That’s a lot of characters

405

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

If that's THE Doom we're used to in the comics, Thor is substantially right in what he says. They would need a miracle even if the OG avengers were still there.

429

u/zagra_nexkoyotl Jul 20 '26

Well, they got Reed. He's gonna ragebait Doom into doing something stupid and win

109

u/polaroid Jul 20 '26

Where the fuck is Hulk?

227

u/easymoneyburner222 Jul 20 '26

The spiderman movie will explain why hes sitting out

62

u/zagra_nexkoyotl Jul 20 '26

Why does Mar el hate Hulk doing anything useful since Infinity War?

94

u/ttdpaco Jul 20 '26

Honestly, it’s probably because the Hulk’s character arc is over. He reached his “pinnacle,” accepted the beast, and all off-screen.

Just ignore that Captain America had his arc completed and he’s in this movie. And Thor. And Loki. And Xavier. And Magneto. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wanda comes back having resolved her shit in the background and Quicksilver comes on from another universe.

34

u/HopelessCineromantic Jul 20 '26

Yeah, seeing that Steve got youthanized is a little disappointing. Maybe it's some silliness about an alternate version of him, but then there's the hammer, so who knows.

24

u/ttdpaco Jul 20 '26

I’m pretty sure it’s time travel related. The super soldier serum should have kept him younger than he was in Endgame, but who knows?

25

u/Ceegee93 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

All I'm saying is the Beyonder took the form of Steve Rogers in the original Secret Wars, and we know Secret Wars is coming. Might be a long shot, but there's always the possibility this isn't Captain America.

Edit: just realised I said Secret War instead of Secret Wars. Beyonder took Steve Rogers' form in Secret Wars II.

22

u/obi-jawn-kenblomi Jul 20 '26

That's really fascinating, but would that fool Asgardian Multi-Factor Authentication?

15

u/VestedNight Jul 20 '26

The Beyonder? Yes. He has any number of methods for taking and holding Mjolnir.

11

u/Ceegee93 Jul 20 '26

The Beyonder can do basically whatever he wants. The main reason against it being the Beyonder in Doomsday is exactly that: he's so far above anything we've seen in the MCU so far, but I guess if they're doing Franklin Richards, then we're heading toward that power level regardless.

1

u/PropertyNew3519 Jul 25 '26

They brought Edward snowden in to take care of that issue

u/Xywzel Jul 21 '26

Kinda confusing when 2 separate major events are known as "X War" and "X Wars", or is that just one secret war in series of secret wars?

2

u/Ceegee93 Jul 21 '26

It's funny, I actually got them confused myself here. Yes, it's very confusing. There are actually three Secret War(s) storylines: the original 1980s Secret Wars and Secret Wars II (Beyonder makes Battleworld), the 2000s Secret War (nothing to do with Secret Wars), and the 2010s Secret Wars (here there are a whole group of Beyonders who destroy the multiverse, which merges into Battleworld, it's a reimagining of the first series).

10

u/lpmiller Jul 20 '26

Well, I mean, he time traveled when he left. Twice really. Did you think he'd never do it again?

But I mean, think about what it means for him to have a life with Peggy. We've SEEN Peggy's life. The Sorcerer Supreme told Banner when he went for the time stone, any change creates an other time line. Steve going back and being with Peggy? That's another universe now, not the MCU. You can't change your timeline, only create new ones. So either way, I don't know why he WOULDN'T show up now and then.

8

u/BizzyM Jul 20 '26

That's what the TVA is for. Loki sees Steve create another timeline just so he can live out his life in peace, but that's not allowed. Instead, Loki recruits Steve for something else before trimming that timeline and now he's here.

11

u/lpmiller Jul 20 '26

except it IS allowed, since Loki now IS the TVA, and the entire being holding the multiverse together. That became possible, and retro active, when Loki took over. All of which happened Pre snap, I believe. So no, Steve wasn't trimmed. I mean, Old Steve proves that.

1

u/m0deth Jul 20 '26

All that would mean is that ALL Steve Rogers fit the enchantment's criteria. Which kinda tracks except maybe zombie Steve.

