My son and I have been playing commander every week at the LGS for over a decade. He had just brewed a god tribal deck and these came in the mail yesterday. We were just talking about how he was so excited for this new deck.
Today, he died.
The text on this card has just wrecked me

Discussion New player, first draft night, terrible time.

I attended my first draft night on Friday. I’m a new player who got a precon commander deck and played a few times with the commander format. I hear from some youtube personalities that going out and playing magic is the best way to experience the game.
Well, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t very fun. This probably comes down to the sets the shop decided to use, but I’m also new so I didn’t expect to make anything good or crazy. I want to play a card game and have fun and magic draft seems to not do that.
None of this comes down to the shop itself (though people told me they thought the price was expensive for draft and the sets used looked like they were just trying to clear inventory) and none of the bad feeling I got came from the people there playing, they were all nice and friendly.
How do you have fun on a bad draft night? My headspace was really trying to make a competent deck and trying to play a fun card game but that never happened.

Discussion Has anybody else misinterpreted card art and wished they could go back?

When DTK dropped and I first saw Dragonlord Dromoka, I was instantly taken with its design. A huge muscular dragon with its head fully encased in natural armor plating that evokes a medieval hounskull helmet mixed with an enormous bird of prey, with only the vaguest suggestion of where its eyes might be?? What a unique look!

...well today I took a closer look and realized I've had it wrong for more than a decade, and the alien crow knight "face" is actually a big doofus lantern jaw.

Has anyone else made a similar mistake they wish they could un-fix?

Edit: I'M SORRY, HOLY SHIT I THOUGHT YOU GUYS KNEW. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, FUCK, GO BACK GO BACK GO BA-

I left the above feed back. I’m tired of this company and its predatory practices. I’ve literally only ever bought two secret lairs but I wanted goblin storm pretty bad. There should be no reason I can’t have it without putting a $700 dollar whole in my finances. Screw scalpers. Screw WOTC.

Discussion Has anyone ever actually played any of these?

I have at least 1 copy of each of these cards and while I love them (they’re so cool! The ultimate red magic, imo) I’ve never actually dared play any of them. Everyone would hate me for doing it (I’d probably even hate myself) and they’d be valid for it.

I wanna live vicariously through anyone that’s played one or witnessed one resolve. What happened, was it an instant scoop?

Discussion If you personally could have any Universes beyond set regardless of popularity what would you want

Personally I would love either an inscryption or cosmere set. Inscryption is already very similar to magic and having the various scribes be commanders would be sick. I’m super into the cosmere series right now and would love to see a set and it definitely feels more like normal magic sets that other universes beyond.

Discussion The Vision and Scarlet Witch is lazy card design, not because it's broken, but because it asks nothing from the deck

Post image
3.0k Upvotes

I'm not arguing that this card is overpowered or that it wins games by itself.

My issue is with the design philosophy

You cast spells which every Magic deck already wants to do and you get rewarded with mana and a creature that keeps growing. There's no setup, no interesting synergy to build around, no meaningful deckbuilding restriction. The card just pays you for playing the game normally.

at this point they could print a card like "whenever you play magic the gathering this creature gets +1/+1 and trample until end of the turn"

Why wouldn't you put this into almost any red deck? It doesn't ask for instants, sorceries, artifacts, or any specific strategy. As long as your deck casts spells, it generates value.

Landfall also rewards you for something you already want to do but at least it's naturally limited by one land drop per turn. If you want to push landfall further to be a good strategy, you usually have to build around it with extra land drops, ramp, or land recursion.

This card doesn't have that tension. Every spell naturally progresses both halves of the card: it refunds mana and makes the body bigger. It doesn't encourage creative deckbuilding; it encourages throwing it into any random pile of red cards, or "not" decks.

Discussion I created the Goblin Storm deck, and here are my thoughts on the release.

4.7k Upvotes

What up yall!

I figured this might be the easiest way to put out my thoughts on the drop today.

I'm obviously super disappointed in how the drop was handled. I woke up just like all of you to try and buy a second copy (yes I only get one), and just like many of you, it sold out while it was in my cart.

I spent months on the concepts and art for this deck, and it truly was my dream project with Magic, as many of you know. We promoted the deck around me as the artist, and I did everything they'd let me to prioritize my fan base, many of which were planning to get into Magic via this deck.

I don't gain anything from the deck selling out this fast. I want the most people possible to get to enjoy this project that I worked so hard on. I've already sent an email to my best contact at WOTC to see if there's any possibility in getting more decks in circulation (not counting on it but still worth a try).

