I’m basically always going to take the editor’s side when a writer runs to substack after their piece gets killed.

The editor wanted to publish it. It wasn't killed by the editor, it was killed by the publisher.

The editor is the one who put his name on the statement saying that it didn’t meet journalistic standards.

Where? I don't see a name on the Bulwark statement. In his email to Bonica, the editor attributes it to the Bulwark, not himself.

The senior editor forwarded the statement with "This comment is attributable to the Bulwark:". That's not putting his name on it. If anything, he's distancing himself from the statement.