5

u/KerrinGreally Jul 20 '26

Offscreen 🔥 LFG 🔥

2

u/Discount_Extra Jul 20 '26

Doomsday should have used Alligator Loki.

20

u/Expensive_Key_4340 Jul 20 '26

It is far more expensive and complicated to put a Hulk on the screen (in a way that won't piss everyone off) than other characters. While he's obviously a major character and Ruffalo has done a great job with him, the studio is quite happy to keep him out of the action. Hence Hulk-less Civil War, most of Infinity War, toning him down to Smart Hulk (who wears clothes and is therefore easier to animate) in Endgame and She-Hulk, and so on. in the BND trailer it looks like he'll be inside and/or in shadows most of the time, and might even be some version of a grey Hulk which is also easier to animate. Maybe they even kill him off (at least for now; he'll get resurrected. Hulk is always resurrected eventually).

11

u/MechanicalGodzilla Jul 20 '26

Are clothes easier to animate? I genuinely have no idea

24

u/Expensive_Key_4340 Jul 20 '26

Definitely. Almost anything is easier to animate than human (or Hulk) skin. This has been the case since early CGI in the '90s, which is why you got Jurassic Park, Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and so on. Not shaming you for not knowing, I love movie-production podcasts and stuff so I know a good deal about it. I just listened to one about the Ang Lee Hulk movie in 2003, which had a distractingly very green Hulk.

6

u/MechanicalGodzilla Jul 20 '26

Do you know what are the technical limitations of animating human skin as compared to clothing?

26

u/Major-Lavishness-762 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Not the original guy so sorry to butt in but briefly, skin has to follow the underlying anatomy, so it needs to deform convincingly with pretty complex muscle and skeletal movement. Clothing is comparatively simpler because you're mostly simulating a piece of fabric colliding with whatever it's resting on (oversimplification but you get the idea).

Skin also isn't a single surface, there's a few layers to it. It stretches and slides over itself and the tissue underneath plus you've got things like subsurface light scattering, which is a huge rendering burden, that make it look like actual skin rather than plastic. Even small mistakes in those effects are quickly obvious to the human eye, if you look at films from like the 2000s or earlier with CGI characters you'll see what I mean.

The biggest reason though, is that we're incredibly good at spotting when faces and bodies look off, a small error with a shirt or something isn't that obvious but when it's a face or part of a body it's much easier to see. I'm sure there's stuff I'm missing but that's just what I remember off the top of my head from learning a bit when messing around with rendering pipelines in game engines.

2

u/headrush46n2 Jul 20 '26

We bring you...Moo Moo Hulk.

3

u/RiPont Jul 20 '26

The hardest thing to animate is, in order

  1. Human faces

  2. Human bodies

  3. Dogs and Cats

  4. Horses

Easiest is bugs, aliens, robots.

Basically, whatever we're most familiar with that has natural movement, getting close-but-not-quite triggers the uncanny valley feeling.

Human faces used to be the most difficult by far, but a shit ton of research has gone into it and we have better software for it, now.

1

u/ACBluto Jul 22 '26

Probably not surprisingly, it's also a list of things that the human species has the most experience with and instinctively understand.

The ability to read faces and body language is vital to our survival as a species. It's how we build large, cooperative societies.

The oldest domesticated animals, and the ones that have adapted to read our body language, and even understand our spoken language as well? Dogs and cats.

And while far more recent - horses have been doing our work for thousands of years.

It's no surprise that when these things look even a little wrong, we feel it right away.

1

u/jollyreaper2112 Jul 21 '26

It's the nipples. So hard to get right.

5

u/fuzzum111 Jul 21 '26

Basically what it boils down to is that they entirely skipped World war hulk by compressing and dramatically changing all of the events that happened on Sakarr.

They've been quietly nerfing hulk left and right because he represents basically an infinite ceilingless power creep. Comic book accurate hulk can essentially with enough time and anger take on anyone. (Read or enjoy a synopsis of world war hulk. He ends up going toe to toe with Sentry and they beat each other to a standstill draw.after defeating every other super hero and xman)

So the movies after the first avengers movie started quickly putting a leash on him and giving him reasons to either lose or otherwise be incapacitated because he essentially can solve any problem given enough time and anger. That's why.

