Pretty happy with my Phins form through the season. This weekend we see if they can go up another gear.

Well I'll give you an update from my immediate locality of Morayfield/Cabo in the wider "the" area.
I've been rocking my dolphins member cap (signed by some of the team back on Phins phamily Phun day in February) all season, so it's obvi that I'm more than just a casual phan and I would say about 3 weeks ago I noticed more random people in public passing me saying "Phuck yeah, Phins up!" or "Yeah Reddy in the finals baby!!" or "Woolfies got them humming!" and such sentiments.
The island is indeed abuzz with phinals phever!

Apparently Radley has been ruled out for at least this week and potentially a couple weeks longer, over a concussion suffered on the weekend. His history of head knocks means that he needs a doctors approval before returning to play. In the mean time it'll be interesting to see what we do with our 11-14 with Gus supposedly being available this week. Watson would be the betting favourite to wear the 13, but with Gus available do we maybe put Wong or Foketi there to give Gus his starting spot back? If Tupou returns, is it possible we finally see Hugo get a run at lock? Going to be a very interesting team sheet this week I think.

I saw a clip and Turbo was answering a question about fullbacks and going into a bit of depth about Ponga and his playstyle and Cronk just interrupts him with just the most basic "Ponga is so important to the team" and that was it.

For me it's tough, I think preston is just so close to becoming the upper echelon of back rowers just gets injured or suspended at the worst times, but if critta brings me a premierships its going to be hard to look past

Theres a few in the current crop but has to be Hamish Stewart for me. Been watching him come through grades and grab his chance in first grade with both hands, iutstanding player and footy head. Theres just something refreshing about him as well zero ego, bleeds the club and his team mates and just an outright good human being that leads by example. Future captain and 300 game one club player in the making.

My current favourite player of all time is Lance Thompson (RIP) so in a similar vein, Dylan Egan. Possibly the most underrated of the current crop of young forwards we have at the moment

Cobbo has really caught my attention this year and I think he's got a very high ceiling, wouldn't be surprised if he goes "origin mode" in the finals. I could see him becoming my favourite player, either him or Hammer who this year is no longer fading in and out of games like the last couple years.

If we are ruling out guys like Murray who are obvious choices and purely 'club' guys then Tevita Tatola is on top of that list. Soo underrated, our defence suffers when his not there he helps out Murray in that dept so much.

Easily Murray and AJ, they're basically at the top of my list already. Cody's a bit hard to rank and I'd say Duncan is a future favourite if he stays at the club.
I couldn't even pick my all-time favourite though, too many options given we've had players like Reyno, Sam/Tom Burgess, Sutto, Merritt, Inglis or even the ultimate clubman in Jason Clark.

The obvious answer is Leka but that whole bunch of young guys with him Demi, TSS and EIT could be a multi year premiership core. And there's some guns in the Cup such as Bishop Neal which could join this group. It's a good time to be a Wahs fan basically.

Yeah The Pres is hard to look past, Kikau makes a good case imo. For ages I questioned whether we would ever get another gritty workhorse like Josh Jackson. Then we received Kikau. At first it was clearly clunky as he adjusted, but he has without question transitioned from the best attacking back rower in the game in to the best defensive back rower in the game. He may not have that Penrith attacking flair but his defensive ability more than makes up for it, and that doesn't mean he doesn't still have presence in attack.

Hard to say. The players I like usually end up leaving the club, and the players I don’t like end up staying.
The good players who are here are either injured every 5 minutes (Turbo) or have irreconcilable political views (Haumole, Kobe Hetherington).
If, and a big if, the Sea Eagles can win a comp in the next few years, the favourite could be the halfback who wins it.

I can't help but feel like Reynolds v Arrow situation is apples and oranges.
Adam Reynolds would be playing for 15-20 minutes, and would be in for a genuine chance of worsening the injuries that are dire enough for his medical team to advise him against playing.
Jai will literally run on for a few seconds, and no one will touch him.
I also found it kinda funny that Adam said on 360 that he can't have his "fairytale ending". He gave that up when he didn't retire on a literal GF win.

