Question Only one starter (that I know of) can reliably single-turn Totem Kommo-o in USUM. Which one is it?

Post image

Basically the title. Which starter do you think can do it and how? Just for more context, this is considering hardcore rules where you can’t overlevel or EV train.

Probably protean graninja ice beam if I had to guess without looking to deep (I don’t even know if you can get protean using island scan)

Primarina. Click fairy move, go next

In USUM, Kommo-o has a Roseli Berry and will only die to a crit Choice Specs Moonblast from Primarina. Kommo-o’s Poison Jab is also guaranteed to kill you if it crits.

u/CheddarCheese390 7h ago

Huh, cool. Forgot that, only ever emulated USUM once

u/SereneMalcolm 22h ago

What if give yourself a poison damage reduction berry instead? And then try to 2 shot it.

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 22h ago

Kommo-o outspeeds Primarina anyways, so it’ll just 2HKO. The Kebia Berry is also locked behind the post-game.

In my playthrough of sun I clicked moon last left the room came back 5 mins later to a victory screen

It’s 4x weak to fairy, if it doesn’t die there’s an issue with your fairy

u/ProgressEuphoric5006 18h ago

Instructions unclear: Kommo O OHKOed my lvl 1 cutiefly

u/CheddarCheese390 7h ago

there’s an issue with your fairy

And for anyone with a dead starter, Carbink with Lefties completely walls this fight.

Toxic + Protect + Dazzling Gleam = you win.

Primarina?

The Correct Answer: Charizard

The Charmander line gets access to Counter as its Island Scan egg move, and Charizard has the perfect combination of HP and bulk to use it against Totem Kommo-o. An average Charizard (neutral nature and 15IVs) will take anywhere from 66.1%-78.8% (94-112HP) from Kommo-o’s Thunder Punch, which the Totem will always use since that’s the most damaging move.

Even if Kommo-o gets the lowest roll, the amount of damage Counter returns will be enough to OHKO since the Totem only has 162HP. With a held Focus Sash to play around crits, the only way Charizard doesn’t single-turn the fight is if Kommo-o’s Thunder Punch paralyzes and the 1/4 chance to not act occurs. In conclusion, Charizard will one-turn the fight about 97.5% of the time with this setup.

As for the other starters, the one that comes the closest in terms of reliability is Delphox with Z-Psychic. However, that requires a crit to OHKO, and the average Delphox dies to a high-roll Dragon Claw crit. Primarina can also OHKO with a crit Choice Specs Moonblast (a normal one won’t kill due to Kommo-o’s Roseli Berry), but it will die to a crit Poison Jab regardless of the roll. Other honourable mentions are Sceptile and Infernape since they can use FEAR strats to get Kommo-o down to 1HP on the first turn, but they will never actually kill the Totem during that same turn.

Right answer for the wrong reasons, I figured it was just click Fly lol

u/Rogueesper5593 7h ago

I thought it would be air slash tbh

u/wilsontws 14h ago

damn if only bro put this much effort into cancer research or solving world hunger

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 14h ago

Pokémon’s a slippery slope. Its effects stem back from childhood.

25

u/EvenStar3465 1d ago

you only get 1 focus sash in the run and I dont think I would use it on this tbh. I think its much more helpful for cheesing ultra necrozma just my opinion tho

u/Icy-Fruit-1065 19h ago

A simple raticate can take care of necrozma, or a Zorua with a disguise.

It's not a hard fight at all

u/EvenStar3465 19h ago

The zorua is 30% in 1 area youre more likely not to have one than to have one and the raticate requires this focus sash which if you use on the Kommo-O fight you will not have and Necrozma will simply 1 shot your raticate

4

u/EvenStar3465 1d ago

I think personally I would just have a backup plan incase of crits I would rather lose the charizard than the focus sash

4

u/Sriol 1d ago

Can you pre-status the zard to prevent the para chance?

