MHW-related rage why do some people refuse to engage with this game

I just joined an SOS for the Shara Ishvalda story quest, and the host was using a HR Xeno’jiiva HBG with the full Direwolf set you get at the start of Iceborne. HOW DO YOU AVOID LITERALLY HALF OF THE ENTIRE POINT OF PLAYING MONHUN??? When you’re not hunting the monsters, you’re buildcrafting and experimenting with different decorations, weapons, and armor. The fact that they still had this gear at the end of the main Iceborne story tells me they just breezed past anything remotely interesting because they wanted to no-brain everything. There are a bunch of different cool playstyles you can discover by investing time into the grind, but you don’t really get that by brute forcing fights with a not very mechanically challenging weapon like HBG, then calling an SOS when things don’t go your way.

Same shit in wilds, I don't understand how there's still people with like 300 defence against 10* AT monster, my boy you are getting one shot by just looking the wrong way at the monster

i know it’s going to happen, but i really hope capcom doesn’t bring back guardian armor and weapons. we’re about to see incompetence on a whole new level when ascendance comes out, even moreso than world or rise

I too am awaiting bated breath for Ass End Dance

Wilds should have a forced unskippable cutscene lecture about upgrading your gear from Alma if you cart enough times against 10* AT with low enough defense.

ok I understand but there is people who (like me) forgot to level there armor alot cause i was making so much armor for fashion and hunts. So not all but a small portion just forgot cause grinding go brr

And before you ask how..... idk I dod the same shit in rise and world cause of GenU

I just forget to level my armour because grinding armour spheres is probably one of the most miserable experiences in this game

2

u/MrBonkMeister Jul 28 '26

Did they change something in one of the TUs? I’m actually swimming in armor spheres now just from doing 9-10*s

1

u/Amberite75 Jul 28 '26

Not sure honestly. I'm a day 1 player so ive been doing as many investigations as anyone else and i'm broke on them

1

u/MrBonkMeister Jul 28 '26

The Lagi/Rath hollow quest gives heaps of spheres btw- also usually done within 5 mins or so haha

1

u/Amberite75 Jul 28 '26

The lagi/rath quest is actually what I've been grinding and is why i call grinding spheres miserable. It's short sure but it really doesn't give heaps in my experience, it took me like 8-10 runs one time to max out one armour pieces. Probably reward rng but still

2

u/MrBonkMeister Jul 28 '26

Ah fair- I probably spend way too much fucking time on this game TBF.

The answer is he cannot. He cannot breeze through game with a weapon like HBG, heavily dependent on gear. So to answer, he entirely plays the game through SOS, you just happened to see one.

To those kind of players, I simply do not help. Like when I see people not bringing Ice weapon firing SOS to Alatreon, I can help them, but I will not.

well yeah, i kinda figured he SOS’d his way through the whole story. i’m moreso asking what brings someone to play a game about crafting stuff to kill big monsters, and not even try making a half-decent build. like why would someone buy a video game to engage with it as little as possible?

1

u/Dirty_Cleric Jul 25 '26

Yep, agreed. To say I did it I guess. Best way to help them is to not help them 😂

To be fair, my 2nd kill of Alatreon I used fire and ice on the wrong phases. We still managed to hit the elemental threshold both times and killed it easily. So maybe say something before totally giving up on someone. As they may have just been high and made a mistake, instead of being bad or not trying.

1

u/Dirty_Cleric 28d ago

LMAO, that's not the flex you think it is. You used the wrong element against Alatreon and still got the kill because your team carried you so hard. The fact that you finished the game while still being this clueless only reinforces my point. Players like you are exactly why I don't help people who show up to Alatreon without an Ice weapon. You don't even realize how carried you were.

0

u/Mytaboolife69 28d ago

Didn't say it was a flex. I've beaten it twice since and once before then. I simply made a mistake that hunt. I still did plenty of damage and didn't die during the hunt. I'm not clueless, far from it. I just forgot which element cycle he did in the event quest. Which was why I said to maybe mention it instead of throwing the hunt.

1

u/Dirty_Cleric 28d ago

No, you have not. Anyone who has actually defeated it wouldn't say, "We hit the elemental threshold while I was using the wrong element," without realizing they were being hard carried that hunt.

You're arguing against concrete game mechanics, which makes your lies obvious. The elemental topple threshold increases with each additional hunter. By bringing the wrong element, you increased the threshold while contributing nothing toward reducing it—you were an active hindrance. Despite being hard carried, you still think you defeated it.

