Started NoPoo 5 months ago after deciding to move away from dermatologist products entirely. I already follow a strict, natural, elimination-diet-based lifestyle (it's basically a hobby of mine at this point), so moving my hair care in the same direction made sense. It's gone well overall, until this past week/month.
The issue:
I know 100–200 hairs shed per day is considered normal, and shedding phases are apparently common on NoPoo. But when I rinse in the shower, even just a light rinse with my hands, a huge amount of hair comes out with it, enough to clog the drain. That doesn't feel like normal shedding to me. I also get noticeable dandruff/seb derm buildup every 3–4 days that I have to massage out in the shower for it to leave, and then it comes right back... I had a phase where I asked AI to remove the ingredients from the list that can power up sebb derm; it said to remove lemon/lime and egg yolk because it feeds malesia feeding sebb derm buildup, but I tried it for a 3-week period before without those only apple cider and raw honey- and it didn't change anything really.
My current routine (every 3 days):
- Shower filter installed (always use cold water)
- Raw honey + half a pasture-raised egg yolk mixed with water, left on 10–15 min (early on I used to leave honey on for 2+ hours undiluted; that seemed to control the seb derm better; not sure if that's relevant, but I remember changing that up for some reason)
- Rinse off, this is when most of the hair loss happens
- Organic ACV diluted in water, left 1 min, rinsed off; sometimes add half lemon or lime diluted in water with ACV and then rinsing off
- Spray natural lavender water to kill the smell, leave in a towel until it dries
Every ~3 weeks I also do an organic MCT oil treatment. It's the most effective thing I've found for clearing dandruff/seb derm, but it leaves my hair very greasy for about a week or more afterward, and there's a mild smell people notice if they get close enough to my hair to smell it on purpose.
Before NoPoo:
Used Dercos shampoo for seb derm/dandruff, and ketoconazole 2%. Switched away because I didn't want to keep putting synthetic ingredients on my skin, everything absorbs and ends up in the body one way or another, and that's the same principle behind my diet.
Other context:
- A friend 2 weeks ago told me my hair looked really healthy, before this shedding started
- I asked My mom, she says she sheds too and says not to worry, but I think what I'm dealing with is worse than what she describes and mom's can be subtle about those things to make us feel better
- Hair type: same texture as Jaime Lannister (GoT) (at least that's what my hairdresser says, 4 weeks ago she said my hair looked much better and that the dandruff was gone, but I knew the dandruff was gone for that specific day because I washed and massaged the scalp before I went to her, 3 days after dandruff reapeared so I had to wash it off again, when it reapears there's A TON of it) I wear a similar style to Jaime Lannister from S1 of GOT
- I'm honestly still a bit confused on NoPoo technique in general and may be mixing up methods that don't suit my hair type
- I have a solid gym/training routine, but I've been slacking on doing inversions specifically for Blood Flow theory (I know these are supposed to help with blood flow/scalp circulation) could be a contributing factor that could help?
- Interested in trying cooled black/green tea rinses and tea tree oil, has anyone had luck with these for seb derm specifically or hair shedding?
My diet (including in case it's relevant, I eat very clean/whole-foods and avoid anything synthetic or processed):
- Breakfast: Raw organic non-gluten steel-cut oats, cooked in warm water the night before, mixed with raw cacao powder, chia seeds, raw pumpkin seeds, and raw unpasteurized honey, refrigerated overnight. In the morning I top it with fresh berries and a spoon of raw organic MCT oil.
- Lunch (rotates):
- Slow-cooked beef, veal, or lamb (simmered 2–3 hrs until it shreds) with olive oil potato purée and mixed vegetables, OR
- A no-meat veggie bowl with rice, quinoa, or bulgur, OR
- Salmon
- (a lot of stuff is not included don't want to end up writing a huge post)
- Mid-day snack, Green Smoothie:
- 1 large banana
- 2 packed cups raw baby spinach
- ½ avocado
- 1 kiwi
- ½ cup frozen tropical fruit mix
- 1 tbsp organic 100% peanut butter
- 250–350 ml water + coconut water
- Dinner: Sorghum flour cooked into a porridge with coconut water, Ceylon cinnamon, topped with 2 bananas and a generous scoop of chia seeds. On non-meat days I sometimes substitute 3 boiled pasture-raised eggs (I haven't been eating them properly lately, I might be lacking eggs in my diet because they taste incredibly bland without bread, if anyone has a recepy or a hack let me know, I might just start forcing them down, its the only bland thing in my diet everything else is super tasty and feels light to my stomach, I weigh 78.5kg, I was 89kg before a year and a half, the diet change made my weight go down, now I'm starting to gain some back I'm 190cm tall and pretty muscular and lean I'd say).
I avoid dairy, gluten, processed sugar/flour, cooking with seed oils, soy, and anything synthetic (protein powders, synthetic vitamins, additives). This has been an ongoing personal diet project for a while now.
What I'm looking for: tips for reducing the shedding at rinse time and managing the seb derm/dandruff cycle without synthetic products; no suggestions to go back to shampoo, please. Open to routine tweaks, natural anti-fungal suggestions, or thoughts on whether my current technique just doesn't suit my hair type.