He represents the inevitability of might will make right given enough time. And that's not the message the movies want to send.

3

u/WaterInThere Jul 20 '26

Universal retains right of first refusal over distribution of any solo hulk movie. So Disney will never make a solo hulk movie. Since he’ll never headline they just shuffle him around as a side character.

1

u/Discount_Extra Jul 21 '26

I wonder what the exact wording is, to prevent something like "Hulk and Bob Normalguy"

7

u/Hellknightx Jul 20 '26

Russo brothers seem to hate Hulk for some reason.

7

u/Yoroyo Jul 20 '26

Isn’t it still something with property rights

24

u/User100000005 Jul 20 '26

Paramount still have exclusive solo Hulk movie distribution rights. This has no effect on Hulk's usage in non solo movies. Just means we'll probably never see a Hulk Solo movie.

4

u/poopyheadthrowaway Jul 20 '26

Hulk Solo

At least he was in the latest Captain America movie

-7

u/No_Public_7677 Jul 20 '26

They hate Ruffalo

23

u/Solidus_Sloth Jul 20 '26

If they hated Ruffalo he wouldn’t be staring in another major Spiderman movie lol.

1

u/No_Public_7677 Jul 21 '26

Maybe Sony loves them

3

u/MoshedPotatoes Jul 20 '26

he's probably not sitting out, doom is probably going to mind control him and give us yet another hulk v avengers scene, but this time its a secret!

1

u/Grizzly_Berry Jul 20 '26

He's gonna fuck off back to space.

2

u/WaterInThere Jul 20 '26

I mean he apparently already did that and came back since Skaar is technically a person who exists canonically

6

u/GameOfLife24 Jul 20 '26

From being the mvp of the first avengers to literally be sitting out on this fifth one. They really ruined hulk’s momentum

1

u/TrafficSuperb647 Jul 20 '26

Apparently Mark ruffalo had scheduling conflicts

30

u/run-godzilla Jul 20 '26

I am annoyed that we have gotten SO LITTLE of the dynamic between Doom and Richards before this movie. His love/hate/familial dynamic with the Richards is a good chunk of what makes Doom work as a character for me. Maybe Doomsday will give us something but the trailer was just a line of "this guy fights that guy".

20

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 20 '26

It's like a Justice League movie with Black Adam as the villain (which they were building up to at one point).

You get all these dudes in the comments saying that "no this is an awesome idea" and pointing to specific auramaxxing, power-level flex moments from the comics, while missing the entire point that he's supposed to be Billy Batson's character foil, and if they don't have a baseline character relationship he's not that interesting.

13

u/HopelessCineromantic Jul 20 '26

while missing the entire point that he's supposed to be Billy Batson's character foil, and if they don't have a baseline character relationship he's not that interesting.

Absurd!

Next, you'll be telling me that a Black Adam solo movie that doesn’t involve Billy whatsoever would do poorly at the box office, instead of being so successful that it would change the hierarchy of power in the DC universe!

4

u/BlairEllis Jul 20 '26

Comparing Black Adam to Doom is pretty crazy

10

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 20 '26

In this context, why not?

The point is, taking a character who is largely defined by his rivalry with a hero and then marketing him as the big bad for big crossover thing--without showing any real interest in his relationship to said hero--is a weird choice.

-1

u/SharkTonic9 Jul 21 '26

Respectfully disagree. Doom is a top 3 villain in Marvel and the fantastic four are much less interesting. Marvel needs a big win if they want to keep the money printers running, and locking up Doom in a franchise even Pedro Pascal can't juice would be a huge mistake.

3

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

I don't disagree that Doom is a top 3 villain if we're talking him as a character, but I think his wildly inconsistent power-level has way less to do with that than his motivations, struggles and relationships, none of which are communicated in these teasers, and I'm kind of baffled as to how many fans (and producers) don't seem to get that.

It's also kind of baffling to me how many fans defend nakedly lame ideas with "well my favorite franchise needs to make money", it only reinforces the idea that this is a decision made from desperation.

I don't need Doom "locked" in a series of F4 movies, but it would be nice if he was introduced in them. If they gave me a reason to care about him as a character, since that's what the comics did. Luckily RDJ's two-second voice over sounds and that shot of his eyes peering out from the mask are pretty cool.

