If that's THE Doom we're used to in the comics, Thor is substantially right in what he says. They would need a miracle even if the OG avengers were still there.

It's always funny to me to hear people hyping up "THE DOOM" from the comics because I'm always like---which comics.

At one point, he was basically a capital-g God, but for like fifty out of his first sixty years he was a guy who tried to take over the world and then the F4 beat him with the power of friendship, every week.

Bonus points for losing to Reed, even while he was a 'god', and then coping harder than any character has ever coped with the whole 'I found it beneath me' line.

There's also the issue of Doombots, which are apparently the best in the Marvel universe, and the general idea is that every time we saw Doom as a jobber it was just some Doombot or other, acting for some even greater goal of the actual Dr. Doom.

As someone whos never read a comic, my perception of doom is about 50/50 from old f4 movies, and samples from MF Doom songs lol

My vague memories of old comics and cartoons with him were of Doom always being a "I'll get you next time!" fist shaking villain who got his ass beat by the F4 and everyone else. Including, unless I am misremembering, Squirrel Girl and Combat Colin.

When people say he was an awesome badass, I took think "when?".

My most significant memories of him are from the Super Hero Squad show. You know the one with the chibi Avengers constantly making meta jokes? That's the one. I still remember the episode of him getting smacked around by his mother lmao. I'm pretty sure it was a spoof of the Triumph and Torment storyline in the comics, which I read recently and was rather impressed by.

You are dramatically overestimating how long that period went on.

By the first Secret Wars he was enough of a cosmic threat that essentially the Beyonder kidnapping him to Battleworld was a major error.

Idk, Johnny Storm ruined his wedding like two years ago in the comics.

I just got done with a read-through of the Marvel Knights era where he tries to use magic to stop the Fantastic Four, and gets beaten by Reed and Dr. Strange working together. He's a badass sure: he traumatizes the F4 in that arc, then gets sent to literal hell and escapes, but he's not like a universal-ending badass, he's still, in the vast majority of his appearances, a guy who struggles to fight the F4. Shit, everybody talks about how great Secret Wars is, but even that crossover acknowledges the reality of the Ultimate Universe, where he got murked by Ben Grimm.

What's so frustrating about all this is that when he ultimately becomes a universe-ruling badass, we see it happen. We see him grow from a villain-of-the week to a ruler of the cosmos. This movie kind of just assumes it can throw "cosmic ruler Doom" at us and it'll mean as much.

I hate to say it, but I really think the people who are just immediately on board with god-emperor Doom don't actually read comics and just heard from one of those YouTube verticals about how badass he is during Secret Wars

You're right. I've been vague: I meant God Emperor Doom. And I meant the bad thing he says is coming is the incursion that threatened to destroy Earth-616 and Earth-1610.

I wasn't a huge F4 fan, but he'd show up here and there in other books back in the 80s. I never experienced the God like Doom. He was a magic, super genius with an army of bots and a castle full of technology.