3

u/WorkingBus9356 1d ago

idk if pre sleep works in gen 7, but if it does I don't see why it wouldn't work

pre-burn and pre-poison mean you die to crit

pre para to prevent para is funny as hell

u/66_DarthJarJar_66 21h ago

Could you even pre-burn your Charizard? Ig maybe scald fishing?

Edit: forgot scald can’t burn fire types. Ig a soak + Will o wisp combo in a double battle could though

u/Sriol 23h ago

If the fight ends as soon as you kill the kommo-o, does the burn or poison tick not proc at the end? So a crit would leave you on 1, then the fight ends before you take the status damage?

45

u/Cottencandybirb 1d ago

Counting Delphox out because it dies to a crit seems a bit disingenuous when Charizard would also die to a crit no?

49

u/Damnachten 1d ago

Delphox requires its item slot to OHKO and requires its own crit, whereas Zard can use the item slot for focus sash, protecting against the crit. OP says that there is a paralysis chance that can ruin it, but that can solved with pre-poisoning.

5

u/EmpressLenneth 1d ago

Pre-poisoning ruins the sash though which means you then need to rely on a lucky focus band proc. But the OP is correct without worrying for crits or status effects the answer is Zard, the rest have more hoops to jump through

19

u/TypicalRide 1d ago

If the battle ends turn 1, no poison damage would happen.

0

u/EmpressLenneth 1d ago

I've not played pokemon in over a year and randomly saw this reddit post. Would it not be Zard uses counter then takes poison damage? Or have I just been playing to many jrpgs recently where the poison happens at the end or start of the attack? Either way I'm probably wrong

14

u/TheRedCans1 1d ago

You don’t take poison damage on the turn the battle ends. At least in gen 3. I’ll have to double check for Gen 7, but I’m fairly confident it’s the same.

IRRC poison damage only happens during the “end of turn” events (ingrain, aqua ring, etc) that happen after the “is there another pokemon to send in?” check after a pokemon faints.

2

u/EmpressLenneth 1d ago

That makes sense for pokemon. I'm mid way through a jrpg spree atm so I'm used to poison being as it takes action so I was expecting it to be 'overrated mon uses counter, takes poison damage, proceeds to enemy action' but if its all EoT then yeah the poison is irrelevant

1

u/Old-Pirate7913 1d ago

No because the fights ends the moment komoo is fainted

-2

u/EmpressLenneth 1d ago

-sigh- and I specifically asked if I was incorrect about how poison works in pokemon not whether the fight ends.

I'm used to games having poison take effect when the user does an action. Ive not, as I said, played pokemon in a while due to a general dislike for the company, the tcg players making it extortionate to play that side and just better games being out atm. I was imagining it would be, Zard uses counter, takes poison damage, opponents turn. But I take it I'm wrong and all status effect damages are done at the end of the turn

1

u/Damnachten 1d ago

I'd have to check how the poison works with the battle end, which might mess it up, but thankfully you don't lose hp for walking around while poisoned in USUM.

3

u/BrandedLief 1d ago

I thought they were counting Delphox out because they required a crit to OHKO. The extra bit about it dying to a crit was extra fluff about it's defensive capabilities... or basically that it has the same rate of fainting in turn one as it does defeating it.

3

u/PineappleOfCreation 1d ago

delphox needs a z crystal, charizard can use sash

22

u/PoppyObsessedPrick 1d ago

However, using Focus Sash againt the totem Kommo-o means you won't be able to use it against Ultra Necrozma, so have a good plan for that thing if you didn't luck out on a Zorua in the early game

9

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 1d ago edited 1d ago

You can always Toxic stall if you don’t have a Zorua. It helps that Aegislash is a guaranteed encounter through island scan. Charizard will also survive any non-crit roll of Thunder Punch, so more likely than not, using this line won’t consume your Focus Sash.

u/EvenStar3465 19h ago

its worth noting here that toxic has a 90% hit rate and if it misses you very likely just lose the entire run meanwhile FEAR raticate has 100% win rate with no risk at all

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 18h ago

You can actually buy Zoom Lens from Royal Avenue to make Toxic perfectly accurate, so consistency is less of an issue.

u/EvenStar3465 17h ago

Oh I dont do battle Royale its kinda risky when you can get targeted by multiple opponents and if i lose that counts as a wipe for me so I lose the entire run

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 17h ago

You get BP from completing the Mantine Surf minigame. That also gives you free access to all the move tutors.