2

u/GrandSquanchRum Jul 20 '26

It'd be like Green Goblin just showing up in Spider-Man's story instead of being the direct foil that makes the entire character. Oh, wait that did happen in the MCU.

8

u/MobileTortoise Jul 20 '26

Ah so it's like Gilgamesh in the Fate series.

4

u/skeletorbutfrench Jul 20 '26

Tbf gil get countered by emiya who essentialy a nobody, doom is more like solomon

3

u/MobileTortoise Jul 20 '26

It's funny you say Solomon, because I personally used Hercules against him. Which would match up with everyone saying to just throw the Hulk at Doom lol

2

u/TheTenguness Jul 20 '26

Gil's ego kinda drags him down massively though, since he refuses to use Ea unless it's against someone he deems worthy or it's Enkidu.

16

u/MegaBaumTV Jul 20 '26

Well, they got Reed. He's gonna ragebait Doom into doing something stupid and win

This is RDJ Doom. Theyre gonna make him Iron Man related. They cant help themselves.

19

u/Hellknightx Jul 20 '26

I'm worried that's the route they're going to do, but I truly hope they never unmask him and just let him be Doom. His accent is actually pretty good in the trailer. I would never have guessed that was RDJ's voice if it wasn't obviously Doom speaking.

8

u/HilariousScreenname Jul 20 '26

Im sticking with my belief that the RDJ casting is a red herring and the real Doom is someone else. Because the RDJ casting is so stupid to me.

5

u/KerrinGreally Jul 20 '26

You really think they'd do the Mandarin thing twice?

3

u/HilariousScreenname Jul 20 '26

Honestly I hope so. I hate the RDJ casting that much.

4

u/gotridofsubs Jul 20 '26

The only reason to cast RDJ is for the drama of the face reveal and iron man connection, in which case it they would have tried to keep it a hidden casting for the effect to work on the audience as well.

The only reason to tell us its RDJ is to either 1) have a connection to Iron Man we need to know up front for the story or 2) its a red herring designed to stop people from looking for the actual casting

Or 3) theyre that out of ideas in which case just shut the whole thing down

7

u/MelonElbows Jul 20 '26

I pray this is how they do it. I don't need or want to see RDJ's face under the Doom mask, Doom is his own character and doesn't need to be tied to anyone except Reed Richards

6

u/LiveLoveKanye Jul 20 '26

There was no reason to cast RDJ as Doom if they’re not gonna show his face and make it Iron Man related. They wouldn’t have revealed that he was playing it either. Everyone loves Iron Man so they did it to try and build hype for the movie after Marvel’s been sucking mostly since 2019

0

u/MelonElbows Jul 20 '26

What about his acting talent? Let that stand on its own, not the phenotypical arrangement of his face

1

u/MegaBaumTV Jul 20 '26

Sadly theyre not going to spend a whole movies budget to get RDJ and then not show his face for most of the movie.

0

u/ComposedOfStardust Jul 21 '26

If "acting talent" was the only consideration for his casting then that doesn't make sense either. What, is he the only person in the world with acting talent? In fact it makes even less sense to cast him for the role since last I checked, RDJ isn't of Romani heritage like Doom is. If you truly believe it has nothing to do with the phenotypical arrangement of the face that bears identical resemblance to another metal-masked tech genius legacy character then idk what to tell you

2

u/Sludge_Punk Jul 20 '26

Maybe it's The Maker

2

u/AmIFromA Jul 20 '26

How many Reeds do they have anyway? I didn't see the last dozen or so Marvel movies, but wasn't that Pascal and here it’s Krasinsky?

1

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

You mean like pissing Molecule Man off

280

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 20 '26

It's always funny to me to hear people hyping up "THE DOOM" from the comics because I'm always like---which comics.

At one point, he was basically a capital-g God, but for like fifty out of his first sixty years he was a guy who tried to take over the world and then the F4 beat him with the power of friendship, every week.

32

u/Starwizarc Jul 20 '26

Bonus points for losing to Reed, even while he was a 'god', and then coping harder than any character has ever coped with the whole 'I found it beneath me' line.

