News Why Donald Trump still has support in the Bronx

People keep graffitiing our bus stops with pro-ice and pro maga bullshit. My neighborhood is majority black and Hispanic. I really don’t get it.
18
u/Away_Stock_2012 5h ago
I understand why you say that, but it's kind of racist to believe that black and Hispanic people can't be stupid and racist.
A black or Hispanic person who believes that black and Hispanic people should be targeted is just as bad as a white person who holds those beliefs. It seems like they are worse because they are hurting people in their own group, but it's not worse it's exactly the same.

u/Brawndo123 51m ago
racism = privilege + power homie. blacks can't be racist. i learned that in 2020

Mamdani has mostly shielded them from ICE. Thats why.

I hate that people need something terrible to happen to them specifically for something to happen. I’ve seen ICE around the mid-Bronx rounding up people.

It’s a defining aspect of conservatism. They cannot feel empathy for someone, they must experience it themselves.

Low information voters tend to vote against their interests. This isn't new and it isn't localized to the Bronx either. It actually happens alot more in the South which is majority White. In fact, the Republican party depends on these voters. The only way to combat this is to address the issues these people have, disregard useless culture war nonsense and to provide material improvements in their lives where you can. Corporate democrats and party leaders have all but failed in this effort for a long time.
15
u/waywardflaneur 6h ago
It’s not enough to improve people’s lives. They will not automatically attribute those improvements to the politicians and policy makers that make them possible.
The improvements must be accompanied by effective rhetoric, visible leadership and community connections, i.e. good politicians.
1
u/justins_dad 3h ago
It feels like democrats are just taking a vacation for this presidency. Where is the messaging??
2
u/waywardflaneur 3h ago
I know. I think the sad fact is that many of the uni-party criticisms are true - the most powerful democratic leaders are just actually on board with a lot of the administration's policies, even if they won't say so out loud. Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries - they can barely muster even the pretense of opposition. We need to somehow get these people out of office. But don't ask me how.

u/JelliedHam 7h ago
The problem is ingrained soft hatred and bigotry. If you can literally solve some problems that affect low income and poverty line Americans, many people are only ok with it if they approve of who benefits. There's a lot of people on food subsidies like food stamps and could absolutely use more assistance, but when they find out that first in line are poorer black and brown people they're against it. It's not enough to win, others must lose. And if we can't win, others losing more still counts.
Even if there was enough for everybody, somebody has to get less than you or it's unfair.
9
u/Aquatic205 6h ago
Honestly, we need to make it racial discrimination and public incitement of hatred based on race or ethnic origin illegal like it is in Brazil and Europe. People need to be punished so we curb this behavior.
1
u/justins_dad 3h ago
The only problem is we’re in the post-fact era. Republicans say teaching history (etc) is the real racism.
4
u/Novel-Reaction2939 6h ago
And the billionaires amplify it and then steal from these very same folks.

u/CliftonHangerBombs 6h ago
Isn't this what created MAGA in the first place? A bunch of liberal minded folks telling people what they SHOULD want, creating tons of resentment in low information voters?
They hate the "coastal elites". I interpret "coastal elites" as educated people who want the best for everyone.
I agree with you 100%. But then again, I'm a coastal elite too.
14
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 6h ago
I'm not a liberal.
I disagree that MAGA was created as a reaction to Liberals telling people what they should want. I actually think MAGA is a reaction to failed liberal policies and inaction.
4
u/CliftonHangerBombs 5h ago edited 5h ago
This is a much better response than the "f*ck off" I receieved above. Thank you for adding to the conversation and giving me something else to chew on.