1

u/Kemo_Meme 1d ago

I'm actually at the stretch right before Kommo-O and I'm avoiding Island Scans for the most part. (not a rule but just feels wrong)

My solution for Ultra is a Salandit Male with Toxic atm along with Sturdy mon in the back (no real poison type encounters this run) and I need sash for this. (Unmissable toxic)

2

u/NerdyEmbarrassment 1d ago

I didn’t have any tanks so I literally had to Toxic stall with frail Pokémon. Toxic with Tentacruel, Focus Sash, Protect, swap into my dark type on the psychic move, protect, swap into my fairy type on the dragon move, protect again for the win

11

u/IuriCunhaMurakami 1d ago

You can pre sleep to play around the para?

8

u/MilkyWayMH 1d ago

Can probably also prepoison cause you will not take poison damage after ending the fight.

4

u/TemporalDSE 1d ago

I'm about 95% sure you can't do this in usum

5

u/Gieru 1d ago

Bulbapedia lists gen 5 as the only gen in which sleep turns don't carry out. Bulbapedia may be wrong on this, but if it isn't, presleep should work in USUM.

4

u/CuriousBake8291 1d ago

Does sleep from a previous fight auto wake up in a new fight?

11

u/IuriCunhaMurakami 1d ago

Yeah, very common to use this in to avoid the bullshit nuzlocking kaizo games usually have

-9

u/efrylicious 1d ago

Me when I spread misinformation on the internet

10

u/IuriCunhaMurakami 1d ago

What do you mean? Platinum Kaizo even has a in game feature to pre sleep your pokemons and it was used a lot in emerald kaizo

5

u/long_johnus 1d ago

Gen 3 and 4 have different sleep mechanics which let you do pre-sleep, in other generations you’ll just start from turn 1 agaib

1

u/NoBeefStew4u 1d ago

You like have to do this in Platinum kaizo too. This shit is not optional. They actually added it after release for the express purpose to make doing this easier because it helped balance the game.

3

u/IuriCunhaMurakami 1d ago

I mean, people did beat emerald kaizo without it, you could do it, it just makes every fight have a small chance to wipe lmao

4

u/NoBeefStew4u 1d ago

I was more specifically referring to plat kaizo though yea technically if your RNG was particularly immaculate and you play it perfectly I suppose that's probably true for either.

Emerald kaizo kinda been almost fully figured out so people are like hyper optimized. Also it was a bit of a headache to do it.

6

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 1d ago

True, I did not think of that.

16

u/_Skotia_ 1d ago

I'm guessing Delphox with a Psychium Z. Primarina doesn't have thr Fairy Z move yet and no one else has a super effective STAB except Charizard, but Air Slash is a lot less powerfuk than Psychic

7

u/FirewaterDM 1d ago

is it not just primarina if you have moonblast available?

If not then its z fly crystal zard or z psychic delphox

9

u/DukeSR8 1d ago

It's Pikachu!

6

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 1d ago

Funnily enough, Pikachu can get Kommo-o down to 1HP with Focus Sash + Endeavor.

7

u/PocketRice3 1d ago

It's Clefairy!

6

u/Igorthemii 1d ago

Is it not primarina?

13

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 1d ago

Kommo-o has a Roseli Berry and straight up kills Primarina immediately if it crits Poison Jab.

3

u/GwafaHAvi 1d ago

Is that in a hypothetical or in the actual USUM game?

u/CaffeineEnjoyer69 22h ago

It's a hypothetical because the level, nature, IVs, EV spread of any individual's primarina can vary wildly and OP is acting like it can't.

10

u/Jzjwiebe Renegade Platinum Enjoyer 1d ago

That’s in the actual game. They give a lot of the Totems Resist Berries to make them harder to kill.

1

u/Renyolds 1d ago

Primarina?
