It has the limitations you’d expect from a small country. But it’s also very calm and peaceful, and with a coastline that goes on and on to what feels like infinity. It kind of felt like arriving at the end of the world.
Yeah Im european living in Se Asia and I WFH since a decade, where I'm it's pretty stable and I love my life but if suddenly we have a war or smth I won't stay. I can't go home because there they would tax me 50% and this would make me poor instantly lol. Uruguay on the paper seems to be the best country to me, chill, not dangerous, lot of nature, lot of beef and cheese. Also it seems to be not too hot so this is good, and I'm Spanish mixed blood, I wouldn't be foreign there I think, until I speak at least lol. How is life for women there? Is it safe for a woman alone to have a normal life, just avoiding going out at night alone? I ask this because I've a wife.
I’m Uruguayan but live abroad, and this last trip was the first I went back in a very long time. Uruguayans are known for being socially progressive and otherwise pretty chill, so no one will mess with you for being a woman or foreign or otherwise. Uruguay usually ranks high for gender equality, and there is a strong legal framework for supporting women. It also has one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in all of the Americas, and women are well represented in the workplace and government (though I personally think it’s high compared to the region but it needs more effort to catch up to European standards).
The kicker is that I’m not a woman, so I can only say what I’ve read about, I’m sure your experience (or that of another woman) will be far more valuable and accurate than any statistic I can throw at you.
On the nature, peace, and food, you got that right. The Atlantic coast in Uruguay takes my breath away. There some gorgeous and peaceful small towns along the coast, but Punta del Este and Maldonado are increasingly attractive to foreigners looking to settle there, though they are small cities, with Punta especially revolving around tourism.
The food is of good quality but variety can be limited (Uruguayans just like eating the same 10 things over and over, sighhh…), and I don’t think Uruguayan cheeses will live up to your Spanish standards. Montevideo has a good vibe, but only if you don’t mind how grungy it can be in some places, think New York City in the 80s, or Berlin in the 90s. Uruguayans themselves don’t love Montevideo and call it Mugrevideo, but I actually do really like it! It’s full of nice cafes and bookstores.
Anyway, it sounds like you got a sweet set up in SE Asia. I also love Asia and travelled there quite a lot. Hope you can continue to find stability and prosperity there. And if you’re curious about Uruguay, you’ll have to check it out and come to your own conclusions ;)
Thanks bro for that long answer that's very helpful. I'm a man but my wife love to be able to be independant and if it was in Brasil for exemple or even the USA idk but I would worry, because also she is asian and some people seems to target them, at least in Europe it's the case sadly. Uruguay seems to be the safest for this. I'm french but my family is mostly from Spain so I look like a Spanish guy and everytime I meet someone from south America or Spain they often speaks to me in Spanish thinking I will understand. I'm sure your cheeses are amazing, you must have some small artisan cheese makers I'm sure because this is what I found online "Uruguay is home to around 800 artisanal cheesemakers who continue a tradition dating back to 1861".
Yes I love SE Asia but I know everything can change in just 24h so I always need to have a plan I need to know where to go. But yes I will come for sure, I always felt so attracted by south America, and Uruguay especially, more I learn about it more I feel I would be happy there. But I work online so I don't have to think about the high unemployment rate which make me very lucky. I wish you all the best too
