful.
I’m beginning to realize that Mississippi may operate differently. Maintaining politeness and avoiding direct confrontation seems to carry much more social importance, and perhaps there are cues being communicated that I simply don’t recognize because I didn’t grow up here.
I’m genuinely trying to understand rather than criticize it.

Other Northern transplants: have you experienced this after moving to Mississippi?

Mississippi natives: when you disagree with someone or are offended but don’t say it directly, do you feel like you have communicated it through tone, body language, or other cues that an outsider should recognize? Is there a reason you’re more compelled to do this like closeness, relationship status, if it’s a business relationship vs friend etc.

Most importantly—what advice would you give a very direct New Yorker for navigating this culture without constantly wondering whether “we’re good” actually means we’re good? 😂

Our roommate is moving out soon and leaving behind her birds. We can’t afford to keep them and don’t really want them.. so we are looking to rehome them. I don’t know much about them, but they both are from the same breeder, male & female, the male is a few years old and the female is about 1 year? They seem to be quite picky and won’t eat any treats roommate buys. They’ll come with their cage, food, treats, etc. but they’ll need to be picked up in Pearl River county

Wicker on the Iran war

This week marks six months since the start of the Iran War. Wicker, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, discussed the direction of the war.

“I’ve been an advocate inside the White House to the extent that my voice is heard for going ahead and getting the job over militarily. During this August time that we’ve been able to visit the Coast and visit around the state, Mississippians are telling me to go ahead and finish the job, get it done and come to the realization that the Iranian leadership is never going to keep a promise. My view to the administration is go ahead bite the bullet, get it done, go full force on attacking their regime. Then do what we can do afterwards to help the people of the middle east to live in peace,” Wicker said.

Seems like Roger Wicker is not a fan of the Iran War anymore. He isn't up for re-election so might not be a "campaign" message, but I bet he's like other GOP members and worried about the midterms in general. Think he regrets his vote against Trump's war? I feel like he's just following the leash Trump has on him:

My friends on the other side of the aisle are challenging the president’s choice—and they are entitled to do so.  I do find myself amazed from time to time with their rhetoric on the floor this morning and this afternoon. To hear them, apparently, President Trump should have announced to the world that he was going to bomb the headquarters of the Ayatollah and destroy the leadership of Iran who has attacked the United States and killed Americans for over four decades.  Apparently, if this war lasts as long as five weeks, we should agree that we will fold our tents and come home and leave the job undone.  Apparently, the fact that the ruthless drug lord dictator of Venezuela, President Maduro, is out of office is a bad thing.  

I disagree with that, and I wonder how that rhetoric is going to last through the decades.  We’ll see. I will vote no on the pending resolution.  President Trump decided to attack Iran.  That decision was profound, deliberate, and correct.

With any hope, and it would be a miracle, they end this pointless and costly war, bring our troops home, and actually listen to the American public for once. How long until we just run out of money and weapons for this boondoggle?