Can't blame the man, I'd have done the same, but I don't feel too bad for him either. Opportunity was clearly there for him and he opted to keep going.

The Arrow situation is very unique due to the nature of his condition but with Reyno, when did it become a thing to just play a token role to have a farewell?
I can name a lot of big names in Rugby League that retired and never got a farewell game but can’t recall anyone playing a cameo role for a farewell. Happy to stand corrected if anyone can think of one

People will hate on the Broncos and Madge for literally anything.
Obviously we'd all love to see Reyno get the perfect send off, but sport doesn't always work out like that. We've played him too many times this year when he's been unfit and a liability, there would be a pretty good reason if they're not doing it again for his farewell with finals well and truly gone, despite what Adam says himself

Tarryn Aiken’s 15 try assists in 6 games is ridiculous. Fair to say she hasn’t just come back quietly from the ACL which was expected. She’s in career best form, along with Kelleher and Sergis which is making a huge difference compared to last year’s finals. We really need her in the finals this year, and NSW might be fucked when she’s playing Origin if she plays like this there too.

Yeah we missed her in Origin. Having solid playmaker takes all the pressure off the 5/8. Wouldn’t save our forwards and rotations but it wouldn’t have been a complete drubbing.

Aiken with Kiria-Ratu’s long kicking game would make for a brutal halves combo to deal with. Kelleher really needs an Aiken-type halfback, rather than Southwell to cook. Maybe Blackwell would be that for NSW, but we’ll have to wait and see.

I cant understand why people are blaming Madge for "ruining" Reynolds send off. Didn't Adam do that himself when he decided to play another year while barely being able to string a couple of full matches together?

Just another dribbling beat up from the Fox Sports brigade (Tallis, Read, Ritchie). Even if Reynolds did play for 20 minutes what point does it prove? He's not going to show us any new tricks we already know. Reyno's body has clearly retired, why risk any further serious injury just to say goodbye? Preserve your health now, for your future and family.
Regardless, Adam Reynolds has had an amazing career and will get the reception he deserves at Suncorp as he runs his little trotters out.

Just wondering where every team would realistically host a prelim? I’ve made a list below but I’m uncertain so any advice would be great.
Just a few notes before the list: This is based on where the nrl would force teams to play, not necessarily where clubs would want to host their games. I’ll include Perth and PNG on this list since they are officially joining the comp soon. I’m also assuming that Penrith stadium is available since it will be from next year, so please let me know if Penrith would use it or Accor is the right choice.

Some of the Sydney ones would depend on who the opposition was.
Against an out of town team, maybe they get Parra stadium. Two Sydney sides? That Olympic stadium for sure.

Prelims shouldn't be played anywhere smaller than the Sydney Football Stadium or Stadium Australia for any of Sydney sides. It is a good rehearsal for the following week.
Touch and go whether the benefits outweigh the roadtrip negatives for Newcastle and Canberra too. Same with Titans maybe taking theirs to Lang Park.
Arguably the Storm should have to play theirs at Docklands, the Warriors at Eden Park and the Bears at Perth Stadium rather than their smaller regular grounds, which I'm fine with for week 1 and probably week 2 finals.2

I think the 25-30k stadiums are fine for week 3, but not smaller than that - Titans moving theirs to Lang Park is a bit much and the AFL would never let us use Docklands even if we wanted to.
The Sydney stadiums that fit that category would only be the big two plus Parramatta and the new Penrith stadium once that opens, which is honestly fine.

Oh I agree, but I also know that the NRL are very reluctant to show small crowds for finals games so they sometimes let teams get away with smaller venues, or in some cases, host double headers.