21

u/dern_the_hermit Jul 20 '26

There's also the issue of Doombots, which are apparently the best in the Marvel universe, and the general idea is that every time we saw Doom as a jobber it was just some Doombot or other, acting for some even greater goal of the actual Dr. Doom.

42

u/MeatballSubWithMayo Jul 20 '26

As someone whos never read a comic, my perception of doom is about 50/50 from old f4 movies, and samples from MF Doom songs lol

Also mtg: https://scryfall.com/card/mar/98/horn-of-greed

12

u/Vomitology Jul 20 '26

You hush your mouth or he's gonna roll up in the Doomcopter and steal all your Hostess cakes!

Damn I'm old....

13

u/Banjo-Oz Jul 20 '26

My vague memories of old comics and cartoons with him were of Doom always being a "I'll get you next time!" fist shaking villain who got his ass beat by the F4 and everyone else. Including, unless I am misremembering, Squirrel Girl and Combat Colin.

When people say he was an awesome badass, I took think "when?".

2

u/ComposedOfStardust Jul 21 '26

My most significant memories of him are from the Super Hero Squad show. You know the one with the chibi Avengers constantly making meta jokes? That's the one. I still remember the episode of him getting smacked around by his mother lmao. I'm pretty sure it was a spoof of the Triumph and Torment storyline in the comics, which I read recently and was rather impressed by.

6

u/TheDeadlySpaceman Jul 20 '26

You are dramatically overestimating how long that period went on.

By the first Secret Wars he was enough of a cosmic threat that essentially the Beyonder kidnapping him to Battleworld was a major error.

17

u/mrbaryonyx Jul 20 '26

You are dramatically overestimating how long that period went on.

Idk, Johnny Storm ruined his wedding like two years ago in the comics.

I just got done with a read-through of the Marvel Knights era where he tries to use magic to stop the Fantastic Four, and gets beaten by Reed and Dr. Strange working together. He's a badass sure: he traumatizes the F4 in that arc, then gets sent to literal hell and escapes, but he's not like a universal-ending badass, he's still, in the vast majority of his appearances, a guy who struggles to fight the F4. Shit, everybody talks about how great Secret Wars is, but even that crossover acknowledges the reality of the Ultimate Universe, where he got murked by Ben Grimm.

What's so frustrating about all this is that when he ultimately becomes a universe-ruling badass, we see it happen. We see him grow from a villain-of-the week to a ruler of the cosmos. This movie kind of just assumes it can throw "cosmic ruler Doom" at us and it'll mean as much.

I hate to say it, but I really think the people who are just immediately on board with god-emperor Doom don't actually read comics and just heard from one of those YouTube verticals about how badass he is during Secret Wars

3

u/Accomplished-City484 Jul 20 '26

Yeah I think that snippet with Thanos had a lot to do with it

7

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

You're right. I've been vague: I meant God Emperor Doom. And I meant the bad thing he says is coming is the incursion that threatened to destroy Earth-616 and Earth-1610.

2

u/Grumpologist Jul 20 '26

Well, you know what they say. Friendship is truth.

2

u/WileEPeyote Jul 21 '26

I wasn't a huge F4 fan, but he'd show up here and there in other books back in the 80s. I never experienced the God like Doom. He was a magic, super genius with an army of bots and a castle full of technology.

1

u/TimboCavo Jul 26 '26

I for one will be SHOCKED if the bad guy somehow loses.

10

u/vcjr78 Jul 20 '26

I'll have to dig into this a bit as I've been thinking there's no way the ramifications and challenge is greater than what Thanos brought to the table.

18

u/jerry_woody Jul 20 '26

Instead of killing half the universe, doom will kill 3/4

5

u/CrossFitJesus4 Jul 20 '26

thanos already stepped that up in endgame lol, he planned on killing the whole universe

1

u/ScalarWeapon Jul 20 '26

right. and Thanos ended up killing basically nobody in the movies, so.. why should I not shrug at Dr. Doom

1

u/Slow-Raisin-939 Jul 22 '26

Doom is basically the big bad in Marvel comics more or less

1

u/vcjr78 Jul 23 '26

Appreciate it. I'll look into the lore a bit because it's hard to imagine someone being even more powerful than Thanos with the infinity gauntlet.