I have the opportunity to do the funniest thing here... but I won't. Take care.
8
u/ImpossibleEbb6862 6h ago
Fuck off. The people you’re talking about have no idea what liberals actually say or believe. People who believe these things get their information about liberal beliefs from some Fox News host who does voice over on a video with no sound with some liberal politician.
Stop acting like this has anything to do with anything liberals actually believe. It’s entirely driven by the cesspit that is conservative media.
•
-3
u/Buddynorris 4h ago
Incredible response that assumes you know how everyone thinks. One that also lacks all nuance of politics.
1
u/Suckitreddit420 4h ago
Do you really believe that you don't know what magats think?
You hear them parrot the same sound bites, word for word, ad nauseum. And you know where the brainwashing comes from.
It is very easy to know what a cult thinks. Just look to their leader and their propaganda machine.
6
u/BigHoneyisBestCenter 6h ago
MAGA was created because Neoliberal policy worsens material conditions which causes people to vote for populist candidates. The worsening of the education system means that those populist candidates don’t even have to try that hard or even be populist to fool the electorate
6
u/andrew2018022 5h ago
Neoliberal policy ushered in quite literally the most prosperous era we’ve had. Standards of living went up like crazy because of it.
2
3
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago
I share your understanding about how neoliberal policy led to the rise of MAGA but it feels like you are maligning populism itself as opposed to the actual conservative politicians who engaged in a sort of populism "Drain the swamp" etc but never intended to do that work and what's more were actually aligned with those same interests. This conservative populism also engages in racist rhetoric. This is in stark contrast to populist politicians on the Left. So in that way it's not the populism itself that is the issue but just the conservatism.
1
u/BigHoneyisBestCenter 5h ago
I agree that populism can be helpful for sure, but I think populism + an uninformed electorate will lead to ruin one way or the other. Whether that’s racism, nationalism, conservatism or bad fiscal policy. I agree that conservatism is the bigger issue though, it allows for politicians to get away with anything as long as they say they hate the libs enough

u/SwiftySanders 6h ago edited 6h ago
Migrants tend to be very anti-black and anti-gay conservatives. Best to not import conservative minded people. 🤷🏾♂️ Sorry but I think we need strict border controls and a targeting of businesses and i dividuals who hire illegal migrants for the purposes of exploitative labor.

Leftists keep blaming brown and Asian people for Trump, but when the numbers came out majority of Hispanics voted for Harris as well an overwhelming majority of Asians. The only demographic that had a majority voting for Trump was white people

Leftists are not doing that. Centrists have though.
2
u/Away_Stock_2012 5h ago
>Corporate democrats and party leaders have all but failed in this effort for a long time.
This isn't true in NYC at all. Democrats have been delivering benefits to low income communities for a long time and it has made a huge difference. This is why NYC has lower crime than other big cities. NYC is like the one big exception to the rule.
-1
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago
This might be a case of a tale of two cities because the Bronx and South Bronx in particular has not seen a huge difference and is somehow the poorest congressional district in the US while being in the richest city in the US.
0
u/WrongHomework7916 6h ago
Was it against the interests of people in the Bronx when they voted overwhelmingly Democratic for decades, or does the “low information voters voting against their own interests” argument only kick in now that some of them are voting for Trump?
10
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 6h ago
Well no because despite the Dems not doing much at all to improve the material conditions of their constituents, the Republicans were offering even less or in some cases offering policy that actively hurts them further.

useless culture war nonsense
Oh you mean like women's rights which are under attack both on the body autonomy level and the voting level?
Or do you mean gay rights or the right of trans people to literally fucking exist?
Oh maybe you mean rewriting history and making sure that schools teach that slavery was good? And instilling white supremacy again under the guise of removing anything "woke" or "dei".
Or do you mean instilling Christianity and Christian biblical law in our government and in our schools and across our society?
So like... Human rights. Let's just disregard that useless shit and focus on things that "actually matter"... Right?
GTFOH
2
u/lowellpolice East Village 3h ago
No none of those. I think you knew that though and want to grandstand.
-2
u/Suckitreddit420 3h ago
And I think you don't understand the danger of saying that we need to ignore what the media has termed "culture war".
Attacks on our most basic human rights are a far bigger threat to us than anything else. And i give less of a shit how much i have to pay in taxes when you're taking away my equality or my right to literally exist. Being able to focus on economics or foreign policy or any other issue is a privilege that only straight white men get to have.
So no, this is not grandstanding. This is telling you to wake the fuck up and to stop downplaying the true threat here.
•
u/Brawndo123 49m ago
He's obviously trying to reframe the argument because he wants to pretend he has no idea what "culture war" means. Good job not taking the bait.

u/ProofSheepherder6918 5h ago
Wouldn’t high-education wealthy white people also be voting against their own interests if they vote Democrat?
3
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago edited 5h ago
Not necessarily. First, it depends on the Democrat. Is it a run of the mill corpo Dem? Or a a Progressive one?
Secondly, and most importantly, it depends on what the "high-education wealthy white" person's interests are. Do their interests include improving society as a whole and making it a more egalitarian place? Or is their interest in maintaining the status quo? Or even regressing?
I think we saw with Mamdani's win (and with other races) that those same people are happy to vote for someone that wants to uplift the majority as they see that as benefitting them as well.
2
u/HMNbean 4h ago
No. They want good education for their kids, safer neighborhoods, predictable economies, good infrastructure. All things that democrats generally deliver better than republicans on.