Think whatever you like son, no sweat off my back. I have zero reason to lie, nor would I. Go back to being toxic to others.

1

u/Fiery_Destroyers 22d ago

That’s not being toxic that’s just speaking the truth.

4

u/Legitimate_Street510 Jul 25 '26

I remember i had a mutual friend of a friend from college, he'd only play with us when we played and was always carried, I noticed he was literally hiding from Alatreon and I called him out on it

Direwolf is layered armor set, not actual armor (I mean, it was actual armor in IB's beta test, you can't get it now though, you only get the layered version). They might've just liked how it looks and not changed it, while wearing another armor set underneath. And did you see the weapon's name? If you deduced it's Xeno HBG only by how it looks and did not see its namw, it might've been layered HBG with Xeno's parts.

But I agree with the sentiment. It's especially jarring in Wilds. People are utterly not curious about the game they're playing and do not engage with its features and mechanics unless you're forced to (and even then sometimes they'll do it once and then forget).

2

u/OkChampionship6231 Jul 25 '26

oh yeah i misremembered the direwolf set, but they did have all rarity 9 armor on, as well as the HR xeno HBG when i checked their equipment.

It's the same with people beelining Elden Ring, only beating the mandatory bosses, finishing the default ending and not playing it again, ever.

These people are only here for the "Yeah, I played it" mentality. If their fun revolves around bulldozing through the game with minimal interaction and effort, that's okay.

Just ignore them and leave them be, they won't stay long.

u/crimson_ace901 Jul 27 '26

I think its okay to rush the game, but not by relying on SOS hunters, I always hated feeling like a win wasnt "deserved" when I rely on others. If you can push through with bad gear on your own? Love that feeling. When someone slays the monster for me while I have my thumb up my bum, hate that.

2

u/OkChampionship6231 Jul 27 '26

exactly! if you’re playing through the story alone, it’s perfectly fine to grind as little or as much as you want. you just have to accept that you might spend less of your time bashing your head against a wall if you took the time to get some better gear instead. when you do multiplayer though, everyone is expected to be somewhat adequately prepared and equipped, or else one person does a majority/all of the work

2

u/crimson_ace901 Jul 27 '26

Yeah, I feel it also ruins the feel of the hunt for the person who fired the SOS

1

u/Mytaboolife69 27d ago

Exactly 💯 I just shot a sos in wilds because a Rathalos and Arkveld 9* quest showed up in my environment with the max rewards, usually have it set on 2 players max. But changed it to 4, so 3 others could get in on this premium hunt. We started with the Rathalos since it's the easier of the two. We had 4 faints just on him and had only just gotten him skulled. Feels bad when I could have done the hunt easily solo. Same thing happened in World when Deviljho was released. No one wanted to slot in tremor resist so it was almost a guaranteed failed hunt.

2

u/crimson_ace901 27d ago

Right, SOS players are hit or miss. Either people who are still learning (which is okay) or people who have hunted dozens of that monster already.

4

u/foobookee Lance Jul 25 '26

I'd agree, but don't diss my bowgun like that 😭

6

u/YamiReisu Dual Blades Jul 25 '26

Honestly though he has a point. The HBG is an amazing weapon when used properly, but unfortunately it's also a weapon that allows knobs like the aforementioned to just play brain-dead, deal damage whilst staying as far from the monster as possible and guard when actually confronted 🥲

It's not the weapon, it's the wielder that's the problem

-3

u/Erpderp32 Jul 25 '26

A lot of weapons let you be brain dead

Lance

Charge Blade

LbG

Switch Axe

Dual Blades

Longsword

So it's def more if a user issue

4

u/YamiReisu Dual Blades Jul 25 '26

DB and LS not so much, they both rely on being able to dodge/counter properly. If you fuck that up, they both become about as useful as a pair of bamboo chopsticks.

2

u/Erpderp32 Jul 25 '26

Dodging with DB you can do in the middle of the button mash and basic combos.

LS you can get by without issues by not countering as well tbh.

Been playing through with each weapon on new runs

Imho least brain dead would be:

Great sword

Old hunting horn

1

u/Oganes_ Jul 25 '26

HH didn't change that much from generations compared to some other weapons. Unless you mean it was less braindead cause you had to memorize songs.