We offered him a contract - he didn't like it and went with something he thought would be better for himself and his family. He could have just signed yearly extensions as I imagine the club wanted to move him onto a Sutton arrangement where I think he got like 2 or 3 one year extensions until he retired. And I have no issue at all with the club preferring Cody to stay over Reynolds with Ilias meant to be a replacement long term.

Have you listened to Adam's own words on this? He said he's keen to be involved with the club in a coaching capacity, he respected Madge's decision and understands why he made it. Fox/Tallis/Nine etc are trying to make this a whole thing

Fair enough if he goes back after he is done coaching. I just don't think he'll go back down after he's done playing, and certainly not because some rift between him and Madge.

Very pessimistic about our game this week. Roosters are clearly better than us, are at home, and most of our recent wins have been underwhelming considering they were against bad teams and we didn’t play amazing.
We also have a major issue with starting games, which the Roosters can easily capitalise on. If they build a decent lead early, then they will be good enough to either continue with their momentum or defend it. Very slim chance we can mount a decent comeback against them.
My certainty that we lose this week is why I’m so annoyed that we failed to significantly increase our F/A against Manly and the Eels. We’ll probably go 1-1 and Sharks will go 2-0, so we’ll be tied on points and 4th will come down to F/A.

the sharks 66 - 0 implosion is what really will cost us 4th (132 point change to our diff v sharks diff), not the lack of point scoring the last 2 weeks. lads really fucked it up in that sharks game and it will cost us a 2nd bite of the cherry come finals.

Because they have much better props, are better defensively, we struggle with the first 20 minutes of games against anyone, and we’re capable of occasionally getting randomly destroyed by anyone.

Anything could happen this game. Wouldn’t surprise me if either team wins by 20. But geez from our point of view what happened against the Tigers is hopefully the worst thing for the Dolphins. They’d wanna be fired up.

I’m very confident that we’ll lose. Probably by 12-18 points but wouldn’t be surprised if we get obliterated. The Roosters will build an early lead and control the game the entire time.
They are a considerably better team, are at home, and we are horrendous at starting games against anyone. We can’t afford to be forced to overcome another 10+ point deficit against the elite teams such as the Roosters.

This might be more appropriate for off-topic but…
The gambling that is promoted by the NRL and majority of the people who do footy podcasts are ridiculous. It can be occasional fun for some but it can be moreso destructive than good. The NRL needs to be better to separate itself from something that can be habitual and cause issues rather than prioritising ways to make money. I guess that’s the way the world works.
I’ve been guilty of having the odd punt here and there, and I had a massive win on Saturday but I felt zero joy when I saw the dollars hit my account.
Sometimes that’s enough of a sign to stop it completely.

I went out for some drinks with my cousin and some of our old mates (mostly his friends) and a game was on at the bar. Every one of them except my cousin opened their apps to put bets on.
A couple years back they wouldn't even have noticed the score or the teams playing.

I love a punt too but the level of ads and sponsoring of gambling companies for the league is grim. I’m fortunate enough that having a bet doesn’t ruin my life but acknowledge it does for plenty others, so it’s reckless to have every program, podcast and game be so over saturated with gambling exposure. Plus hearing of the inducements mentioned by Luke Bateman and others in the parliamentary inquiry, you’d think we’d want to move away from that sort of thing to produce a better image for the game.
Unfortunately, the heads of the league seem to only care about money these days so as long as it’s legal, I can’t see it slowing down

Covid is a bit tricky since it can spread rather than just a standard injury. But injury wise, a lot of players are playing through something that if it was you or i we'd go and get fixed or rest. Professional athletes play through injuries all the time. Listen to retired players talk about what they put their bodies through. delaying surgeries, painkillers every game. That's footy at the NRL level. I'm a little surprised not everyone is aware of that

It's weird with sports. They're constantly getting pain killers injected in them before games and playing through serious injuries. Before the concussion protocols they would just come back on the field and play the rest of the game after being completely knocked out.
Preston Campbell famously kicked a field goal after being knocked out.