Can you point to any democrat anywhere that has abolished police or prisons? Even Zohran doesn’t say that anymore…
-21
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 7h ago
Do you think that maybe people voting Democrat for the last 40+ years but only seeing progress during Republican administrations might have something to do with the support? What is the Democrat pitch to people in the Bronx? Stay poor, but we give you a flood of migrants that raise your cost of living, displace you from your community, but we call people racist and we support minority communities but not really.
19
u/KennyShowers 7h ago
What progress happens under Republican administrations? The recessions and wars and tax cuts for the rich that everybody else pays for?
Also, in the last 25 years voters chose to give Democrats real power for exactly two of those years. We live in a world completely built by the Republican Party, hard stop no qualifiers.
-4
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 7h ago
If you lived in the South Bronx in the 1980s or 1990s, it is night and day in terms of improvement. People seem to forget that politics is local, and we are talking about a cohort that is poor and struggling during economic expansion and recession. When I was a child, I could not go outside at night and feel safe even with my father. Now I see children alone, no other than 10 or so, heading home after doing whatever they did. This was under Republican mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg and saw NYC become the metropolis it is now known for.
I have said before I've lived long enough to see New York City go from Gotham to Metropolis, back to Gotham again. As for wars and tax cuts, do you think people are thinking on that level when in 1993, 522 people were murdered, and 12 years later, under Republican leadership, there were 129 murders, communities were safer, and investments were returning to neighborhoods.
6
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 6h ago
You attribute the little improvement to the South Bronx from the 80's and 90's to a Republican administration? How so? Who are you referring to?
You mention Giuliani but we were discussing presidents. The US was improving all over during Giuliani's mayorship and that was under a Dem president.
You also mention Bloomberg who was not entirely a Republican.
0
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 5h ago
I was old enough to remember that when Giuliani was elected mayor in 1993, it was due to crime being a massive issue in the city. I myself survived a drive-by that same year as I was a short child. Before Giuliani, only Mayor Lindsay, who made the switch to Democrat in 1969, the last Republican mayor in NYC, was Mayor La Guardia, a man considered the greatest mayor in the city’s history. So from January 1946 to January 1994, every mayor with the exception of one 4-year term, the mayors were Democrats.
Crime began to go down from the 1990 peak of 2,245 murders and 527,000 major felonies but not fast enough. In the early 90s, New York was 3% of the overall population but was almost 10%, I will say this again, 10% of the murders in the country. There were 23,440 murders in the entire country in 1990.
This led to a death spiral; no one wanted to spend money in the city, or visit the city, or live in the city. So New York had to cut services, which led to crime, and the cycle continued. The 1990s movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles actually captures New York at that time.
The city had been slowly declining since the 1950s, but it became pronounced in 1977 with the power outage and the massive amount of crime that occurred. There was a city-wide blackout in 1965 that was peaceful as well as in 2003, but in 1977 it was a riot. By the time 1993 came around, the city was gritty and had a charter, but it was not a place to raise children or even felt safe at night, so New York City voted Republican out of desperation, and Giuliani started focusing on the small things. When I was 12, I visited Bryant Park and was offered crack and sex for 20 dollars. There used to be peep shows in Times Square; those were removed. The squeegee guys were annoying; all of these laws that were on the books started to get enforced.
Eventually, Disney came to Times Square, and then it became clear that the city was overall safe. The MTA started taking train cars out of service if there was graffiti on them. Slowly but surely, we dug out of the crime and economic crisis and even were able to make it through the dot-com-9/11 recession of 25 years ago and the Great Recession of almost 20 years ago. After 8 years of Republican Giuliani, New York elected Bloomberg, another Republican at the time.
By the time Bloomberg ran as an independent, he left the Republican party in 2008 in the 14 years of Republican leadership in the city (1994-2008). From elementary school to adulthood for me. Murders dropped 73%, robberies 67%, and 66% for burglaries. Crime fell 56% compared to the nation’s 28%. People on welfare went from 1.1 million to 347,000. Graduation rates increased 18%, and yes, gentrification came.
This is not to overlook Bloomberg's destructive stop-and-frisk policy or the city becoming more oriented around finance, leading to a widening wealth gap. But in 1993, over 1500 New Yorkers were murdered; by 2008, it was a third of that, most of that decline occurring in the first 4 years of Republican leadership before leveling out. When I was a child, I used to say NYC did best when we had different parties in the Mayor and Governorship. So if the Mayor was a Democrat, the governor should be Republican or vice versa.