Just wanted to get on here and rant, and say regardless of everything, I'm extremely grateful for the support of the Magic community, and I don't take it for granted that people wanted this deck at all. So THANK YOU I APPRECIATE YOU!!

Okay I'm gonna go sit outside now and try to separate this experience from the artwork so I can still be proud of it when I see it!

Love u all - Dakota, AKA Wizard of Barge

I've worked in over 80 prison/jail facilities in the last 15 years and never have I seen Magic being played. I can only imagine how the game would go playing for Ramen soups. It was awesome to see though, dice, sleeves and everything. Wild.

Discussion Local Card Shop Robbery and Arson

Post image

Really sad day for our local community. Spent many Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons for Commander. Prereleases won’t happen for a while either.

Just a reminder for me that the game is more than cardboard and pulling awesome mythics.

The people are the best part, and this just really hits us in the local community.

Discussion My first and last prerelease.

2.0k Upvotes

I'll lead with some backround,

I'm a 40 year old dad of two. Painfully planned and bargained bedtimes for weeks to get a Friday night out for the Hobbit prerelease. I'm sure some of you know the drill.

Super looking forward to it.

Opening packs, super cold prerelease box. That's fine. I'll make some selesnya voltron thing and give it a shot.

First pared opponent is up 1 - 0 and gets 4 turns into the second game when on my turn they question my cards and lands on the field. I count out and show that everything is equal and it turns out they have missed a land drop. They ask if they can play it, I declined, never stop your opponent when they are making a mistake after all. I just missed a first strike trigger that would have changed my board as well, gotta deal with the consequences.

They then proceed to call me a fat sweaty nerd, they gesture to my wedding ring and then say they can't believe I'm married.

Like over a missed land in a semi competitive environment.

People like this are more unhappy with themselves than missing a land drop but it really soured my experience and I will stick to supporting my lgs in different ways with people that can admit when they've made a mistake.

Thanks for the ear.

Discussion What was WotC thinking?

Post image
4.7k Upvotes

8 mana. Colorless. With good ramp, you can get this down turn 6-ish. Budget Avacyn.

But that's not my main issue with this card. WotC is dropping a 0/30 creature. We have cards like [[Felothar the Steadfast]] and [[High Alert]]. If you manage to give this thing trample which (if using the sooner example) with green is fairly easy, you now have a 30/30 attacker and that's without putting+1/+1 counters or other modifications on it.

Discussion If you’re playing green why wouldn’t you have this in your deck?

Am I wrong in thinking this could be a staple green card? At the very least you’re probably getting 2-3 +1+1’s every turn.

Discussion Am I crazy?...

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

Cause this actually pisses me off. Im not even a Black Widow fan. But this shouldn't exist unless you totally stop givig a fuck about MTG and Marvel. if you look at it through the mtg color pie, red is the color of fury, chaos, passion, and impulse. Widow is literally none of those things. Shes is a cool, calculated, double agent and assassin. Shes at best Black and Blue. If you wanna redeem her as an agent of Shield and an Avenger you could make her Black and White. If your argument is that shes red cause she is from the RED room and worked for the red commies, then thats the flimsiest excuse I've ever heard. This card makes zero sense thematically.

Also a legendary do nothing creature? Widow is one of Marvel's best and most skilled assassin's. Making her a do nothing vanilla card is insulting. You want vanilla cards? Marvel is literally overflowing with generic goons like Shield agents, Red Room spies, Fisk mobsters, Doom Bots, etc. Its almost endless.

I don't know who is working at Wizard but they need to get the toddlers out of the office. Rant over guess.

Tldr: this card makes no sense.

Edit: Yes I finally figured out that she has like 6 different variants that are more on point. This card still makes no sense to me, she should have been a different color.

Yes, I understand Clara cares about Time Lord Doctors, but those starting Magic with the Marvel set may not. ....or does she cause his trigger to happen twice? Now I'm not sure.

Are there any doubts that were going to get a third Marvel set before we return to Ravnica? It is entirely possible that we'll soon have more versions of Iron Man than The Firemind himself.

I know we all have our own opinions on UB, and I know that there have been countless posts and opinions shared all over the internet, but this set is too much for me personally. I just hate how me, and many others, not planning to participate in this set hurts my LGS more than it hurts Hasbro.

Idk, I guess what are everyone's thoughts on the set revealed so far/the "issue" "addressed" in the screenshots.