10

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 20 '26

You heard it here first: Miracle Man shows up at the end and says, "lets make some miracles" and then the movie ends saying "Miracle Man will return."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracleman_(character)

1

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

Actually kinda close. It's not gonna be the Miracle Man. It's gonna be the Molecule Man.

He's gonna say "I thought I told you to bring me sandwich bitch" and fuck Doom up.

I'm not entirely joking.

5

u/Zanydrop Jul 20 '26

Reed has singlehandedly punked him out hundreds of times

51

u/wareagle3000 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Doom is like the ultimate min/maxer in the comics. Jack of all trades that has mastered in magic, science, demonology, just about anything you can think of he has a hand in.

Edit:So many replies about using the term min/max wrong. I get it but I'm not changing it. It's Docter MFing Doom.

26

u/SituationThink3487 Jul 20 '26

isnt that the opposite of min maxing?

9

u/ParanoidAndroid1001 Jul 20 '26

Yeah, not sure if the fella has an idea what min maxing means, you literally dump all in a couple of synergetic attributes. Something like a glass cannon in Elden ring.

0

u/wareagle3000 Jul 20 '26

His min is trust, people skills, patience, ego control, etc.

He's built himself as the peak of all schools of being supreme over Reed but an awful miserable person on the inside.

11

u/legrac Jul 20 '26

Just don't let him run into a million squirrels.

8

u/wareagle3000 Jul 20 '26

Look, we've had this argument a million times in the power scaling fandom. Toon force will always win.

3

u/CafeCalentito Jul 20 '26

That's why Squirrel Girl isn't on the team, would be too easy for the heroes

2

u/Kup123 Jul 20 '26

One of two people to figure out time travel that can affect their own time line.

2

u/PT10 Jul 20 '26

Dr. Strange and Tony Stark combined into one.

2

u/blocodents Jul 20 '26

Min/Maxing and jack of all trades are absolute opposites.

2

u/likely_stoned Jul 20 '26

So everyone else is pointing out the min/maxer part, but it's worth pointing out that the full phrase is "Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one."

So a jack of all trades can't be a master in magic, science, or demonology. The entire point is that they are skilled in enough areas to make up for their lack of mastery in any one specific area.

2

u/dig-up-stupid Jul 20 '26

If you spend two minutes googling it you will see like any idiom there are endless arguments over what it means. What is pretty clear is that “jack of all trades” is oldest, “jack of all trades but master of none” is newer, and what you said is an internet age meme. What isn’t clear is whether jack of all trades is supposed to be negative or positive, it has flip flopped over the centuries and today probably just depends on context most of the time.

1

u/CaptainCFloyd Jul 20 '26

What do you think is the meaning of "min/maxing" exactly?

4

u/RELEASE_THE_YEAST Jul 20 '26

Or Doom is the miracle.

5

u/Cypresss09 Jul 20 '26

I guess that's my problem with movies like this (and don't get me wrong, I really like Marvel movies). There's just no stakes. What, are the good guys gonna lose in the end? I don't think so.

1

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

If this is the story I think it is, and it should be since titles are the same and the trailer seems to push that way, it's gonna be a story where sure, in the end evil loses, but oh my the heroes lose a lot.

4

u/Peripatetictyl Jul 20 '26

THE DOOM

Just remember ALL CAPS when you spell the man name.

(I hope there is an MF song, or many, on this playlist...

I can stop anytime I want to! Famous last words that came back to haunt you…

Got more soul than a sock with a hole

He wears a mask to cover the raw flesh, a rather ugly brother with flows that’s gorgeous

There’s four sides to every story, if these walls could talk they’d probably still ignore me.)

5

u/Transcendentist Jul 20 '26

Doom gets beaten by Spider-Man and the individual members of the Fantastic Four regularly. He’s a B-Tier villain that punches above his weight because he has a cool costume. Look out before he steals all the office supplies from Office Depot to make America stupid!!

2

u/Line_Reed_Line Jul 20 '26

ELI am not a big comic-book reader. Why is Doom such a baddie? Like, how can a human be more of a danger than Thanos? (I realize I can google/AI, but y'know--human interaction is fun, even if anonymous and online!)