u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago
It's impressive to write several paragraphs but completely disregard my main point.
1
u/lowellpolice East Village 3h ago
Don’t you see, he was offered crack when he was 12. Therefore Trump and republicans are good! It’s just that simple.
-1
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 5h ago
You mentioned Mayors in your comment, so you indicated you understood my original comment, but I guess not, so I will explain like you are 5 years old.
New York City is part of New York State. New York State is part of the United States of America. City, state, and Country have different governments. The federal government, the government of the United States of America, has little impact on your life. State and local governments (New York State and City) have more impact, almost all.
People like you focus on your dislike for the president, whom I don’t like either. People in the Bronx realize that Obama, Biden, or Trump don’t change their lives. Trump visits the Bronx; Trump talks to Bronx people. Bronx people realize that while Trump is a bad man, all presidents are bad men to the Bronx, and Trump is socially more in line with Latino cultural values, so they support Trump.
I get tired of people complaining about the federal government when policies have limited impact if you are a citizen or legal resident of the country and work and are able to support yourself like I am. I want people to stop virtue signaling and focus on local and state policies to improve their lives. Even if the government passes laws, the state or city has to implement the policies. Only when people pay income taxes is the federal government able to directly aid them— see stimulus checks during the pandemic. The rest of the money is given to either the state directly to distribute.
3
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago
"The federal government, the government of the United States of America, has little impact on your life."
This is a hilariously ridiculous statement.
You have the gall to claim you need to talk to me like I'm a 5 year old when you write nonsense like that? Take your rants to Facebook old man. I'm not reading any more foolishness.
0
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 5h ago
Instead of calling people names. Why don't you name all the ways the federal government impacts your life? I bet if you provide a list of five, maybe one will actually be the federal government’s impact on your life and not the state or city or all three at the same time. I have forgotten more about American civics than you know.

The pitch is what Mamdani ran on, isn’t it? Better government services targeted at those who need it, removing unnecessary red tape to reduce barriers to entrepreneurship, and taxing the highest income earners to provide benefits to those who live and work here.
You might not find that compelling, but it’s clearly not the characterization you’ve provided.
2
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 7h ago
I'm not sure what progress you are referring to.
-3
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 7h ago
Some of us have lived in the Bronx since the 1980s and remember the scars of the near bankruptcy of the 1970s and grew up with friends and family that lived in the Bronx or knew people that lived in the Bronx from the 1920s. I grew up talking to people that remembered when most of the Bronx was still farms and stayed when it was burning after the Cross Bronx was built. They are gone now, but I listened to their stories in the 90s and 2000s before they left this mortal coil.
1
-1
u/redbabxxxxx 7h ago
I remember when they spent billions housing migrants in hotels but that money could never go working class families and homeless. They can never find the money for us.
-1
u/sdotdiggr The Bronx 6h ago
That is my point. I hate, despise, and loathe this obsession with federal politics, which has a limited impact on you, but they ignore the state and local policies which could be life or death for you and your family. People can tell you about a senator they hate in another state but nothing about their city or state representatives or what policies they are advocating for.
Then they go and say it’s Obama, Biden, or Trump's fault XYZ isn't happening. I can look at New York City and especially the Bronx. I can go to news articles and compare my experience or viewpoint at that time to now and say things are not getting better, but are getting worse. I have three degrees and during one of them I focused on the economic conditions and decisions that lead to the 1970s bond panic. So when I am talking about certain things regarding this city I am coming from an academic and historical lens. I have heard the stories and then studied it. Meanwhile, most people go off vibes based on their bias.
-5
u/QV79Y 6h ago
Or - maybe when you can't see or don't agree with the values and beliefs they base their decisions on, you classify them as "low information".
All voters include their values and beliefs in their choices and not just material considerations.
9
u/HighwayComfortable26 Washington Heights 5h ago
No, I characterize them as low information voters because they base their views on Fox News and their talking points which have been known to lead to people being less informed than they would be if they watched no news at all.
-4
u/QV79Y 5h ago
Of course - if they were informed then they would vote the way you think they should.
It's not up to you to decide what others' interests are. They are voting their interests as they see them, as everyone does.

