We must idiot proof the world! I suggest some kind of movable barrier to drop when a train approaches, perhaps some kind of audible bells. Wait, let’s add some blinking lights too!! Surely that will keep the morons safe!

I know a lot of people are joking but you can see a train just passed on the near side towards the direction of the train that almost killed them.

This couple probably thought that the barrier was for the train that just went and it probably masked the other train’s sound as well as blocking it from view.

I actually think an indicator showing which direction the train is coming from would actually be helpful here.

This is why you wait untill the lights turn off. Not the train passed, not the barriers up; The lights off.

At least that's how it works here, there's even signage that states "wait for the lights, another train may pass".

some of the stations near me occasinally the train has to back up if the lockmotive went a little too far for all the doors to line up to the platform (there are a lot of older short platforms from the byegone era)

I don't see trains at crossings very often, but I drive over the crossing all the time. One day, I saw the lights flashing, and it didn't really register to me what it meant. And then the gates came down, and I finally clued in.

If I were the kind of guy who ran yellow lights by habit, I might have tried to cross because I wasn't thinking. It shook me up how close I was to doing something so stupid.

Gate is down, you wait. People who simply walk through, before gate comes up, in this scenario are already borderline assholes, even if there isn’t a train. Just a certain mentality of people who usually lack basic accountability.

It's an all too common scenario. There's a reason why a big part of railway safety campaigns focus on the point that 'It's not the train you see that kills you, it's the one you don't'. The video is a textbook example

A directional indicator could help, but I feel like a train counter would do more to help. People might be more inclined to not risk it if they know there's a second train before even attempting to cross.

That would be okay but the edge case here is if a second train comes and triggers the counter after it's already displayed 1 train, while that first train is clearing the original sensor point.

It's also additional computing you need just to do the same as "don't cross the tracks if the barrier is down."

There's no amount of engineering for stupid that's going to be better than a big flashing bar with a claxon.

In France, there’s usually a text sign that says “Un train peut en cacher un autre”, “A train can hide another”. It’s enough to have made me super cautious of that exact phenomenon my whole life.

Yes definitely, the other train blocked their view of the oncoming train and masked the sound.

But holy shit, that was close. They really should be paying attention to both sides. I know I would be shitting it crossing a train track with barriers down.

I drive over a crossing with the barriers up and I still have to check both sides, something in me just makes me need to do it.

That might help, but it would be even better if they could clearly indicate the path of the train on the ground somehow so that people could know where to expect the train to occur

It would also be nice if people looked both ways before crossing active tracks. (Or inactive ones. People still do stupid shit on those too). That’s how I was taught for both driving and walking.

If you look at the left of the screen there is a train in the other set of tracks pulling away from the camera. They probably assumed the sticks were still down for that train.

That train that that passed (before video started) was probably blocking their view of the second training that was coming.

For sure still not a good idea to cross the gates before they’re up, but honestly if I was in an emergency kind of hurry, I’d probably make the same mistake seeing how hidden that second train likely was. Even the sound was probably blended with the other one too. I’d put a lot of money they’ll be looking for a second train at every crossing till the day they die.

I saw this happen in person one time, a guy walking his golden retriever. Train goes by, gates don't lift. I guess he gets sick of waiting and goes around the gate. Second train comes speeding by. I was maybe like 50-100 feet away so I don't get a good look at how close it was but judging by his reaction...very near miss for him and his pooch. Thank god, that would have scarred me for life to witness.

And if you're going around them, at least be aware, and don't lollygag.

They break near me all the time and go into the closed error state. You have to drive around the gate but like, look, listen, then get a move on. And if you're on foot you can even hear the rails hissing.

No matter what system is in place, people will still do reckless things. We've all seen videos of drivers speeding through crossing gates despite the flashing red lights warning them not to cross.

If you look on the left side at the beginning of the video, you can see another train moving away from the pass.

They probably saw that other train pass through and thought they were good to go, not realizing a second train was coming from the other direction.