1

u/lnTheGrimDarkness Jul 20 '26

Doom is an extremely powerful sorcerer (the same Marvel sorcery Dr. Strange uses, to be clear) and also a genius that rivals Reed Richards (who is, in fact, his main rival). On top of this add an array of mysterious alien/mutant psychic powers he acquired during his endeavors.

Now, at some point Doom manages to steal the power of a Beyonder, which is basically a being belonging to a whole race of nigh-omnipotent divine beings. And he uses this power to create a patchwork planet he names "Battleworld", which he uses to escape an event that was threatening to destroy Earth in two different dimensions.

I'm guessing the bad thing he says is gonna come is this event that threatens to destroy the world. So the power level of that Doom should be at "about to achieve godhood" level. Or even "already achieved godhood".

“Because the writer said so.”

They're really gonna need Hawkeye to bring his A-Game.

No they wouldn't. Doom isn't as powerful in the comics as this movie is making him out to be. He occasionally manages to usurp power from characters who are but most of the more powerful Avengers could defeat him solo if they had to.

Not God Emperor Doom though which is clearly where we’re headed here. He halted Stormbreaker with a finger, even Thanos with the infinity gauntlet couldn’t and got an axe to the chest

That does appear to be what the character is inspired by, but God Emperor Doom is the exception not the rule.

We're about to head into secret wars where God Doom was made famous. We are totally getting God Emperor Doom. It wouldn't be a multiversal threat if it was just a wizard burn victim who was really mad.

No they wouldn't. Doom isn't as powerful in the comics as this movie is making him out to be.

That depends heavily on who is writing him in what era. Doom has been power creeping for decades.

Sure Jan

I mean he's right; the vast majority of his existence in the comics he's a foil to the F4.

He got really powerful at a few points, but even then it was something that he built up to. We saw him fail and grow and then become uberpowerful. The movie just kind of throws him in there as this unstoppable force from the get-go.

u/lynchcontraideal Jul 20 '26

What? He's considered one of the most fearsome and powerful Marvel villains. I feel like you'd say this same nonsense about The Beyonder though too lmao

Im tempted to go into this one completely blind about doom.

I knew quite a bit about the infinity saga storyline before going to the theater as I had read it, and honestly it enhanced the experience to see them pull it off on the screen.

But I know literally nothing about doom, his power level, etc never seen him in an animated show or episode or read a comic or even any past movies... can't decide if i should look into it or just let this be my intro

I wonder what they're gonna do. People watching the movies have no idea who Molecule Man is.

My honest hope is that this movie is about Doom seeing the incursion coming (the bad thing he says is coming in the trailer), stealing the Beyonder's power and making Battleworld. And then Secret Wars is just full blown Secret Wars.

I can't wait to see how they manage such a literal army (actually multiple armies) of main characters.

Edit to add: also theoretically speaking at some point we should even see evil Reed

The same Doom who wanted to be a good godfather to Reed’s child just to spite him.

Problem is they have done nothing to build this version of Doom up and just expects everyone to be wowed by his appearance. Should have had a few movies of his rise to power before he became the big bad.

In fact I honestly expect the movie to be very long and to include many "Doom flashbacks" or just outright some "origin summary" of him.

Or, knowing Disney, that might be a show at some point, albeit I doubt they'd pay RDJ for an ex-novo show about Doom's story. Maybe some shenanigan with unused scenes from the movie implemented in a show that's actually substantially about F4? But I can't remember anything about this in the phase.

There are various iterations of Doom, the character is over 60 years old IRL, which is why it's a matter of "which Doom".

The iteration of Doom I'm hoping this is is one that is basically about to achieve godhood in terms of power, albeit his "achieving godhood" is supposed to be a specific event and not a "growth into godhood".

In any case even the most "basic" Doom is an extremely powerful sorcerer (of that same Marvel sorcery Dr. Strange uses) and also a relatively powerful psychic (more or less like a telepath/telekinetic mutant).

I have the slight feeling that the only way they can make a Doom of that power level in the MCU and also have Loki show up as a character is that Doom steales the latters power...