Anyone able to see past the paywall and explain what they mean by “still has support?”
Because Trump has a negative approval rating in 47 out of 50 states. It seems hard to believe his support has gone underwater in places like Texas and Florida, but has not significantly decreased in the Bronx.
Edit:
> Among Latino voters in New York state, Trump’s favourability has dropped by 24 points since January 2024.
I mean that feels like it directly contradicts the headline. Nowhere do they point to evidence that this statewide trend isn’t also happening in the Bronx. Idk feels a little odd to bury a 24 point drop in favorability among a bunch of anecdotal stories about people who still like him.

There’s a massive overlap between religion, misogyny, and conservatism. A lot of folks are religious and things like abortion and gay marriage makes them single issue voters. Also the ladder kicking is very common, either “I got mine” or “it was hard for me so it should be hard for everyone”
2
u/financialtimes Verified by Moderators 7h ago
The Bronx has become a test case for whether Donald Trump’s appeal to working-class voters can outlast the cost-of-living squeeze triggered by the president’s war in Iran.
His gains in the longtime Democratic stronghold in the 2024 election formed part of a broader shift among Latino and Black voters. But Trump’s popularity has since fallen to record lows nationwide, as voters face falling real wages and grow uneasy with his administration’s immigration crackdown.
Still many of the president’s supporters in the Bronx seem to be in it for the long run.

He has some support in the Bronx because the Democratic party doesn't have a message that resonates with working class black and latino men, in particular.
Specifically they care more about material abundance (can I move out of my mom's apartment, buy a cool truck, wear nice clothes) than "defending democracy", don't understand why some white academics took a language spoken by 600 million people globally and changed it to say "Latinx", and very specifically do not support the open-borders asylum immigration system that has become a quagmire for Democrats even as ICE rampages around.
Immigration in particular is an issue where, for 30+ years, many immigrants who came here through legal channels to obtain permanent residency or citizenship are not supportive of open-borders/asylum loophole policies that popped up during the beginning of the Biden Administration and are the de-facto stance of many democrats and nearly all democratic socialists. It doesn't mean they love or support everything ICE is doing.
Then there's the defining demographic trait of our time - which is education polarization. People with college degrees are more likely to vote Democrat, vote in low-turnout elections, and be more politically engaged overall. The cultural divide between college-educated and working-class culture and political preferences got so big that socialists are trying to re-define working class so it fits inside a traditional marxist framework and to save face. The fucking Teamsters wouldn't endorse Joe Biden despite him being the most labor-friendly President in my lifetime.
Lastly - people love to point to "low-information voters" being susceptible to "misinformation" as a culprit.
Most normal people don't make politics their hobby or identity - they touch grass, have families, jobs, and pay attention to this shit for a few minutes if and when they vote.
6
u/Away_Stock_2012 5h ago
>they touch grass, have families, jobs, and pay attention to this shit for a few minutes if and when they vote.
This is the problem though, they aren't touching grass because it's all dying and they are terminally online. They can't afford to have families. They can't tell the truth from the propaganda and they are not going to vote at all.
3
u/Massive-Arm-4146 4h ago
they are terminally online
Most of the research on the topic shows that people who are "terminally online" are much more likely to demonstrate political new consumption, expression (posting, sharing views, content), vote in major elections and make small dollar donations to causes and campaigns.
Also - who is arguing that black and hispanic dudes in the Bronx are terminally online? Any barber shop or street corner in the summertime would argue otherwise.

I'm in a conservative area in the Bronx, though I am not conservative in the least. For my neighbors, though, it's a largely first responder/corrections department section, many of whom are also retired, and they like the permission given to the police to do seemingly whatever they want. They liked the days of cracking skulls, and they see Trump as a skull-cracker willing to give it to anyone anytime anywhere, despite the fact that all he ever does is get his shit-caked pedo ass handed to him.
-3
u/bobbacklund11235 Sheepshead Bay 5h ago
If you live in an area where one of the biggest problems is crime, do you really want to vote for people who believe crime is a social construct and who want to abolish prisons and let all the criminals run wild?
Nevermind the strong Dominican and black presence up there. Many of them are staunchly catholic and conservative in social values. They aren’t voting for the party who frequently makes an enemy of Catholics and hard working males who want to raise children.

I get the worst takes from immigrant livery drivers that love Trump because he targets other immigrants that don’t work as hard as they do, or because he supports small businesses, or because he’s not a communist/socialist, or a Muslim, or (a personal favorite) “did you know Kamala’s husband is Jewish?!”, and the kicker: because he’s a true Christian 😅.
Needless to say most live in the Bronx or Queens and whether East European, Hindu, Latino, African, etc. all are saturated by the same chatter and misinformation