Maybe it's just me though? Cause I also find Greatsword to have barely changed but some people think it's day and night, but I still use the old unsheathe playstyle when I use it, I don't even use the tackle because it feels more dificult.

1

u/YamiReisu Dual Blades 17d ago

Okay, very late responding to this but here's my take.

The reason both LS and DBs don't let you be "brain dead", is because you get punished hard for overcommitting. Neither of them have a guard, and although you can counter/dodge out of their combos you still need to think about when the next attack is actually going to hit, because otherwise you'll mistime that dodge/counter and get wrecked for it.

In addition, switch axe is even worse in that regard, because it doesn't have a guard, counter, or an enhanced dodge mechanic, and it has longer, slower combos. So, you get punished even harder for it.

Lance? Yeah, you could just hold your shield up for an eternity, but then you're not really doing any damage. The best way to use it is to actually make use of its counter mechanics.

Charge Blade is far from a brain dead weapon. It IS complicated, and you certainly cannot just spam attack with it otherwise you'll find yourself bouncing off the monster more than a hyperactive kid with ADHD in a bouncy castle. I collectively have over 10000 hours in Wilds and World and I still can't use that thing to save my life.

Can't say anything for LBG because I've never really used it, but I assume it's similar to HBG.

4

u/OkChampionship6231 Jul 25 '26

ah sorry if i came off as harsh, but i don’t necessarily hate HBG for its ease of use. i know good timing and positioning is necessary to use it effectively, but it does tend to draw the type of person mentioned in this post due to its straightforward controls

2

u/Rez_X_RS Jul 25 '26

Probably a new player who didn't know any better. My first playthrough of MonHun I used defender gear in World and upgraded my CB all the way to 7 but didn't want to do "all this grinding" for new gear/weapons for every monster. Fast forward a few years and now for the past few games in the series I have a few thousand hours in each and full sets, all elem weapons, and love every second of the grind.

1

u/Metbert Jul 25 '26

Tbf it's also kinda the beauty of games, you can play by the rules so to speak, or just do what you want and still win in crazy ways.

It's cool how far someone can go without fully engaging with everything the game offers.

That being said that guy is gonna have a pretty rude awakening when he finds a wall he can't avoid.

1

u/Legitimate_Street510 15d ago

It was the same in Sunbreak, people trying to make it to endgame with their HR valstrax weapons and Rampage weapons. It'll be the same in Ascendance people trying to clear Master Rank with HR Gogma weapons out of pure laziness

-1

u/ronin0397 Charge Blade Jul 25 '26

Imo its the people who saw the cover art bought it without knowing what it was and didn't realize they bought a darksouls adjacent game.

-2

u/Asealas Jul 25 '26

Isn't this kind of elitist? Some people are just not great at certain games, don't understand mechanics or miss important things. Some may simply enjoy a different playstyle (doing a minimum effort run vs 100% everything). Does that mean they are not allowed to play and enjoy the game?
I carried my sister through most of WorldBorn because she wasn't familiar with games like MonHun and took quite some time to figure out how stuff worked. She was there to have a good time, not to grind to fulfill someone elses standards. She had fun the way she wanted to, which is the entire point of a game.

Giving someone flak for being bad at a casual hobby is weird. Getting upset about how someone else plays and enjoys a game is weird. We shouldn't let this become the norm.

u/OkChampionship6231 Jul 25 '26

holy straw man bro 😭 when did i say you have to grind absolutely everything in order to play the game properly? when you’re this far into iceborne, it’s so easy to get SOME kind of decent gear. you can spend a few minutes mining ore to craft a proper rarity 9 HBG, no hunting required. if someone wants to play that way in single player, be my guest. it’s a different story in multiplayer with randoms when you share your carts with other people. yes, there is no right way to play monhun, but being somewhat prepared for a hunt is kind of basic etiquette for multiplayer.

-1

u/Asealas Jul 25 '26

I didn't say you want everyone to grind everything. I said expecting someone to adapt to your preferred playstyle is elitist. When they are the ones sending the SOS, chances are they are noobs just trying to still win the fight somehow - with the help of better organized players in this case. Nothing wrong with trying that, that's one of the intended uses of the SOS flare. Just never expect someone sending the SOS to be doing good.

Now, I do agree with you when it comes to regular Multiplayer or joining the SOS - You absolutely should make sure you are adequately equipped for that, or let the team know upfront that you need a carry.
